Haaa.....I landed there 5 or 6 days ago on my last rotation.

Took some pics while out, all cell phone pics and not of quality like what's on here. I need to get a decent camera one of these days...

Thanks man. This was while I was really playing around with HDR capabilities. Doesn't hurt that Utah has some scenic views~

Thanks for that wealth of information. I've done a little more research on the full frame and crop. If I'm going to spend the money I would just rather go ahead and get what I'll need the first time. Haha I didn't realize the lenses made that much of a difference.

Thanks for the info. And that's an awesome picture. That's exactly what I'm looking to take pictures of. The Carolina skies around here are gorgeous sometimes.

@Zharris truthfully a cheap but GOOD point and shoot in my opinion would be the sony a6000. I'm sure this will start some mirrorless war. But I still love my little a6000 and I shoot with a D5 and a 810 as my backup. And I take my sony with me everywhere. Cost per end result I don't think there's anything out there that'll beat the a6000 in that regard personally. Lens choice is just as on par with any other manufacturer, they make adapter rings to run full frame lenses. It's a FAST little camera that can do action shots with the best of them. Sure a Pro photographer camera would be nice, but it's just like a race truck at that point. Every other day I have to take my camera bodies in to have them cleaned. A small high end camera with a decent lens and a cheat sheet of sorts to get you a beautiful image at the end of the day would be my recommendation.

I see the price difference is a lot. I mean honestly, I'm just a beginner truly at photography. So I might take this camera to get started and once I get the hang of it, upgrade to something I can do more stuff with. I think that would probably be my best option.

I dont think you can go wrong with any camera that is a dSLR. Each has their own pros and cons. Like said before, I'd just make sure you got one that will let you shoot in "MANUAL" mode so you can begin to understand truly how a camera works. That way you can change the "f:/, ISO, Shutter speed" independent of each other. You can't get most of the shots above with a standard point and shoot on auto mode.

I can't really tell, does the Sony A6000 have a manual mode? I see where it's a DSLR.

Yes the Sony a6000 has a manual mode. I don't know how well this image will turn out since I'm uploading it via my phone but this was shot on the a6000 in manual mode. It's a bitchin little camera.

On rare occasions do I shoot in aperture priority. Never shoot in auto except with my phone. Lol. I shoot 99.9% of my shots in manual mode. And everyone has their own preferences of how they shoot.

Agreed. I have a good cheat sheet for people to use to just get them a simplified grasp of what the main settings do. Let me see if I can find it. For anyone new to photography and shooting in any mode other than auto this is a big help to jumpstart their learning curve.

IMG_5527.jpg Here's a good cheat sheet for the beginners here to just get an overall understanding of the main settings in manual mode. How they affect your images and to help you determine the ball park correct setting to get the shot you're looking to get.

Another suggestion for beginners - Set yourself up with a Flickr account. You get a terabyte (1,000 gigs!) of free memory. (Free always gets my attention.) If you use your phone to take pictures, install the Flickr app on your phone and computer. Then set up your phone to automatically upload to Flickr. What goes into your phone Flickr automatically goes into your computer Flickr. Then you can delete it off your phone so you don't have to use up your memory. It stays in Flickr until you delete it. Excellent editing tools in Flickr (not Photoshop, but still good and still free). And, easy to share with friends and post to social media like Facebook, or order prints. Quality of Flickr pictures is excellent. Check out Flickr. You won't be disappointed. Good luck! (No. I don't work for Flickr.) :)

With an app. Actually there are two apps that I use for long exposure. One for daytime shots and one for night shots or dimly lit shots. They are "Slow Shutter Cam" and the night one is "NightCap Pro". I almost always use Slow Shutter.

There's also a great little app called "Expositor" that's a nice way to figure out ISO, F-Stop, and Speed. I think it's free too.
