Yeah, I definitely pay for it. The Tundra seems to like it though, so I keep it flowing.

The station by my place actually ran out of 87 the last couple weeks so I filled up with 91 at the price of 87. Haven't hand calculated yet but the dash doesn't seem to think the fuel economy is much better, if at all, so I doubt it would be worth the extra cost for me.

I've only noticed a difference in economy between E10 and E0, not between octanes.

My experience is that Techron actually does work for cleaning fuel injectors.

When I've had a stumble or rough idle, I have bought Techron either in bottles for adding, and in their gasoline (all grades). Chevron is too pricey for me to run all the time, and I haven't really found it necessary. Techron does cause the injector performance to improve, and I don't really expect anything else from it. I'm too tight to pay a dealer to clean my injectors. :D

I'm skeptical of any other retail snake-oil.

Techron is often cited by our marketing folks as an example of what they want to get our branding to.

Our product people swear that our add pack is superior in lab tests.

:DMy ears are burning! Hello all, longtime no chat. Hope everyone is well. With respect to gasoline, obviously there are different ratios of octane to the rest of the 400+ chemicals in gasoline. Higher octane, literally more octane molecules. With respect to detergents, every company has a different recipe. All gasoline is the same, as in all 87 octane is the same throughout the United States. When a refinery makes gasoline it goes into a pipeline with every other brands gasoline. When it reaches a distribution terminal, Exxon or Shell or whoever send their trucks and as the gasoline is loaded into the tank car, the additives are mixed in. Additives differentiate the brands of gasoline. Exxon has its own formulation vs Shell vs BP, etc. when you buy generic gas from Al’s Pump and Go, they’ve most likely purchased a generic and very basic additive package. Detergents are part of the additive package. What’s in the additives? Well, those are proprietary to the manufacturer. When you go to gas station X, there IS a difference between the additives in regular and premium. It may only be amount of additive or it may be formulation. Additives are where oil companies make a lot of money. Hope that helps. PS. I don’t own my Tundra anymore, I moved to the East coast and It was too big for here. Constantly getting dinged up.

Sorry to hear about your Tundra's mistreatment, @Cubanchem.

Know anything about the coarser cuts, i.e. motor oil? Hang around, you could do a lot of good on these motor oil threads here. :D

Now, they may not be lying when they say that about our other products. The F1 racing team we partnered with started seeing better performance and fuel economy when they switched to our motor oil. CN is very excited to test our new diesel additive because it looks like it could provide a fuel economy boost.

It is a marketing gimmick to get people to pay more for gas at the pump. In many areas as in California there are only two refineries that supply 100% of the gas stations. Regardless of the brand you buy it is a good idea to put a bottle of fuel injector cleaner into the tank every 20,000 miles or so as dirty injectors will reduce the mpg.

Octane only is a measure of resistance to pre-ignition and the higher the compression ratio of a gas engine the more likely pre-combustion or knock is to be a problem. With modern engines (as in those made in the past 30 years) the engine computer will automatically retardt the spark to avoid knock. The lower the octane rating of the gas burned the more the spark will be retarded which results in less power and low fuel economy. But if the engine is designed for 87 octane gas, burning anything with a higher octane rating accomplished nothing and is a complete waste of money.

Ethanol blends are different matter as they provide 15% less btu's per gallon for the engine and you will get significantly poorer fuel economy. These are great way to subsidize the corn industry at the expense of taxpayers and consumers.

At this point, all brands are using ethanol in their premium. Of course you could run Ethanol free.... but then it won’t be top tier, as it won’t be branded product regardless

Also remember that there are only 2 (yes 2) products actually being refined. In the East, and south, that would be 84 and 90 octane. When you blend it with Ethanol, the Ethanol adds 3 points, giving you your 87 and 93 octane, for example. And that is why E-0 will almost always be 90 octane premium!

I wanted to follow up on this. I went to the site. To my surprise Sunoco was NOT on the list. I was discussing it with a friend who sent me this:

"I did a quick search. Sunoco rather recently (Feb 2017) started selling Top Tier, initially on premium brand, and then across the board in April 2017. My guess is they did not want to pay the license fee? The top tier brand lists I found must not have been updated, but the details are on Sunoco's website."

So maybe that link is old?

Overall gas is gas, all comes out of the same tank at the pipeline/refinery. Different suppliers have different additives. Additive is added when product is loaded onto tanker....most of the time, some larger companies/stations add additive when fuel is dropped to save a penny. Not many ounces (8-12) added per 8500-8700 gallon load...nasty stuff. Across the country regionaly and seasonly gas changes. Bout impossible to figure out the best gas. Ethanol blends absorb water. Clear gas is higher priced and not available everywhere or legal for modern vehicles. Reformulated gas sucks for you city people. Buy from high volume modern name brand station whenever possible..top tier and BP seems to have loyal mileage and penny pinching customers from what I have seen......cross drops happen, stations close and tanks get pumped out years later.....and that product can get spread around to dispose of it...

And that pump (probably a Gilbarco) dispenses the fuel through the same hose. So, there is a slight “blend” no matter the grade. Our Tundra’s are designed to run on 87, and I’ve never seen any evidence whatsoever that shows a benefit to higher octane fuel. Buy from a new c-store or truck stop and don’t lose sleep at all about brand/octane. (Low octane fuels work fine at high altitudes FYI).

The only time I EVER paid for octane is when I had a 1.8T VW. Higher octane is generally for higher compression ratios. There is zero sense in paying for octane when you don’t need it.

And yes, gas is gas. Unless it gets a bit of water in it... then it’s liability liquid.
