I was getting quite a bit of wind noise, so I had to improvise...

I didn’t say you were an asshole. Ever backed into someone? Ever rear ended someone? I have, and terrible about it. I’ve also been hit and backed into. Mistakes happen, and we could easily find ourselves on either side of the fence. Anger rarely leads to anything good.

    Glad you’re okay.

And you're a LEO too; I'll bet you've seen all sorts of crazy stuff with regards to car accidents!

That's why I have insurance (which I'm not going to need because they owned it immediately); I was honestly more worried that it could have landed a few feet to the left and bashed in my head instead of the passenger door. In a way, the truck could have very well saved my life!

I paid sixty bucks for a set of blackout badges on Amazon back in 2018; The same set is $48 now. I have no idea what an OEM chrome TACOMA emblem goes for, but I've got a feeling I'll be pocketing some beer money after the truck is fixed!

Agreed that it’s an accident. I’d probably have been calmer. But I don’t see where he was treating anyone poorly. The dashcam audio just sounds like rhetorical “oh shit” not aimed at anyone in particular to me.

Glad everyone’s ok and they’re taking care of you, OP.

    @Cpl_Punishment

Not going to be totaled! Unfortunately, I've been having a hell of a time getting into contact with the scrapyard's insurance company, and I finally decided to involve my insurance company. I have a $1,000 deductible, and the estimate you see below is minus that deductible; I want my truck fixed in this lifetime, so USAA is gonna pay to fix it, then go after the other insurance company and get my deductible refunded.

You should have done this from the start. This is why you pay them, let them deal with it.

You shouldn't be charged your deductible since you were not at fault, and that estimate looks low.

That's because the deductible is, well, deducted...

It's actually close to four grand!

I have since changed my policy so I will not have a deductible for any future comprehensive incidents, and just $100 for any collision claims.

USAA will be getting the full amount from the scrapyard's insurance company and reimbursing me the thousand dollar deductible. I am going to be adding rental car coverage to my policy in the near future too, because I don't have rental coverage right now, but it looks like I might be SOL with regards to getting the scrapyard or it's insurance company to pay for a rental car.

Check your liability coverage too. A lot of folks carry way to little liability. Damage to vehicle and medical bills can add up fast.

Never do the minimum. A little bit more money a month gets you a LOT more coverage.

I certainly do not have the minimum; Liability coverage for myself and passengers is in the hundreds of thousands.

It's more than "an inanimate object". It's time that it took to earn the money to buy it. It's the time and money it takes to maintain it. It's the emotion that grows because we care about our shit when nobody else does. I don't see any problem pointing out when someone is stricken with a case of the dumb ass. When we earn something we also earn the right to give a shit about it. At some point it's okay to point out the idiocy of another person's actions that damages our stuff.

It sucks that you have to chase them around to get them to own up to their screw up. It shouldn't come down to money out of your pocket. I would continue to pursue the scrap yard for damages. It's unimaginable that they damage your truck and then avoid the making you whole.

Believe or not, I think the mandatory minimum in Pennsylvania is $10,000 for property and $30,000 for medical; I'm worried about someone totaling my truck or injuring me and not having adequate coverage, than I am about being involved in an accident that's my fault and needing millions of dollars in coverage.

This isn't the first time something like this has happened, either; First time was in October 2015...

A drunk 70-year old man in 2002 Mercedes E320 decided to floor it through an intersection while I was making a left turn and almost took off my back bumper...

He told his insurance company that I'd run a stop sign and they believed him and refused to pay me, even though this was his second drunk driving offense and he'd KILLED somebody while driving drunk that first time, which was back in 1980s.

Also, my insurance is valid in Canada; Before COVID, I was thinking about a trip to Ontario. I contacted USAA to find out if my insurance is valid and found out that it was! Unfortunately, that was back in like 2018 or 2019 and my passport expired almost a year ago...

That said, I have health insurance through my dad. I have a high-functioning form of autism called Aspergers Syndrome, which is considered a disability; Normally, young adults lose access to their parents' coverage, but my dad's health insurance provider (which is through the US Navy, as he is a retired veteran) opted to keep on their coverage indefinitely. Everything except my eyeglasses is covered!

I am probably going to be getting health insurance through my employer soon, though; I would agree with you that health insurance in the USA sucks.

I went to British Columbia with my parents back in February 2001; My dad was in the Navy from 1982 to 2007, and was stationed in at NAS Whidbey Island in Washington at the time. We were only two hours from the border, and we just drove right into Canada. This was pre-9/11, so we didn't even need passports (At least I didn't; I wasn't even 12)!

I would love to go back and visit Canada once all these COVID restrictions are done!
