Cops can really be a pain in the ass...

Sadly, my Pathfinder ended up getting repossessed from it's second owner 8 months or so after they bought it (who in the hell finances a 13-year old SUV with 113K miles that's worth maybe four grand at most?!??!). Based on the Carfax report, me and some of the guys from Tacoma World believe it ended up in a junkyard because nobody wanted it and ultimately ended up getting crushed, because on Carfax the trail goes completely cold after it was repossessed in June 2010.

    That's sad to hear :(
I don't know the inner workings of these dealers and auctions, but I was told by the sales guy that I bought my '16 Taco from, that the auction cars that aren't worth a damn usually end up going to Mexico. Sounded like a load of BS, but might explain why the Carfax went cold in your case. Repossessed, sent to auction, and ultimately exported south of the border maybe. :notsure:

I'd be happier knowing that someone in Mexico is enjoying it...

However, this guy I know had a 2007 Chevy Suburban. He traded it for a used Dodge Ram in maybe 2014 or so. I ran the license plate through Carfax, and the report said it ended up in Dubai or something! A beaten-to-shit Suburban with about 200K miles ended up in the Middle East!

I’ve only had it a year and a half. Kept searching the web daily until I found it. Flew from Houston Texas to Atlanta Georgia then a car and drove to Athens Georgia bought it and drove 13 hours back home with no problems.

    I love your truck!

Sadly, mine's a slushbox, but my dad got it for me brand new when I got my learner's permit. He officially gave it to me (as in put the title in my name) in 2016. It's got over 105K on it now, and I added one hell of a stereo system.

    How many miles on yours?!?!

I would love to add buckets to mine, but my truck has those pesky side airbags...

You should add a stereo system to yours. In my opinion, the stereo system in the earliest Second Gens was a downgrade from what was offered in the 2001-2004 First Gens. The more expensive 2001-2004 models had a CD/cassette combo. 2005-2008 models had the radio in your truck, with a CD player but no cassette player or AUX input. My truck had an AUX input, but the factory radio still sucked so I totally redid it.

I can dig it, I put a Bluetooth module on it so I can. Connect my phone, I half wonder if the owner before me replaced the speakers, it’s actually not too bad, I’d love to put some serious sound in it but I drive it to work, we have issues with car break ins, so I keep the truck completely empty.

That's what alarm systems and CCW permits are for! Where do you work where they have all these break-ins?

Exactly, we’re in a distribution warehouse next to a small Amazon hub, we got people coming and going all the time.

I can tell you experience that removing an aftermarket stereo from a Tacoma is not easy. If anyone tried to steal my head unit, I'd pin them to the ground and call the cops before they got to the second screw!

Did I tell you that our new puppy, Mandy, died in July?

Specifically, we had to put her to sleep at barely a year old because her kidneys were failing. About a month after we got her, we noticed she was drinking A LOT. We took her to a specialist, and they did an ultrasound. One look at her kidneys, and they determined she had Congenital Renal Dysplasia. There was absolutely nothing we could have done, as she was born with this rare and ultimately fatal disease. Some dogs are lucky enough to have it affect only one kidney and live a normal life. Mandy unfortunately had it in both kidneys. All we could do was pray for the best but expect the worst. She did great for the next six months or so (November 2018-May 2019), and then she started sleeping a lot. At first I loved it when she slept at my feet under my desk, but then I realized it was not normal. She started shedding more than normal, she developed anemia, and by mid-June or so her hind legs had started to atrophy. She looked like a skeleton if you really looked close. At some point in June, she stopped eating her low-protein prescription kidney food, and our vet told us to feed her whatever she would eat. This amounted to wet dog food and certain people food (string cheese, cereal, etc). When I couldn't get her to eat dog food, I just poured her a bowl of cereal minus the milk.

Then, also in June, she started to develop this iron deficiency and resorted to licking sidewalks outside and eating huge chunks of drywall inside because she thought it was supplementing this deficiency. She did some damage to our 3-year old house, but we didn't get mad her. We would just make her stop. She's been gone almost three months, and we still haven't fixed the damage

On July 1st, 2019 we made the difficult decision to put her to sleep because she was steadily going downhill and we did not want her to suffer. If you think it's awful putting an elderly pet to sleep due to failing health, imagine having to put a puppy to sleep. My Black Lab (Molly) was born on December 11th, 1994 and lived until twelve days past her 15th birthday (December 23rd, 2009), when we had to put her to sleep due to failing health. She died cradled in my arms, and I cried uncontrollably. It was always the first time I'd ever seen my dad cry. Molly had arthritis in her back legs, and her kidneys started to shut down. She survived skin cancer and lived well past the average life expectancy for a Labrador. Molly spoiled me, for lack of a better term. It was almost 9 years before we finally got another dog (we lived in a townhouse from 2007 to 2016 and it did not have much of a yard). When we took Mandy home, I was expecting her to live to be at least 12. We had no idea that she'd been given a death sentence while still developing in her mother's womb. Mandy was a mixture of Labrador, Corgi, and Staffordshire Terrier. She really was about the sweetest dog ever, acting a little bit standoffish with energetic young kids, but ultimately getting along with people and animals alike. She even got along with my friend's cats and ferret when I brought her over to her house.

So, Mandy died in my arms, the injection administered by the same vet who'd put Molly to sleep almost 10 years earlier, and I still have not fully gotten over her death...

I’m sorry, Charlie. It’s wonderful what pets bring when they join our families- but excruciating when they leave us. Mandy’s life was too short a story, but a good one you will never forget. Despite the pain— or because of it— these experiences leave us better humans. I am sorry for your loss.

I asked this same question about Tacos on Tacoma World a while back and the not-so-straight answer was yes. For the most part, it would seem that only difference would be that the gauge cluster and odometer are in kilometers, and all of the emissions equipment is the same.

When I detailed cars a dealership, I once detailed a brand new Dodge Charger, and the window sticker explicitly stated that the car was "only intended for use and registration in the United States" or something along those lines. However, it would seem that American-spec vehicles regularly get exported to Canada. I talked to a guy at the Carlisle Truck Nationals a while back who bought a 2004 Chevy Silverado, and brought it into the Canada. The truck was American-spec and spent its whole life in Alabama. The reason for this is that he specifically wanted a loaded regular cab short bed 2WD, which is hard to find anywhere, and almost all older Silverados and Sierras in Canada are rusted to shit. The biggest issue the guy had was getting an Ontario title due to bureaucracy and red tape. According to him, it is apparently easier to bring a Canadian-spec vehicle into the states (or bring an American-spec vehicle back into the US from Canada) than it is to bring any vehicle from America into Canada.

Emissions tests are different in the US depending on location. If you live in a "non-attainment" area (usually a large city), the emissions test is much more rigorous (exhaust pipe gas analysis) and more expensive. If you get the vehicle tested out in a rural area away from cities, emissions tests are easier to pass and cheaper.

Probably not in California. Mine came from Texas and Carmax said they had to do something smog related to it.

Bringing a US-spec vehicle back into the US is pretty simple.

As a US resident, to get a vehicle into the states that is less than 25 yrs old it would need to have an original letter from the manufacturer stating it complies with US DOT safety laws and an EPA letter saying it satisfies US emissions laws. Proof it was originally manufactured in US helps (original title, bill of sale etc).

Door jam stickers are nice, but the letters from manufacturer are better because they are what gets sent to import offices for processing.

Personal importations are easier compared to importing for re-sale. And then there is the duty involved depending on where vehicle was manufactured/originated, original owner's status, if it was ever in the US to begin with etc etc..

Non US-spec vehicles can sometimes have the gauge clusters converted to MPH by a dealership in order to conform but I've seen that's $$$$. If a less than 25 yr old non-US-spec vehicle cant prove that it meets DOT and EPA safety standards, its not going to be imported. That's also why you see a lot of the RHD vehicles attempted to be imported then seized and crushed.. they will never meet DOT safety standards being RHD.

Once a vehicle is over 25 yrs old and none of this matters lol

To sort-of answer your original question, I would imagine the Tundra would pass emissions stateside but don't quote me on that. talk to the EPA.

And as far as vehicles being imported to Canada I cant really speak to that but I do know vehicles being imported to Canada have to wait in the US for 72 hours after PPW is submitted before they get taken into Canada.

My 2010 Tacoma was purchased here in California, and has a label under the hood saying it's CARB certified and that no adjustments are needing. 20+ years ago, California-bound vehicles required special emissions equipment though...

I bought an Audi R8 from Canada and they looked at the sticker on the inside of the engine compartment and said good to go
    This was in 2008 though.

    Select few don't have to

Counties that don't require smog: alpine, amador, calaveras, del norte, humboldt, imperial, inyo, lake, lassen, mariposa, mendocino, modoc, mono, plumas, sierra, siskiyou, trinity, tuolumne. Mod away, but don't sell ;)

parts of el dorado, placer, riverside, san bernardino, san diego, sonoma, depending on your zip code.

So you're saying my uncle could register his '77 VW Westfalia camper in one of those counties?!?! He lives in Monterey and currently has it registered at his brother's house in Texas because it won't pass smog!

Long as you register the VW to an address in one of those counties. My parents moved to Calaveras county 5 years ago and no more smog needed on there 77 Chevy truck (used to be in contra costa county)
