My ride is a 2010 Toyota Tacoma regular cab 2WD, 2.7L 4-banger/slushbox, in Silver Streak Mica. My dad bought it brand new in September 2009 with 20 miles on the clock, not long after I got my learner's permit. He put $2,000 down and financed the rest at 0.9% APR (considering that this was the middle of the recession, this is not a bad interest rate)! He paid it off early in either 2012 or 2013.

I took my driver's test in that truck in May 2011 and became pretty much the sole driver from that point on. My dad signed the truck over to me in December 2016, and the title is now in my name.

My truck has been through it's share of fender-benders, most of which were not my fault, and one of which involved a drunk asshole in a Mercedes. It has it's share of dents and dings, and it now has almost 105K miles, but it has never let me down!

I have driven that truck to numerous car shows, I've hauled all sorts of shit for friends and family, and I've even made out with two different girlfriends in it. To some, it's just a truck, but the memories made in it are priceless...

    This happened in October 2015...

I was okay. It cost $2,200 to fix my truck. The prick who hit my truck was a 70-year old man who blew a .16 BAC. He killed somebody while driving drunk in the 1980s and somehow still had a driver's license. He lied to his insurance company and said I ran a stop sign, and they believed him even though he got a DUI. My insurance company ultimately had to eat the cost of fixing my truck because Sir Drinks-A-Lot's insurance company refused to do so. My rates did not go up, the deductible was waived, and I got court-ordered restitution money whcih I spent on a new stereo system and dashcams.

The guy who hit me hired a lawyer, and unbeknownst to him, that lawyer owned the bar where I was working at the time. The lawyer he'd hired to represent him ended up getting me the restitution money. Karma's a real bitch!

In Pennsylvania, if you're a resident, you can transfer the plate from your trade-in to your new vehicle. If you trade in anything that PennDOT considered a passenger vehicle for anything PennDOT considers a truck or vice versa, and don't have a vanity plate, the dealer will issue the appropriate plate. If it is a new plate, the vehicle buyer gets a temporary paper tag to stick in the rear window, which makes little sense to me since Pennsylvania did away with registration stickers in 2017.

We traded a 1996 Nissan Pathfinder for my 2010 Tacoma. My dad had bought the Pathfinder new, and it was registered in Pennsylvania from 1996 to 1998. My dad bought it in May 1996, and I'm 99% sure he transferred the plate from the 1993 Chevy S-10 Blazer he traded for the Pathfinder. My dad was in the Navy for 25 years, and we moved back to California in 1996. My dad used the completely legal "armed forces" loophole present in pretty much every state to keep his Pathfinder registered in Pennsylvania (and he held a New Jersey driver's license with his parents' address on it from the early 1980s until 2005 too, because it allowed him to avoid state income taxes).

So, the Pathfinder remained registered in Pennsylvania from 1996 to 1998, and then we moved to Virginia Beach in the summer of 1998. My mom and I flew from San Francisco to Norfolk while my remained behind to get things packed up. He sold our 1990 Camry, and then he and his brother (who flew out from Pennsylvania) loaded my beloved Labrador Molly in the back of the Pathfinder and made it across the country to Virginia in record time by taking turns driving while the other slept in the shotgun seat.

The Pathfinder was still registered in Pennsylvania when I'd last seen it in California. My parents deposited me at my Grandma's house in Pennsylvania for a couple weeks while the dealt with the logistics of moving everything across the country and closing on our new house in Virginia Beach. When my parents arrived at my Grandma's house to pick me up and see our new house in person for the first time, one of the first things my mom excited pointing out (knowing how obsessed I was with cars) the shiny new Virginia license plates on our 2-year old Pathfinder. We lived in Virginia Beach from 1998 to 2000, Whidbey Island (specifically Oak Harbor, Washington) from 2000 to 2002, and the DC metro area (Northern Virginia) from 2002 to 2005. Seeing as as the Pathfinder spent five of those seven years in Virginia, we kept it registered there. We finally moved back to Pennsylvania in 2005 and, seeing as my dad retired in October 2007, initially planned on keeping the vehicles registered in Virginia until he retired to circumvent getting them inspected in Pennsylvania every year

I got my learner's permit in December 2005. The Pathfinder was supposed to be my first vehicle, with my dad signing the title over to me when I graduated high school. In May 2006, my dad was giving me a driving lesson in the parking lot of a local hospital. Security officials took notice of "a couple of guys in an SUV with out-of-state plates" circling the parking lot for more than an hour. The best course of action the rent-a-nazis could come up with was calling the real cops. I was just pulling out of the hospital parking lot to go on the main road when a marked Crown Vic pulled up behind me and pulled me over. I was absolutely dumbfounded as to why I was being pulled over, as I'd done nothing wrong. The cop explained the whole situation, and of course we'd done nothing wrong so there were no tickets to give. However, the inattentive cop seemingly only noticed the Virginia plates while failing to notice the DoD sticker on the front windshield, the "FLY NAVY NAVAL AVIATION" frame around the rear license plate, and numerous Navy stickers on the back window. My dad had switched his license from New Jersey to Pennsylvania in late 2005, and this cop did not know Pennsylvania motor vehicle code, which was rather pathetic in my opinion because the primary job of a suburban cop is enforcing laws relating to motor vehicle code and traffic infractions. The cop proceeded to lecture my dad about how if he had been living in Pennsylvania for so many months, he had to register his vehicle in Pennsylvania. My dad kept his cool, but I could see the veins in his neck throbbing. He pulled out his military ID and stated politely but firmly that he was active duty Navy and thus well within his rights to have his vehicle registered outside the state. End of story. The cop sent us on our way, but both hospital and that cop completely ruined what was supposed to be fun day of not just learning how to drive but spending time with my dad. My dad made me get in the shotgun seat and drove us home. With two or three weeks, he'd registered the Pathfinder, my mom's minivan, and his Harley in Pennsylvania. Though he was legally able to keep them registered in Virginia, he chose to register them in Pennsylvania because he didn't want to stick out to police, especially with a teenage student driver.

I inadvertently let my permit expire and didn't get a new one until August 2009. By that time, the Pathfinder had over 100K miles and was really beginning to show its age. It ran and drove great, but it seemed like it needed something fixed every time we got it inspected. It also got horrible gas mileage and would knock unless gas of 91 octane or higher was used. We traded it for the Tacoma in September 2009. Because the Tacoma was obviously a truck, and the Pathfinder was considered a passenger vehicle, the plate could not be transferred from the Pathfinder to the Tacoma. The plate on the Pathfinder was a little over three years old at the time and in perfect condition.

By comparison, Virginia does not require a pickup truck to get a special plate unless it's a commercial vehicle. After selling the 1990 Camry to a couple back in California, my mom started driving the Pathfinder and my dad bought a 1990 Mazda B2600 pickup in October 1998. This was solely a commuter vehicle that my dad did not intend to keep very long. He registered it shortly after he bought it, and when we traded it for a new GMC Safari in 2000, the Mazda's plates were transferred to the van. When we traded the Safari for a new Honda Odyssey in 2004, those plates were transferred to the Odyssey and remained on it until my dad registered it in Pennsylvania following the hospital incident.

I've had the plates transferred before, and even that takes at least a month to process. It doesn't make any sense since it's all digital! :annoyed:

Hell of a story on the vehicle that ultimately lead to you owning your Taco!
I can understand your dad wanting to just get local plates for the sake of not drawing attention. Why stick out if you don't have to?
I had a similar experience when I moved back to Florida from Tennessee in high school. Kept my TN plates a touch too long and got a lovely roadside lecture from a Trooper about residency along with my tag border slightly obscuring the name of the state on the tag.
