I've got 4 cans of Anthracite Gray on the way and will be doing the surround and bumper caps next weekend. I'll post pics when I'm done, but I've seen several posts on here where it looks really good.

In my experience, PlastiDip is soft enough to chip and peel easily (lightly backing up against a bush or driving through some light hail) but still sticks well enough to be a PITA to remove.

Dont plastidip that... too big of an area it will look cheap. Sometimes even plastidip on emblems gives cars/trucks a down graded look. I've plastidipped a lot of things in the past to know its meh in the end lol.

If it wasn't $500, I'd have already done this! I've already got the color-matched SR5 grille on my list, just trying to space out my purchases a little.

On the plus side, if the plasti looks like shit in the meantime, it'll peel off and I'm only out ~$30 and a couple hours of work.

I plastidipped my bumper ends, and it looks great. Doesn't look anything close to cheap. I've gotten lots of compliments on it from people who saw them chrome before.

So I would purchase the surround and the hood bulge correct? How much did that cost you? That’s ultimately the look I want...or the 2018 sport grille

Yes, and if you want the limited insert just remove it out of a chrome version and stick it in the color matched surround.

I’m gonna plastidip the bumper ends this week and see how it looks. Yours look great. Gonna get a quote to get the surround and hood bulge painted MGM. Hopefully it makes cents $$

    Question.
What sticks better and holds up longer to plastic chrome grill inserts, Plastidip or spray paint?

Plastidip if installed correctly. Although I spray painted my wife’s limited wheels to a gray color like 6 years ago and they still look factory painted. It’s all about prep and doing it right.

Here’s a good MGM Plastidip thread.

Here’s the 2018 TRD sport honeycomb.
I didn’t Plastidip the grill and surround, but I did do the bumper ends. The factory painted parts were purchased through Roman on this forum.
The grill/surround I believe should match the factory paint (color and surface texture). The bumper ends, not so much. There is plastic in the middle of the bumpers that do not have the slick glossy factory paint finish.

Don’t forget glossifier. And I’d order the spray can handle that dipyourcar sells with the dip. With the handle you get a lot more of a consistent spray, which leaves the texture of the dip more like paint than what others have experienced with dip.

Word. I spray-painted some bare metal rock sliders a while back, and I took the time to do a good job. I am astonished how well it worked, it was totally worth the trouble. I painstakingly created a dropcloth paint-room in my garage, half-assed together some 2x4s to hold up the sliders so I could spray them in a continuous motion, did 5 or 6 coats over a couple of days, did a light sanding and vacuum in between each coat. The whole time, I was telling myself it would never work and the paint would chip off in a few months. But they have taken a bunch of harsh winters and off-roading, and still look great. And any time I bang one with a rock, I just zap it with the ol' black rattle-can and it's good as new.

    Yep! It’s prep and process!
Here’s my wife’s wheels I did 6 years back. She’s gone through 2 sets of Goodyear Duratracs and will be getting a 3rd set here shortly. Multiple tire rotations and whatnot.
I did do I believe 3 coats of the wheel clear coat, which I believe helped a lot.
The biggest flaw is some tape on the bottom that I didn’t remove and painted over lol.

Yeah, no problemo when prepping and painting wheels or steal.
I'm talking about prepping and painting plastic grill components.

Guess I got a little off topic -- I had actually considered this with my grill because the front of my 2018 LTD is waaay too much chrome for my taste. I had assumed you would brush a texture into the chrome with a wire wheel and then spray it with whatever fancy spray you want. Then I thought maybe I'd just have them Line-X the parts when I did my spray in bedliner. Then I got lazy and thought I'd just live with it until I get an aftermarket bumper and reevaluate my priorities at that time.

I’ve used Plastidip on my Lexus grilles that lasted 6 years without issue.
15 years ago I spray painted my old Tacoma grill, and a year later rock chips were showing. It was a constant up keep on the spray paint.

Has anyone tried having the grills coated with a line X or Rhino Liner coating? I have a 2019 Cement color on the way, I was going to purchase the paint matched hood bulge and look into have the bumper ends, grill and grill surround done with one of them. My only concern is how the product holds up on chrome / plastic pieces.

Please don’t rhino line them LOL.
No offense to those who have done it, but I would guess the majority would say they just don’t look good.
There’s too much texture in the liner materials, and on a brand new truck it just doesn’t look right.
It’s costly to swap over to all paint matched parts, but it’s worth it.
    That’s my 2 cents :)

Here is an acquaintances’ Ford

Thanks for the pictures, that doesn't look good at all! I'll probably just get a quote from the local body shop to get the current surround and end caps paint matched, possibly have them paint the grill black. Seems like having one of the new Tundras with the TSS system makes the paint matching game a little harder and more expensive.

Half of that ugly is the fact that it's a Ford.

might be ugly but its still twice the truck tundra is...literally, it tows 21,000 pounds.

I agree on bedliner, it belongs in the bed, not body panels. it looks awful, reminds me of sandpaper or non-skid boat decking.

Obviously we don’t give a shit what it tows, that’s why we’re in Tundras. (Although I do have a fleet of cumins that tow 105,500 lbs if need be).
Twice the towing and twice the time in the repair shop or in your garage torn apart for the Ford.
Guess it depends on what you mean exactly by twice the truck.
