hey all, I was wondering if anybody had good luck painting their chrome door handles and mirror covers and hood bulge? I know the bulge and door handles are available, but it'd seem significantly cheaper to get it painted? was wondering how anybody's held up.

fortunately i found a platinum grille on craiglist for cheap but couldn't decide whether or buy the bulge for 220 shipped oem new, or get everything painted, I'd want to paint the bumper caps as well, as the door handles, on my old tacoma, the handles were black so i got them painted at body shop and it held up great

It's something I eventually would like to do ... in a general sense, assuming it was professionally done meaning primer, base-coat and clear-coat then it should hold up like any other factory part given enough time to cure. If it's a rattle can job, then you might see some premature wear on the handles specifically. In the end chrome wont be much different from anything else, scuff and go from there.

You might have to take the parts off the truck yourself, but stop by a couple of body shops and see how much they'd charge you to color match. It might just be cheaper to buy them prepainted online.

I just ended up buying the color matched parts from sparks.com. I purchased the front caps color matched and mirror covers colors matched. I have the limited so the rear bumpers are color matched

Painted my own. Paint is way cheaper than those parts new and colormatched and I like a project.

Rear bumper is getting bed lined (by myself) and front is getting ripped off eventually.

    I'm a gen 2, same shit tho

got a couple quotes, they were like 500-700 for the door handles, mirror covers, hood bulge, and front endcaps, so i decided to start painting them myself,

Couldn’t get a glossy finish with the clear coat

Looks good ... For gloss do a light coat first, then wait the flash time, then you can do medium-heavy ... The first coat will give the clear something to stick to and lessen the chance of a run.

Black plastic is easier to paint than the chorme pieces. Some places will paint while others will not. You could always plastidip them, but as evidence by a coworkers Tacoma, eventually the chrome will peak through with wear and tear. Buy the right color matched or plastic parts to be painted correctly. Buy once cry once.
