My Tundra is Supersonic Red also and the chips are in the exact spot as yours. Dealer is waiting on a response from Toyota as to what the fix is. I do know that that color is a three step process to paint.

Mine was there before I popped a cover on. I did think that too and was going to wonder if the dealer was going to give push back due to the cover. But they approved to fix mine. Just waiting for a loaner/ rental approval as I was told since it is not a safety issue, they usually don't give you a loaner/ rental. I call BS on that. I need a vehicle to shuttle my minions to school and such. Not my fault your design has paint chipping off.

    UPDATE:
I finally got my truck back yesterday, after 5 weeks at the dealership. I had to contact the Toyota Brand Engagement Center and initiate a service task in order to get one of their engineers to come up with an authorized repair for the chipping. Their fix was to paint the whole tailgate and place something under the plastic trim to lift it up and keep it from rubbing against the paint. Toyota did provide me with a rental during this time.

I to have joined the chip club. I'd add a pic but you guys know what it looks like....Already scheduled to go back(again lol) to the dealership next week for something else so I'll see what they have to say then. When they did their comp oil change they dented the hood(sigh). Guessing they had a tool in their hand or something when shutting it...IDK.

I’m 1.5 years in now without going to my dealers service department for anything. No one seems to care anymore about the quality of their work. At least in your case a good PDR person can fix that dent, even though aluminum makes things a little more difficult

I've also worn it down to the metal. They didn't think this through. My mileage is around 10,000.

I've had my truck for a year and have the tailgate rub/chipping issue in 4 spots. Never noticed anything until this fall when it started getting colder again. Must be expanding in hot weather or something. I'm going to bring it up next week when I take my truck in because the dealer has to fix some chips in the paint of my wheels after they stripped the wheel locks when doing a tire rotation. I'm also going to take a look at any of the trucks in the lot to see if there are any factory new heat expansion issues on the tailgates.

I talked to the service manager for my dealer this morning about what I am seeing on my tailgate. He said he's dealing with it on his own personal Tundra as well and Toyota is aware of the issue. He said he's going to send in pics of my truck to the service rep who was already at the dealer taking pics of trucks on the lot. He said as of now just to wait because they are waiting on the fix to come out from Toyota, which is what he is waiting on as well. He is thinking it will be a recall but who knows maybe just a TSB or something.

Toyota has already come up with a fix. A Toyota engineer came up with the fix for my truck. Have you dealer reference Toyota case #231013001850.

So shop that installed ppf on front hood and bumpers also put a small strip under the problem area below handle corners. The right side was tighter than left clearence area and bubbled up a very small portion of the ppf but really don't notice unless looking for it. As far as the sides up near the top, it seems the pro doesn't have much space showing and what paint is showing looks fine. Originally wanted to ppf under the whole upper tailgate but the installer ended up not wanting to risk breaking or damaging the spoiler piece.

Anyone have a platinum and same thing? Any outcome? Was it from factory or from heat? Repainting will just cause it again if heat and expansion.

It's from heat and expansion. I watched mine do it throughout the summer. People are getting them repainted, but like you said it's going happen again. I touched mine up with paint and put a little silicone on it and it seems to be working well. I will take mine in if they come out with an actual fix for it.

Thank you. Yes I pulled up some pics from the spring and it was not there. I will note to dealership on Wednesday when I go in for the plastic side molding on doors that expanded and bent back when opening rear door.

Live in South Carolina so the plastic platinum parts, door trim. hood badge all expand in heat

I have this exact same issue on my 23 Platinum, shows the yellow undercoat at the tailgate release and also has what appears to be chips on both sides of the upper tailgate where it closes. Showed it to the dealer and he stated that they would send something to Toyota. While waiting at the dealership I noticed a new 24 Limited sitting inside the showroom which also had the paint wear below the release and chips in the exact same places as mine. Showed this to the service manager and he just said hmmmm. Not sure what will come of this but I plan on checking back in with the dealer after the holidays. They Have a 24 Pro in Terra sitting on the lot, gonna go check the paint status of it tomorrow.

I have a theory that all the painted spoilers are the ones rubbing the un painted plastic ones have more clearance than the others. My FiLs ‘24 platinum (painted gloss black) has the wear marks with less than 1000 miles. My ‘23 SR (unpainted plastic) doesnt have any marks (yet) with 5500 miles. Just a guess, i could be 100% incorrect.

Add my to the list. I removed the spoiler to wrap it and touched up the rubbed areas with touchup paint. It had worn completely down to the bare metal. 9,000 miles

Just came back from the dealer, and they have been authorized (I'm guessing by Toyota) to repaint the tailgate. My initial thoughts are that this is not a solution to the problem. A temp fix yes, but I can only assume it will be a recurring issue.

I also checked the 2 2024's they had onsite and neither showed the chips and wear that the 23's have shown. Maybe they fixed the issue for the 24's

I did finally! Week before last they took my truck to a body shop and repainted the tailgate and spaced out the top plastic piece to prevent it from it happening again. There were 2 little spots on the sides where the paint rubbed off that they didn't catch but painted over them. No big deal. By the handle is repaired and paint match is perfect (Army Green).

Count me in with missing paint on the left and right side of the tailgate. Have to check out the wear on the handle area and see if that rubbed through.
Update, I checked.... has the same issue in the handle area that others are having.

I've been enjoying a new driver side clunk when I first get going with the truck.
Seems to go away after a few miles. I checked the skid plate and transmission plates, they are on nice and solid.
I have to find my go pro and put it down there. Maybe I can isolate it better. When I bring this in for the paint issue I guarantee it wont make a noise for the tech out of fear.
