You have to practice with what you’re going to hunt with! I’m telling ya, the one time you end up with a nice chance at a trophy buck the last thing you want is an equipment failure! :)

    This is true...

Missed a really nice whitetail with my bow because I went cheap on my release. It released in my draw back and arrow just dropped basically. He looked at me snorted and ran off.

I will be switching to my hunting caps next weekend when I go shooting again. Thanks.

It pains me to think about missing animals like that lol. You spend soooooo much time hunting, then you have a shot and it goes south.
I used to think I was invincible. Every animal I killed for years was one shot, dropped like rocks. My first bow season I took the cow at 70 yards, dropped 20 yards from where I shot her.
    Then......I stopped practicing so much.
    Baaad idea :-(
I missed 5 animals in one year.

Ouch...that sucks. Yes it is a lot of work for things to go south. I don't think I'd stop shooting even if I stopped hunting. Bow is just too much fun not to shoot. Can't wait til I get a new compound. Old Martin will be turned into fishing bow.

This is another reason I want to get into bow hunting. It would be nice to be able to shoot in my backyard. My neighbors probably wouldn't appreciate it much if I start back yard target practice with my 06!

I don't know, where I grew up we looked at you weird if you didn't site in off the front porch
The only thing that sucks about back yard shooting with the bow is you need a good backstop and you need at least 40 yards. I shot all the time at twenty for form when starting but you need to be able to practice longer shots as well. I don't feel comfortable over 50 myself. But if you don't practice the longer shots as well you will be missing a lot of opportunities.

I agree with you. I practice all my shooting at longer distance than I think I will ever need. It makes those closer shots feel like nothing. I have access to a 500 yard range 20 minutes from my house, and a good friend of mine runs a long range shooting school with a mile long range. But it would be nice to get a little practice in after work without having to leave the house. The 5 year plan includes a new house on 10+ acres so that should help with my shooting habits lol.

Practice out as far as you can! We used to only practice out to 50, then upgraded bows, sights, arrows, rests etc and would practice out to 90. Which really helps. Every little mistake you notice 10 times over at 90. You're a lot more confident dropping an animal at 50 yards after you know you can punch a group at 90 too. When we would go back to 40, we couldn't shoot at one spot more than once because we were splitting arrows/fletching - a good problem to have.
Now, I just plain suck LOL. I have 300 yards to shoot (rifle or bow) but my time has been so tied up in normal day to day life with property/kids I haven't even shot the target deer my wife bought me for Christmas that's in my back yard. I can even shoot out of my garage when it's raining LOL!
And hunting season is damn near right around the corner :-(

Lucky! I wish I had access to that. I just find feel free that is good to shoot or sometimes old farmer let's me let a few off. But still 30 minute drive now.

Good luck with a house and property! I'd love to find river property around here. About 5-10 acres would be awesome. Just pipe dream right now. Maybe some day.

It's amazing what 10 yards will do for accuracy. I feel comfortable out to 50. Probably could do sixty but at sixty my groupings expand exponentially. Only been out to 70 as that's as far as I can go with the barn as a backstop at my dad's place.

Season is in less than 2 months! So ready but not ready lol. Be here before we know it.

I don't live at the river house - the river property is 2 acres - I'm only 33% owner :) Thankfully the other guys never use it though!
We just built our house on 13.5 acres about 20 minutes away. And it's not all its stacked up to be. I'm busting my ass daily around the place! It's insane how much work needs to be done.
It's a full-time job on top of my full time job LOL. Sure - nice problems to have - but still serious problems. It's not for everyone.

Yes, 10 yards is a HUGE difference! I missed a 4x4 bull twice at 35 yards because I was confident he was at 45 yards (ravine through my judgement off).
Your sight is the ticket to shooting longer distances, well - and practice of course lol.

2 months - yep, so ready but not ready! Me too!!! I still have a decent amount of elk/deer in the freezer from last year too - which is always nice. We usually have it polished off by now.

Land owners jobs are never done. The bigger they are the more work that's going to be needed. But yes not for everyone. But worth it to see the fruits of your labor.

Lucky, I have 2 packages of burger and 1 package of backstrap I am saving for when I go hunting with my buddy. Firm believer of deer what you are hunting to help you get more! And it's worked so far!
