I need to get into bow hunting. That way I can get my deer before bird season starts. I only get so many weekends to hunt so I feel guilty leaving the dogs during rifle season when we can be going after birds.

You can do muzzleloader as well...I believe it starts before pheasant at least. Archery is fun. I have the multiseason deer tag this year so it will be my first outing with muzzleloader if I don't get something with the bow.

That is a good point. I don't really know much about either but archery has always interested me.

For me it was getting tired of other idiots with riffles. Looked like a pumpkin patch out there. Switched to archery and fell in love with it.

I did this as well for a while. But for the past 4 years we switch it up depending on where we plan to hunt/focus.
I’ve been doing Archery Elk (WA West) and rifle deer. I usually pull a multi-deer tag so basically hunting damn near every weekend Sept-Dec.

    Very nice work!!!
I fish but not as much as I hunt. Used to have a boat and fished the Columbia every run, but swapped for Elk/Deer.
We had a big 4th party yesterday and have been eating Springer for nearly every meal Lol (4 different Springer dishes people brought up - and a huge fillet for our dinner tonight).
Did the Gordon Ramsey pan fry recipe tonight. The best recipe ever!
We picked up some kayaks today for the cabin - did a quick paddle/fish. I’ll be fishing off and on tomorrow (Kalama).
We just push em off the bank and paddle up - float back down.

Has anyone told you to put fresh powder in your rifle every time you get the chance?
I learned all sorts of lessons the hard way my first year. Biggest Elk I ever seen/missed (6x8 1000# lead bull pushing 20+ heard) I had a hangfire because of a POS New Traditions Muzzle loader that had trigger group issues. Sportsman’s told me I could return it (used) and pick out a new one. Gun counter guy said “oh yea, those have issues - we have 8 returns in the back”.
Make sure to keep the powder dry. Religiously keep a barrel condom on. Even if it’s not raining - just do it.
Also missed a 3x3 buck with the same crap rifle.

Looks like a blast. I hunt more than fish as well. Never hunted the west side...always been over here on the east. One of these years I should switch it up just to say I did.

We’ve always wanted to hunt Muleys out your way, just haven’t picked a year to do it. :D
There’s a lot of Elk in the west units, you just have to find them. I’m a long range rifle guy, and it kills me to hunt Elk with a bow. I’ve only killed a cow with bow, and missed a few nice bulls unfortunately.
We normally backpack in and stay a few nights.

I love mulie hunting. It is what keeps me on this side of the state every year. I need to find some guys willing to backpack in or at least drive and set up camp. All my buddies are married with kids and don't want to stay out anymore. Just day hunts. Feel like I am missing out sometimes. Just don't have the balls to do it on my own I guess.

Yep! If you do a morning/evening - fire the powder out at lunch time and load new when going in for our evening.
It may sound expensive, but you’ll be kicking yourself in the ass soooo hard when your shit doesn’t fire when you pull the trigger on a nice animal.
All 3 guys I hunt with have all had problems and we’re running everything from a $200 CVA to a $800 Thompson.

Also - did you get the survey from WDFW on the 209 primers? If not check your email and respond YES!! We need 209 primers soooo bad!! Many people hunt with them illegally - I’m by the book so use musket caps. They are our biggest disadvantage and one of the only states that still requires musket caps.
Also - which caps are you using? Almost every musket cap is for “reinactment” even the CCI’s! I think the RWS caps are the good ones for hunting.
And don’t always listen to the Sportmans Warehouse folks unless they show you pictures of animals they’ve killed with Muzzles. The ones I’ve encountered didn’t know shit. :)

Oh man - LOL. We’ve never hunted without a camp. We setup a deer base camp, and have a lot more fun.
Archery is balls to the wall. Last year I put 80 something miles on my boots in a week.
We have all of the super-lightweight backpacking gear.
Eta - and in our group we all have wives and kids. It’s tough to do, but thankfully it’s Sept-Dec, so not exactly the primo family vacation time Lol. My wife makes me setup my own babysitters for taking the kids to school every morning, and she used to get really frustrated with me being gone so much. It’s much better now though. And our kids are 6 and 10 - a little older so they can take care of themselves for the most part.

I’ve camped solo many times as well. It’s lonely - very lonely. And a little bit scary when you back pack in and setup camp solo. If I break my ankle off trail (off trail 95% of time) I’m screwed. You learn to watch every step carefully :)
(Eta, and don’t forget your sidearm when camping solo archery hunting - in the middle of nowhere, in the dark, in a tiny as tent alone with only a bow doesn’t make you feel the safest lol)

Not sure on the caps, still new to me, but I have two, one that's illegal and one that's ok to use. I have been using the illegals as it was my uncle's from another state and he wants them used up during target shooting as he is now a Washington resident and can't use them anymore either.

Deer camp sounds amazing. I usually hunt dry land farms when I can get permission and public land. Only about 20 minutes from my house were I grew up, my dad's place, so no camping. I have been heading into the blues more though and would love to set up camp for a week.
