Most of the time while towing I just put the truck in D Tow/Haul mode and drive. There are times when I want total control and shift into S mode/Gearlock like long distance on the highway to keep it from shifting down in the rolling hills, and at the boat ramp to keep it in power and not upshift halfway up the ramp, Etc... Feel free to PM me with any other questions :)

No. Not manual. If you have Gear Lock + Direct Shift, then that's the closest to manual. Direct Shift will let you manually upshift the transmission without the computer interfering. It is instantaneous. Gear Lock holds the gear until you downshift manually or if the rpm falls below 1500, then the transmission will automatically downshift. If you have Gear Lock feature, go on a highway, put the transmission on S mode, shift up to 6th gear. Now press the accelerator hard, it should not downshift above 1500 rpm. Now this allows you to use all the available torque for that rpm. if the rpm drops low, then it is time to downshift manually to 5th.

Just be careful not to forget that you have this feature specially if you are going to pass a slow vehicle on a two lane highway. The transmission will not downshift even if you floor it unless the rpm is below 1500. if you don't feel comfy with this feature you can request to have this feature removed.

Shouldn’t take that long unless it is a new ecu calibration that isn’t yet supported. @OVTune

2010 5.7 non flex fuel. And he has not said anything about it being an oddball ECU.

To me, being used to manual transmissions my entire life, this gear lock direct shift sounds like the optimum towing setup.

Mat, when you posted this I couldn't help but feel like something was missing...

    The flex fuel tuning

Are you still planning on this?

It is and can be under certain circumstances as long as you remember to row through the gears up and down. Like Art64 said just dont forget to downshift if passing someone or pulling a load up a hill. I find it especially useful for holding upper gears on long highway trips and the tight twisty and hilly back road over to the boat ramp myself. I too have driven a manual most of my life and still have them in my Cobra and Shelby and without the clutch and actual shift pattern it can be just awkward enough that I have had a brain fart mid hill while towing waiting for the truck to downshift and suddenly realizing/remembering I had to do it myself.

    @OVTune

Fellow modified 18's this is a direct quote from the "Dealer Letter"

"NOTE: If a vehicle has non-Toyota-approved modifications that have changed the ride height of the vehicle or the factory installed position of the millimeter wave radar sensor, the owner will be required to sign the “Non-Toyota-Approved Modification - Owner Acknowledgment Form” before the remedy is performed. The remedy for modified vehicles includes the following additional steps:

    • PCS will be set to “OFF”.
    • PCS will be configured to retain the last setting following a key cycle.
    • A notification label instructing the driver to use Constant Speed Control and not to use Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) will be applied to the dashboard.
    • An owner’s manual insert will be placed in the owner’s manual.

Not all vehicles with non-Toyota-approved modifications will have the remedy performed.

Examples of non Toyota-approved modifications the remedy WILL be performed:

    • Modifications that affect ride height, such as lift kits, and/or oversized wheels/tires.
    • Toyota original equipment grilles installed on trucks that were not originally intended for the trim level of the vehicle.

Examples of non-Toyota approved modifications on which the remedy can NOT be performed:

    • Aftermarket grilles
    • Grille guards
    • Winches
    • Light bars
    • Aftermarket steel bumpers

In these cases, if the owner restores the vehicle to its original design at his/her expense, the remedy will be performed."

I guess I got lucky. I have an 18 with a 3" lift, the dealership, without question, recalibrated and updated the software for the PCS system after my bodyshop replaced my hood & grill surround when a big tree branch fell on it.

Thanks for posting this, it definitely varies from dealership to dealership.

Haven't found (honestly haven't looked in all 2440 posts) an answer to this....... with the tune and gear lock, etc, does the tranny still shift to 4th gear when moving along in 6th gear in D? I always hated that feature, driving along at 65-70 and having it go to 4th gear when you move the lever to "S".

my 2008 sequoia and my 2018 Tacoma do this when shifting into S mode... just a Toyota thing i guess, but i typically just go straight to S mode right when i first get in. not sure if this is something Mat can change with the tune

I've suggested a feature/option/functionality for the transmission to go to whatever current gear it's in when going from Drive to S-Mode, but that's as far as it went.

Yes, but keep in mind OVTune is a small semi-custom tune shop and they are working on and finishing for release other tunes besides ours. A bit of patience involved but it will reward you with the most comprehensive and best remote tune available for our trucks.

I don't mean this in any sort of poopy or disrespectful way, but a bit of patience means settle in for the long haul. Probably months before the entire tune is completed. It's not necessarily a bad thing and completely worth it. This is the best and only real way to go.

Yep. A lot of people don’t understand this takes time and there is still active development going on. Some of the Tacoma guys are real bad about it. I first tuned my Tacoma 11/2017 and it has gotten better with each update.

it sounds like the tundra is less complex though and mat has learned a lot from deciphering the taco madness so once that’s wrapped up, I’m guessing the tundra will progress quite rapidly.

Got my tune and tried to flash but get the dongle not installed error. The dongle is seen by the logger and shows installed in Device Manager.

I uninstalled & reinstalled & rebooted the computer.

    What do I do now?

I was able to do the flash, using a different USB cable.

I'll do the logs on my way to work tomorrow & submit them.

It wouldn't work with the cable that came with it? I thought that was supposed to be some kind of special cable...

No sir. Not for the flash. I am in IT & have a stupid high end networking tool that came with a very high quality cable that worked.

The weird thing is that it is fine for the logger.
