Overland Tune on a Tundra

The trans tuning alone is worth it. Don’t go thinking you’ll feel massive power differences. What you’ll feel is a better power delivery.

I don’t have the time yet but everyone who has it says it’s totally worth it.

 

You’ll need to decide if it’s worth it to you, but I say yes. You won’t see big gains in PEAK hp or torque, but the curves should be much flatter and get you more power in a better rpm range. For example, my peak torque only increased about 17 lb ft, but it now makes peak at about 2,900 rpm instead of 3,800. That’s big deal shit there.
Peak hp went up a little under 10, but it’s up a lot more in the lower rpm range.

This means that it pulls way harder in the mid range rpm than before, and still a little more in the high rpm range.

Don’t even get me started on the transmission control improvements. That part alone will make such a difference in drivability.

Pay less attention to the 10 PEAK hp increase and more attention to what the overall program will look like.

 

Do you see all those improvements in the off the shelf version? Or did you do a custom tune?

 

Engine tuning was custom, done on a dyno.

Transmission tuning was done after, on my own. Too hard to dial in a transmission without driving it, and it took me several iterations before I was happy with it for towing as well as daily use.

For daily use only, I’d imagine a canned tune might be close enough.

 

Well, I just booked my reservation for them in May. They are coming to Mo and I sure hope I get the same results, as I am wanting it 95% for the tranny shifts.

 

Finally got my '17 NA done this week, and I got to say what a difference. took care of my TSB update and set me up with a Medium & Spicy (Tow Haul button) OTT tune. The responsiveness is a night and day difference. If you're in Central Florida and on the fence, send him a message, very helpful. And he's give out awesome swag!

 

That makes it much more believable and desirable to me. If it touted huge increase in peak horsepower, I would not believe it at all.

besides what I would really be after is that difference in the torque you mentioned. That would make a huge difference

 

Did you have to sign the release waver so they are not responsible in case it bricks the ECU?

I’m scheduled to get the OTT tune in Denver tomorrow. I’m looking forward to seeing how it shakes out.

Seems like it is largely throttle response but if it does that, combined with just a little more torque where we need it and improves shifting then I'll be very pleased

 

i was going to schedule one for this weekend too...but fresh snow means i'll def be skiing

 

I got the mild throttle response settings, took like 6 minutes to get the tune loaded. Truck is still running and ECU isnt bricked, so that's a win.

I'll provide some more feedback once I have some more pedal time.

 

Curious, is it common for the ecu to brick or what are the odds that it happening?

 

It does happen but not common. Usually happens when battery is below 12v and not on a charger. Some happened because loss of signal during the write process. Lots of us change the ecu tune frequently with only a few having issues.

Just had mine done this morning with Jeff at Relentless Tuning in Alabama

I went with the medium and I am very pleased. Better throttle response. I love the shifting

it was of course slightly more sluggish after I put the 305 32s on last month. This more than compensates for that and IMO makes it noticeably better than when it was new with the factory tires and wheels

I just got back from a 3,000 mile roadtrip pulling our travel trailer. I like this tune!

throttle response and shift points are much improved. When towing, the truck doesn’t get “wrung out” like it used to under heavy loads. Power delivery is smoother and gear hunting is definitely reduced.

when not towing, the truck is more “awake” and responsive. Definitely more fun to drive without being obnoxious. I wouldn’t want the throttle any more sensitive than it is now. It would be too jumpy for my liking, especially in snow.

have you seen mpg benefits with the Mild tune overall?

 

Nothing noticeable. Could have improved slightly but let’s be real.. I’m driving a 6000 pound lifted truck on 35’s. Mileage ain’t great. The dude that did the tune said you might see like a 1 mpg increase, but even on a stock truck that would be hard to accurately measure. I can say that after another 5k miles I’m still happy with the tune!

ETA: I’m pretty sure the mild/med/spicy levels are in reference to throttle sensitivity. My understanding is The engine/transmission tune are the same regardless of throttle sensitivity.

Can you tell me how you had the truck tuned? I'm getting this done on mine this weekend. The truck is used as a weekend driver on the occasion. But definitely a tow pig when it's Towing my 20 ft enclosed trailer to and from the track. The truck is a 2019 and has just over 21,000 miles. It doesn't get driven frequently. I'd say about half of the mileage is towing with a trailer. I do typically use the tow haul button. Maybe I won't have to use that after the tune but was trying to find out what to go with and what type of throttle response. My truck is all bone stock. A drop in dry air filter

 

I got the mild/medium tune. I like the increased throttle response, but I would not want it any touchier, especially in the snow. If I put it in S4 and engage tow/haul it will easily chirp the tires when launching at a red light.

I definitely still use the tow/haul button when pulling travel trailer. Gear hunting is reduced and it holds gears better. I live in CO and regularly tow up and down grades that are fairly brutal.

it’s good tune. I think 5.29 gears would make a bigger difference, but that’s on a different level in terms of cost and complexity.

 

Good to hear. That is what I got (mild/medium), my tuner didn't say about any adjustments to the throttle sensitivity, but i didn't want to make it any more touchy either. I also tow typically in drive and tow haul mode. I learned over the weekend that I'm supposed to tow in S4 and tow haul mode. I've never used it before but I will give it a go next time.

I noticed it held the gears longer for sure and it lowered the idle. Other than that no changes have really been noticed yet

 

Sure wish I woulda started to monitor my oil temp and transmission temp via a Veepeak reader and OBD Fusion BEFORE I regeared my truck. Curious if there is any appreciable difference since there should be less load on everything upstream of the axle…

 

I have my transmission fluid temp setup at the pan and the torque converter in my *torque" app I did see how high both of these were. But being that mine is a 2019. It is the first year that they removed the external transmission cooler. My transmission fluid temp was extremely high. But I ended up adding the thermostatic control from the 2018 and plumbed in fluid lines and an external transmission cooler mounted in front of my radiator. In doing this I noticed my transmission fluid temperatures dropped to what I feel is a completely normal level. I made a very in-depth and detailed thread on the Forum regarding this I'm just glad that I took the time to install this external transmission cooler because seeing my fluid temperatures over 240° while not towing, and cruising, on flat land. I thought that was asinine
