Don’t think anyone mentioned The Last of the Mohicans. I read it over and over when I was a kid.

Really all of this qualifies! Good reading all around is worth mentioning too. I just enjoy books about adventures, obstacles, hardships and man living with nature/vs nature. I’m heading to the book store today. So many choices I’m terrified for this thread to continue because I’ll never keep up!

I’ve read all of Karakauers stuff. Really enjoyed Under the Banner of Heaven. Dragged my feet getting into it (many years ago) and I ended up reading it in less than a week.

In this order: The Overmountain Men, The Border Men and The Canebrake Men. All three by Cameron Judd. Begins in 1750 at Ft. Loudon, Va. and follows the protagonist from age 10 to age 50 as he helps settle East Tennessee. The books follow historical events with some actual people like John Sevier, the Boone family, a young Andrew Jackson and others interwoven into the stories. It tells the story of the Cherokee aid to the British and then the rise of the Chickamauga's who were disgusted with the encroachment of the white man into their territories and broke from the more peaceful Cherokee natives who wanted peace.

This was an excellent read if you enjoy history. Traveling all around the areas where the story takes place made it even better for me.

Of course The Old Man and the Boy, by Robert Ruark, is also an excellent read. We often vacation around Southport/Wilmington/Oak Island and his grandparent's house is still standing in Southport as a B&B now. I remember sitting at the "whittling tree" several times (before it was blown down in a hurricane) looking out over the Cape Fear while waiting on my wife to finish shopping.

Finished the last book of the Harden series yesterday. I gotta say that while it was good,I preferred the first series.

The Revenant led me to read Jim Bridger, Mountain Man, a biography by Stanley Vestal. A great read, how he survived everything he did was amazing.

Though a little different I also enjoyed Forlorn Hope: the Nez Perce victory at White Bird canyon. Examines the history, course and aftermath of the battle in good detail.
