I have an extended family vacation coming up in the Orlando, FL area at the beginning of September. I am in Orlando frequently for work, but outside of where to get a steak and a good beer I am pretty much at a loss for what to do with my family (wife, 16 year old daughter and 7 year old son).

Currently we have the following planned and paid:

Kennedy Space Center Tour, full day
    Disney Magic Kingdom, full day
    Disney Hollywood Whatchamacallit, full day
    Cocoa Beach, Full Day
Fort De Soto Park, Full Day

This leaves me 4-5 days where we don't have something planned. I was wondering if anyone from or familiar with the area might have any suggestions for good, fun family activities. We were considering the Science Center. I'd love to add some more nature to our stay - the Everglades are a bit of a hop from Orlando but I'd absolutely be willing to make the drive if we could experience them without having to pay hundreds of dollars for a guided tour.

    Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

You could drive to Tampa down I4.
Islands of Adventure theme parks. Looks like your kids are old enough to enjoy that one.
Couple hr drive to St Augustine; take a dip in the fountain of youth and knock some years off.
Hit Daytona, drive on the beach like the early days of NASCAR.
Drive down AIA along the coast.

loved driving up and down A1A when I lived in Florida.
Daytona Beach is a must. The glades are fun, but a long jump from Orlando, would skip that one.

Sounds like we need to add Daytona Beach. On the docket.

I hear there are some pretty amazing miniature golf places in Orlando - thinking that might be a fun thing to do after a day at the beach.. Any recommends?

The Kennedy space center is awesome!

If you're going to Disneyworld I recommend visiting all of the parks. Animal Kingdom and Epcot are both cool too.

I never spent enough time in Orlando to make a solid recommend. I lived near Ft. Lauderdale and spent a good bit of time in Miami, the Keys, and the glades.

only went as far as Orlando a few times.

We really considered it but I feel like we'd get all Disney'd out. We still may end up doing that but we only bought 2 day park passes.

    Airboat rides anywhere is cool

It'll hot and humid (which is a different element than Utah) so spend time at waterparks!

Your list looks good. I also recommend Daytona.

Stay away from the Corvette dealerships, I ended up getting reeled in like a sucker.

No problems here, I'm not a GM car guy, though I'm a fan of GMC and Chevy trucks. Next car I buy will be an old, beat up 4x4 that I can abuse a little.

It is an acquired taste for sure. After 18 months, the "fun" wore out on a car like that. I would never purchase another new one for sure.

My FIL is having his mid-life crisis and is currently trying to decide between the Corvette Z06 or a Porsche 911 Carrera.. I figure I'll just get on his good side and use his haha!

I jokingly mentioned being able to borrow and drive whatever he gets the other day and he surprised me by saying he didn't see a problem with that. His son, and my brother-in-law, just got a pretty nice WRX STI and after they let me drive (safely but very, very fast) that I was surprised he was so open to it. =]

I've had a few little fast cars, no real muscle cars unless you count a 79 LTD former cop car with a 351 Windsor in it.

I sold mine due to not being able to use it by 40%. Track days are fun as long as there is no side by side cornering. Insurance doesn't cover track days. It had to go when I thought it was ok to speed on the streets...excessively.

    It's not? News to me!

Seriously I have always wanted a motorcycle and this is what has held me back. I am a cast and aggressive driver - if the power is there I'll use it. Not quite ready to pancake myself yet.

Well not to break any rules of the site, I was not able to even come close to opening the car up even at track days (high plains raceway). Same reason I sold my 1000RR, if the power is there, I use it.

To be honest with you, I have been really happy with my Lexus IS350. Comfortable, 306HP, RWD, Traction control disabled it is a really fun car that can surprise people. I have heard 145mph is not a problem in this car...

Truth of the matter is that it would probably sit in the garage 99% of the time - he has a big Dodge (ugh) 2500 that sits there too. They usually use
Good advice! We just spent a few days in California too, one of the perks of my job is that if I have work to do in another state I can often bring the family along and transport/hotels are covered..

I usually just carry my small hiking backpack and act as the family water fountain. We walked over 12 miles one day just checking out La Brea, LA Art Museum, and the beach.. I like your idea of making people carry their own even better. =]

Depends on what you're really wanting to do. For kids, Anything Disney is always recommended, albeit hot and packed. Universal has the better rides and my personal favorite park.

The new water park just opened here as well (Volcano Bay). Avatar land in Animal Kingdom just opened and it's pretty awesome. If you drive over to Tampa.. Busch Gardens has good rides.

Part of the reason we're going in September is that it's the slowest month of the year.

We did Disneyland last August and it was a friggin' nightmare.

I would agree on going to universal or islands of adventure. The kids will have a great time.

Do you fish? there is great inshore fishing here as well. Tons of guides
