You can spend a lot of money and get a genuine Toyota SST...Or, you spend not so much money and order this:
    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078RJ2L2...&pd_rd_r=0d2eedb7-53eb-11e9-b6b9-cd59af5e4b95

If you buy the SST, I expect you'll be one up on virtually all Toyota dealers. :D

Actually, you were the one that mentioned a "genuine Toyota oil filter housing wrench". I'm pretty sure that Toyota has an SST (Special Service Tool) for removing the oil filter housing, but I don't need to know the part number for it. From my experience buying Toyota SSTs, I estimate it would probably cost $250 and not work any better than the Motivx.

When I looked, there were a couple dozen tools for Toyota oil filter housings on Amazon. Some are cast aluminum, some are forged aluminum, some are bent steel, all are made in China. Experience from Tundra forums has the cast ones breaking and rounding out the 3/8" drive, and the bent steel ones, well, bending.

The tool in the link I gave you is excellent...it is made of forged aluminum, and costs under $25. It has internal flats to engage the housing flutes and slots to engage the housing ears. No reports of them breaking. The link also included a drain valve and hose assembly to keep oil from running down your arm while removing the housing...if you don't mind the oil, then just buy the tool.

The one I posted is what Toyota service guys use. Very heavy duty. I’ve had others with the “teeth” and the first one broke in half and the other tore up the filter housing.

@zebian2 If you need MORE data for a totally comprehensive analysis, here is a related four page thread of user experience with several different types and manufacturers of Toyota oil filter housing tools:
    https://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/topics/3967067/1

It also includes the Toyota part number for the "genuine Toyota oil filter housing wrench (SST 09228-06501)" which appears to be made by Assenmacher. Google that number and a whole world of cheap Chinese crap shows up. Motivx is made in Taiwan, which usually implies higher quality with higher cost. I previously thought OTC supplied Toyota SST, but that relationship must have changed.

The main complaints for the Assenmacher version seems to be it has no slots to engage the housing ears (required by the OP), slips on the housing flutes, and is difficult to remove from the housing once the housing has been removed. Some of these problems are in the context of removing housings that have been over-tightened. If you torque it properly, almost any of those tools should work fine, maybe even those adjustable filter pliers from Harbor Freight (joking). ;)

    That’s a perfectly cut hole
Weld a small hinge and bolt on the other side and you’re set

Others have saved the cutout and made a hinged door, which looked nice. Think one guy used a baking cookie sheet for material and made a door. most were riveted.
    wasn't real worried abiut it.
Believe the RCI replacement plate has an access door.

Sounds like the Cap'n was blowing smoke up yer butt. BUT, if true, then the Service Manager should be little more like the Cap'n in "Cool Hand Luke"!

My point was this: If his technicians are being told to replace that plastic filter housing every time they change oil to avoid cracked housings, and they are not responsive to being told to not over-torque the housing, then they need to have their attitude adjusted, as in TERMINATED. One time use on that part simply because their technicians think the only wrench is an impact wrench is absolutely unacceptable.

Here's another "John" suggestion for you, but I'm sure you'll do what you want: Don't ever go back to that dealer. If they're over-torquing every plastic filter housing, a part clearly not designed for impact wrench installation, they're over-torquing everything else...your oil drain plug, your lug nuts, everything. When you start seeing the expense of shredded threads, then I think you'll get it.

The fact that you have a degree of worry regarding the dealer service should..................should...................should...............well, I've said it many time in many other threads.

Let's all just hope it works out for you with nothing but glowing reports of good and accurate service.

I agree for sure that if done properly the cap should not have to be replaced. I just noted what the dealer does. Yes shows the they don't know what their doing when it comes to tighting the canister cap !!

Obsolescence in design! Well, they couldn't actually do that so they opted for the next best thing. Consumable replacement parts. It sounds like something Raytheon has designed (long story there). Just go out and buy the aluminum housing and forget about cracking that plastic cup. It IS going to fail eventually, (even with the OEM SST) so just throw the $20 bucks at it and get it over with. I am still in the "Toyota care" cycle and I handed the aluminum housing to the Toyota techs and they agreed to just swap it out on the "periodic" oil change. I thought I would get a little blowback from them, but they just nodded and changed it. I glyptoll'ed the bolt heads on the skid plate to see if they actually changed it. They did. I had to do the same on my 2015 4Runner too.

Dealerships do not use their Master mechanics to do oil changes. Oil Changes are often performed by the fairly untrained, high turn over, or Porter types. Guessing too many vehicles to "Train" them on to do it correctly.
