Got home and new oil dumping on my driveway and pavers. Dealer said filter seal got pinched... Glad I noticed as I am leaving today for 300 mile drive to CO river...

I watched the post mortem in the repair bay as I would not let them do anything without seeing them do it.

Is this common? Never seen this in owning 2 over 10 years...

After a dealer oil change I always pop the hood and make sure the dipstick is in, oil cap is on tight and there is no oil spewing out.

Dealers aren’t the only ones. Years ago, the tech at Jiffy Lube cross threaded the drain plug on my truck. It was empty by the time I got home. The paid the bill to tear down and rebuilt the motor.

Several years ago I was left a very nice magnetic 10mm socket by the dealer. :D

I haven’t let anyone else change my oil after they did the same thing to me on my 4Runner.

They put the outer O-ring in the wrong spot on the filter housing. It’s not exactly an easy mistake to make. You have to miss the channel it’s supposed to go in. Then, you have to stretch the O-ring to get it past that channel. Then, you have to ignore the metal tab on your filter, which is there to line up perfectly with a vertical flange on the engine block so you don’t over torque the filter when you thread it back into place.

The tech who did it to me ignored all of the above, and when the filter wouldn’t meet up with the engine block the way it’s supposed to, he torqued it down so hard that the O-ring was smashed into a seal between the filter and the block. I drove it like that for a couple weeks. :eek2: Then it got cold overnight which caused the O-ring to shrink, and I walked out to a half a quart of oil on my driveway the next morning.

No one changes my oil without me watching everything they do. No fracking way I'm going to sit nonchalantly in the dealers waiting room, drinking freebie crap coffee, eating freebie crappy donuts, reading 3 year old women's health magazines rife with vegan recipes, and forced to watch CNN bullshit on the boob tube.

This kind of crap infuriates me. As someone who works as a flight paramedic I have no time for folks who screw up something simple like this.

Seal was pinched because they failed to install it properly on the filter cover.

Same happened to me on my LC100 a few years ago and when I took it in they said I needed to have the plug retapped and they wanted $150 to do it!

Never set a foot in that place again and I did a pretty decent business there installing electronics in the showroom up until then too.

They hire untrained children to do the work.

I realize not everyone can or wants to change their own oil and I respect that.
But, in my experience the “techs” at dealers and other lube joints are generally inbred imbeciles who could care less about your vehicle. I’ve had more issues than I could type.
Even the shop I was sending my wife because I trust them wrenched the oil canister on so tight I needed a cheater bar to get it off.
If you must, find a quality shop and only go there. And by all means watch what they are doing.
The person getting paid to change your oil didn’t even know how to replace the canister gasket. That’s all you need to know.

My favorite story I read somewhere on here is where the tech removed the fumoto valve to drain the oil then replaced it with a stock one. Epic.

After the dealer did my last free change I has to use a 2' cheater bar and my neighbor had to hold my legs. They also left one bolt out of skid plate and one other bolt was not OEM. I gave them a 0 on survey. They gave me new bolts and offered to replace filter cover.

Once I put a Fumoto valve on I never take it back to shop for an oil change.

This is very common at dealerships because its much more profitable for them to have the new/least qualified tech do the oil changes, while the top guys do the service/warranty work. My first few weeks at a new dealership I got all the crap jobs till I learned their product, even though I had come with experience from an independent shop. On one of my first few days there, I did 13 oil changes, not a happy camper, but that's the way it works unfortunately. :censored:

Funny story involving the dealer "technicians"... Many years ago my parents were taking a road trip to Texas to visit my brother. My Dad took their Camry to the dealership to get an oil change and tune up. Now mind you my Dad was in his 70's at the time so it's not like he wanted to check everything on the car himself. So my parents hit the road and get to Texas. My Dad told me on the phone the car "Smells like it's running rich, like a two stroke" aka burning oil. Well instead of checking anything at all during their two week road trip he got it home and decided to pop the hood. Sitting right there on top of the intake manifold was..... the oil cap.

He drove nearly around 2000 miles with the damn cap off! And the fact that it hadn't fallen off was something he was kinda proud of. He mentioned something along the lines of "That's how smooth a driver I am".

Us highschoolers back in the day knew how to do a good oil change. We could take 4 years of auto shop and metal shop. No video games back then. Different priorities.

Brought the Tundra home years ago after a 'free' oil change......thought I noticed a faint rattle coming from the underside.....most of the skid plate bolts were missing

There was one of our tundras.com members here who had that EXACT ^^ same story. It was many weeks and a couple thousand miles down the road. He popped the hood and found not only the cap not reinstalled (and I do believe it was somewhere there wedged into the top of the engine) but oil popcorn splashed all over the inside of the engine bay and underside of the hood. Was it a Christmas miracle that it didn't belch all 8 quarts out and run dry? Mmmm. Not sure. I think there's something like a small piece of sheetmetal just inside the oil fill port that is intended to do just that: keep oil from splashing back out the top of the valve cover when John Q. Idiot leaves the fill cap off. I could be totally wrong.
