Wix are good filters. I’ve used em on my BMWs.

Has anyone heard of using a thicker oil for these engines?

on my 19 Mustang ( I not comparing apples to apples) I have been using 0-w40, no issues now for about 30k miles tuned.

Are we able to use a thicker oil ? Not too fond of that 0-20. I think Toyota specs that oil for CAFE. Let’s face it these trucks are not the most fuel efficient.

Oil Changes. Just what I do.

Dropped oil and changed with OEM filter at approximately 500 miles-True tighter/better machining process-but you still have a lot of metal filings floating around.
Next change planned at 2500 Miles Oil/OEM Filter. Most Likely in next two weeks. Currently running Amsoil 0-20 Signature full synthetic.
At this point go to summer/fall interval that is approximately 5000 miles and works as weather is warm:)
Agree higher viscosity is the right path-and will explore more on this. Other fun ride running a Supercharged V8 and with recent updated tune at 775 Crank HP/680 WHP. This car calls for full synthetic 5-50 due to boost and associated added stress.

Just changed my oil at 900 miles with some Pennzoil Ultra Platinum/ OEM oil filter.

I love how Toyota set up the oil change process, simple yet very impress very clean not a drop on the subframe.
I run 0-40 Pennzoil Ultra Platinum Euro on my 19 Mustang, tuned for full E-85. The tune in the car even compensates for the E-85 fuel dilution. The car suggests an oil change at 3k. The process to change the oil for the Stangs can get a bit messy…

Interestingly a European company that sell armored Toyotas suggests 5w-30, dependent on weather.

They provide a graph illustration. Just throwing this out here. Further support that you may be able to use a thicker viscosity.

This company is based out of Germany.

    Evidently they armor Land Cruisers.

What are we trying to fix by using thicker viscosity oil?

For Ram Hemi engines, they got bad issues with lifters getting stuck and grinding through the camshaft at 60-100k miles. Very common issue for the past 10 years for hemi engines. So in my ex Ram world, we used high grade Redline oil with thicker viscosity hoping to "fix" the hemi engine design issue. Hint: I wouldn't be here if this strategy worked

But what are we fixing with the Tundra's brand new engine?

Yes they can. I have a five-corner brace underneath requiring me to deflect the oil stream down to avoid hitting the crosspiece. When this happens huge mess - ask me how I know. I average 3500 miles a year and change oil each spring. Running 94 Octane as have a station close to home.

We aren't trying to fix anything. The people here obsess about their oil and frequency of changes because Toyota recommended a 10,000 mile oil change.

We're trying to make our trucks last longer by circumventing nonsense government mandates. 0W20 is really really thin oil.

Turbo's have higher degree of blow bye adding acids to the oil. Big Rig Diesels best practice is idle for a minute on cold starts before driving and then end of run idle for five minutes circulating oil through filter removing the acids. They also go 50K-100K on full synthetic between changes due to this process.

What I do on cold starts is idle long enough for the engine to throttle down and then drive. No heavy acceleration until engine warms up. I've also observed in my last 4Runner and both Tundra's on cold start-operations that the water temp indicator shows at operating temperature-but your heat is still blowing cool air. Takes a few minutes more for the entire engine to actually warm up including the oil. Mu Mustang that is fully gauged shows this in detail

For Engine shut down-will sit about a minute allowing oil to circulate back through filter. My challenge and fortunate is I have a three mile each way work commute. This requires me to routinely especially in the winter drive a longer route home insuring complete warm-up. It also evaporates a lot of the moisture that builds up within the exhaust system.

This all might be my quirks - but I like working on my cars and keeping them squared away.

Changed break-in oil at 1k. Currently at approx 2700 miles. Will stick to a 5k or 6 month OCI. Currently running OEM filter and Mobil1 0W-20.

I work from home so truck is and will be very low mileage. Took me 17 years to hit 100k in my previous 4Runner (and there was a time with that vehicle that I actually commuted). Tundra use is short trips around town, occasional hour+ drives, and towing a travel trailer. So combine lots of short trips (possible fuel dilution of oil), towing a 7500# travel trailer, plus turbos which are notoriously hard on oil, and I'm very much interested in running 0W-30 or 5W-30 oil. I just don't personally believe that 0W-20 is providing the kind of protection necessary for a long drivetrain life under my particular conditions. I plan on keeping this truck for a very long time.

I fully agree with the 5k oil changes and 1k break-in oil change. 5-30 oil? Sure all up for it as long as I hear satisfying proof that it won't cause any issues in this new engine.

However, if this person's engine failed at 34k miles, it's not an oil issue as he did oil change at 30k miles. If our engines have a defect or a weakness, oil won't be able to "fix" it, and these brand new engine failures don't have anything to do with supporting a claim that 1. We need shorter oil change intervals or 2. 0-20 is too thin of an oil. Otherwise everyone's engines would fail at 34k miles.

Yes, maybe 5k oil changes and 5-30 thicker oil will help your engine feel newer and stronger at 200k miles, but I don't see how these recent engine failures support claim that we need better oil strategy.

If new engine failed, it was likely defective from the beginning or a user error.

1K break in then 5K there after. If we do a ton of high heat off roading on a trip I change it after we get home. An oil change is cheap!

Whatever this forum told me to do
at a certain age, oil changes qualify as exercise.

oil changes are therefore healthy for you.

do them often & you and your truck will be healthy.

5k or 10k oil changes? Imo, I’d change first oil earlier than toyota says at 10k because of new internal parts wearing in and leaving possible metal in oil. Once you change out first oil I’d do as required at 10k intervals. Since the 1970’s I have used this technique and only used Mobil 1 synthetic oils, never had any problems. Only additional advise if you’re a DIY person is to cycle these changes during warmer months if you can… GL

Interested to hear his. I’ve done 10k synthetic changes for a long time.

This is what the inside of my 140K 5.7 looks like. It’s not even turbo lol. I guess the P.O. didn’t change it at 5K intervals.

10K = lower cost of ownership for one of them JD power trophies.

My coworker has a ‘23 just rolled over 400 miles. Local dealer tagged as 5k mile OCI not 10k, but told him he’d be ok going 10k. They are servicing his every 5k and are performing the first at 1k without any questions.

    Yes, BUT...

The 5k service visits are included in first 2 year free maintenance plan anyway. But it does not include oil changes at 5k miles, only checkup and tire rotations.

The 2 years free maintenance plan includes 2 free oil changes. So all dealer did was use one of the free oil changes at 1k miles.
