The manual can be wrong, the stick is actually sitting in your oil pan and the most accurate way you could possibly check it. Not sure how you can misread low and high on a dipstick, its been pretty common practice since maybe the 1920s. The issue is when you have manufacturers eliminating dipsticks even like how our transmissions don't have one definitely makes checking the level more difficult, but i still do the check procedure after draining it rather than just putting in what I took out, so that I know its correct.

Here's how you check the oil on my 25 T, maybe we should go back to this method. :)

Im sure the service manual also tells you to check the dipstick when you're done but to each their own.
Lol yeah i think model A was probably first to have a dipstick maybe.

Your right, the 28 Model A was the first Ford to have a dipstick.

I checked my electronic version of the owner's manual as well as the service manual.

@Joe333x is correct. The service manual says check oil level. But it doesn't say anything else.

    The owner's manual says this.

    upload_2023-3-31_12-45-46.jpg

Note it says 3 (upper level) is excessive!

The owner's manual also says this:

    upload_2023-3-31_12-47-17.jpg

So all these years I've been missing an apparent important step!

However, the "high mark" on the dip stick is "excessive" according to the manual.

BEYOND the high mark is excessive. Between the low and high is “normal”.

Interesting, never heard the top mark as being considered excessive, pretty much any shop even fills to the top mark. Were talking about a half a quart difference though so Im sure in the end its not going to make any difference between doing 8 or 8.5

To @KNABORES point, the diagram does indicate higher than the line is excessive.

Just changed my oil and filter today. Was just about 8.5 quarts to the top mark. This was adding about 8 quarts and taking a ride. I then re checked the level. It took just about a half quart to top off.
