I only have 3,800 miles. Changed it at 2,000 with Pennzoil Ultra Platinum and haven’t lost/burned a drop. I didn’t notice any loss in the first 2,000 either. I had a Subaru that burned oil from day 1, so I know how frustrating it can be. So far, not a hint of oil consumption with my 3UR-FR.

Mine never lost any oil. Then at 150k miles or so I went to the Mobile 1 high mileage, now it seems to consume about 1/2qt or so every 5k miles. I might change back to normal mobile 1. We’ll see.

My 2017 says 7.9 quarts for oil and filter change. It takes 8.4 quarts to get it to the top line. If anyone is using the top line as their point of reference. I've now done 8 engine oil changes and can you indubitably that's what she takes. My oil level has never changed after an oil change in the 80,000 miles she has gone.

The oil level drops considerably when the engine is running. Both my bikes have a sight glass, and the oil level drops completely out of sight when they're idling.

If the oil level is fine with cold oil, it's gonna be fine with hot oil. It may be a bit higher on the stick because of expansion, but if there's enough it it cold, there will still be enough in it hot.

To gauge oil consumption (the subject of this thread) my main concern is repeatability. I check my vehicles sitting in the same place with cold oil after they've not been run for quite a while and can easily see if the level on the stick drops. I doubt it matters much how it's done, but that's why I wondered if JEHTUNDRA was comparing apples to apples in the opening post.

Just for fun, (I'm easily amused ;) ) I checked my oil this morning cold. My wife is gone in the truck now, and when she gets back, I'm going to let it sit for 5 minutes and check it again. It'll be interesting to see how much it changes.

I would bet most check it cold after a drain and fill anyway. I have never done an oil change on anything and run it 5 minutes before checking the level.

I run it long enough to fill the filter and check for leaks. Then I let it sit level while I take care of the old oil and put stuff away before checking. It's way more than five minutes.

Have owned my truck from 104k miles and it has 148k on it now. I run 10k oil change intervals w/full synthetic Schaeffers. It looses about .5-1qt p/5k miles consistently. Honestly, it was loosing more like 1.5 when running Mobil1, as that oil seems to have a higher evaporation than others (Project Farm). I'd say your loss is completely normal and no worries. As long as you're within your hash marks on the dipstick, you're good. I'm anal too and try to keep my oil a the top of the dipstick as well. If I forget to check it...then I know I have PLENTY of reserve till its too low to worry.

What does the owner's manual say is the proper procedure for checking and verifying oil level?

Are your comparisons over the life of an oil change always completed under the same conditions?

Got into this pretty deep when I thought I had an issue. Long story short, I will now do 5000 mile oil changes only. Severe duty change interval. YMMV.

Damn, what kind of oil you using for a 5,000,000 interval?

Doesn't state specifics, but says oil consumption is normal.

    P.S.
Y'all don't want to see what my 07 Tacoma manual stated for oil consumption.

I would say some oil consumption is normal, but over a quart in 5000 miles is not.

OK. After my wife returned, I let the truck sit for 5 minutes or so and checked it. It was actually lower on the dipstick than it was when cold and sitting overnight -- not a lot, but some. That actually surprised me a little; I thought it'd drain back faster than that. The level is really hard to see in the photos, but I didn't doctor them any. The arrows point to the true level after pulling, wiping, then checking.

At any rate, I think we're all overthinking it. :)

    Too many, but not enough....
This makes sense, when the oil is hot, it means the engine was running recently, thus, the oil from all the nooks of the engine havent fully drained down yet. I would think cold would be the best indicator of true oil level.
