Interesting you mention this, I did a quick search on the forums and it seems I'm not crazy. I bought my 24 about 2 weeks ago (granted, it only has about 200 miles on it now) and noticed it's very inconsistent. Sometimes like you said, it'll snap your head back and it's hard to regulate from a stop with very bumpy roads for a smooth take-off, while others (usually rolling stops) I press the throttle and get nothing for a second. Like it's between 1st/2nd gear & can't decide? Almost feels like my old Jeep when the torque converter was going out, though I can't imagine that's the case with a new truck.

Is it just that it hasn't finished "learning" (having only 200 miles) or something else? I guess time will tell, but I was really thinking I was crazy noticing the inconsistencies.

I asked dealer to look at it during my last service. They said since it is worse cold, they can only look if I leave it overnight. They said they couldn't even check software versions.

I got it back, and it seemed better for a few days. Now it is coming back. So maybe there was a battery disconnect that flashed the TCM memory. No idea. Something changed and it is evolving for sure, so there may be some adaptation going on.

I'm pretty confident that the issue isn't completely solved yet, it does seem like once and I while I'll get some major delay, but nothing I can replicate right now. The only times its happened its been a cooler mornings and right in the first few minutes of a drive cycle.

After the update, I found the street in town with the most stop signs, like 1 every block, and tried "training" in my transmission. Initially it seemed to help, but if I don't keep doing it, then it goes right back to its old self. I would say the last update lowered the speed where it downshifts from 2 to 1 coming to a stop but I still naturally mastered finding this point during a rolling stop. It seems like it never fails to delay if there is a car coming and I need it to get up and move. Manually shifting it, and forcing it down to first still seems better, except then I forget to upshift as I drive.

2 of the 11 Logged complaints for 2024 at NHSTA seem to be for this issue. Probably a good idea to take a few minutes to log in over there and log this issue.

I took my truck in last week for the second time regarding the “lag” issue, which he documented as a “driveability issue”. Below is the transcript from the voicemail he left me when calling to come pick up my vehicle. Does anyone know what “parts” he may be referring to?

"Hello this is Gary calling from Toyota just wanna let you know we got your vehicle complete and ready for pick up unable to duplicate your compass issue today but there's actually a technical service Bulletin came out about your drivability issue and we got parts ordered for that once parts come in we will need your vehicle for two days technicians to find a day we could drop it off with us one morning and we get it back to the following afternoon to do this to Bulletin and we'll go from there so otherwise your vehicles to complete and ready for pick up we are here till six hopefully we'll see you before then and then when parts come in will call and reschedule get you back in for that drivability issue thanks and have a good day..."

Ask them for the TSB number then maybe we can figure out something.

I’ll try to contact them and ask. Frankly, I don’t have high confidence in this dealership, but it’s the closest one to my house. The others are several hours away.

I have a hunch they are preforming an older TSB that relates to bank2 running lean and due to a fuel Rail Pipe issue. "Poor Acceleration and/or MIL ON With DTC(s) P017400, P117B00, and/or P043000"

The TSB is really mushy about what poor acceleration is and the conditions where they code would not be set.

Was this TSB helpful in anyway with the problem, or were they just throwing parts at it?

I had the fuel rail TSB performed a month or two ago and it didn't help with throttle lag. Had the lag TSB performed on Saturday and it got rid of the issue completely.

What TSB is that? I’ve had a code once for bank 2.

I still have the lag and surge issue with my '23 Platinum, and it has almost gotten me into accidents when trying to get out into traffic. The local dealer checked and verified that the '22 TSB doesn't apply to my VIN (it was built after the fix was released). They test drove it on a couple of follow-on visits and said it's "normal operation". They told me I should call Toyota Corporate and tell them about the issue so they can open a case. Seems to me Toyota should probably know about the continued problem by now with all the complaints I've seen. I did go in for the previous recall (vehicle rolls when transmission is in park) and they did an update; didn't help the lag / surge at all.

    These were the good days...

    Throttle lag issues...
    Wind noise...
    Rear differential whine...

Now I just hope that my truck's engine won't blow up and I'll be VERY happy with my ride!

I wish Toyota would as much effort into these issues with as much effort as they put into monitoring for copyrighted materials. I don't think any dealer or tech department can help with this one it really takes someone that knows the ECU/TCU logic to figure out what bug(s) exists. The Newer TCU update that was pushed out with the recall did change some of the dynamics, but I've seen some really bad hesitation on a few occasions as well.

I think I discovered something with my lag... and maybe it is more a transmission thing.

Normally I back out of my driveway, shift into drive... and things get interesting. Nothing, nothing, big rev and a lurch. After things warm up, I'm good. Sometimes it is a little soft after a stop sign.
The other day I backed into a spot and the truck sat all day. So, when I went to leave, it was cold. I pulled out. No lurch or lag.
Yesterday I started to back out, stopped and shifted into drive with my foot on the brake. Big attempted lurch as the transmission engaged. After I finished backing out, it went into drive fine with no problems. It is just that first cold R -> D shift. If I do it before backing into traffic, things seem fine.

So, I think what I've been calling lag is more of an issue with initial shifting from reverse to drive on a cold start. That could be more transmission than throttle.

    Anyone else notice similar?

I would agree with this. I also notice a tiny bit harder shifting in the first few gears (0-25mph or so) when transmission is cold.

I only notice a lag after backing up then switching to drive. I don't know if its the same thing others are experiencing. Its more noticeable after backing down my driveway (which is slightly downhill).

AFe makes throttle boosters (think Pedal Monster or PC) for the 3rd gens. They also have CAIs.

    Check it out.

Ive had the Pedal Commander, BMS and Banks...none of them address the issue...they simply add additional throttle % after the lag is gone. I had the TSB performed and sold the Banks unit...no need for it, at least for me.
