When that person in traffic told you "GO FLY A KITE" that's not what they meant.

Good morning everyone. Super Bowl Sunday. Who's playing anyway?

Need some wisdom from you all. I was up at 2-4am this morning stewing on this until I passed out again.

Well it looks like my Mom is getting married and moving to Texas. Not sure how I feel about that.

    Situation:

-Her relationship with God is strong (or at least I thought) and is a big part of her life. He is Pagan or whatever. We will just say not religious.

-My Dad passed in Oct of 2021. He's gone and I'm good with my mom moving on. Seriously. She started talking to this guy about 6 months after his death and wanted to get physical and she would not until married. She broke it off. Fast forward to the last few months.

-He has been married three times before and has been through the wringer financially. He does not want to do a "licensed" marriage. My Mom is ok with just a ceremony before God. Texas is a common law state, so not sure how he thinks anything is "safe". If she does all the "common law" documents it is considered the same in Texas. Her SS should not change.

-I've heard her fiancée is a money spender. I have worked pretty hard to invest/preserve what my mom has financially that will take her all the way up until her passing.
My grandmother was very generous to the rather large family /legacy she left behind. My brother and I decided to use that rather large sum for our mother instead of what we want. It is still our money, but will use it for her best interests until she meets her maker. The sum is over 500k. Not a huge amount of money, but at 75 years old it should last her. We will never hand that over to her anyway, so this is not a concern. Some of you know our family is in crude oil and own mineral rights that do well.(see what I did there?). I will continue to take the financial hit and give/invest this additional funds for her. She's my mom and sacrificed a lot for us. That can range from 400-4000 per month. Average is 1200-1400 per month. Not a bad ante for my mom to add to her monthly finances.
My Mom lives very modest with absolutely no bills except 480.00 rent...which is unheard of in Colorado.
-What bothers me the most is she is being secretive about this whole relationship. I haven't even met this man...which I find is odd and insulting. Maybe I'm weird, but any girlfriend I had that got serious I always wanted to meet their parents/family to see what I was getting into. Call it recon. :D

Just venting, but I just don't have a good feeling about this for some reason.

Dude. My mom had also met a guy online and moved to WA to be with him. TL;DR he left her high and dry with hundreds of thousands in bad debt from a business venture he was running. Literally left her to deal with it on her own. Ran out on her. You have every right to be suspicious and do whatever you can to keep his hands off her money. She will do what she wants and there's nothing you can do about that, but you can mitigate the damage if you act before he gets the chance. Hell, maybe he has already gotten her to sign over whatever she can....

I see red flags galore. You know I don't care about the whole god thing, but the way you describe the guy just seems a bit off. Definitely keep an eye on her money and keep it in your name if possible. AZ is a community property state too, people don't fully understand what that means.

    Wow! That is nuts.

I have most of her money and she has no access to it. I'll give her ~50,000.00 to move down there to get her started off. The rest is staying right where it is.

I see the same red flags. I hate to be like this, but I learn from others experiences.

I do have faith, and just surprised about her. This just totally threw me off considering what she has preached to us all these years.

Good afternoon Chris. I would be irate at that situation, you can't trust anyone, too many gold diggers out there wanting to take advantage.

The weird thing is this happened to her own mother. Lonely, had some money saved up, married a spender. He drained her dry and then started physically/mentally abusing her. I had to drive up to ND and handle some business. They divorced shortly after.

No. It would cost her 200.00 in diesel. That money would be for her to manage for day to day expense's and future "rainy days".

I hear this stuff far too often. My wife deals with fraud for a bank and stuff like this is a daily occurrence. When you show the people that the are being used and the evidence is there they still won't believe it.
