20/20 hindsight thought. Now that I did this, think a solid low flow muffler/Resonator set-up would do the trick and have better tone and in 200-400 cost range.

No Dyno completed on the Tundra however same discussion couple years back on the 4runner forum. Someone added TRD CAI and Cat-back and completed before and after Dyno results. Don't quote me on exact numbers-but info is buried in the forum. There was measurable increase of torque in the higher RPM range above 3K. It came at a torque loss at lower RPM's. MPG remained the same. For me and just an ego boaster landed running Borla Sport Cat Back with Resonator in front of the muffler with TRD CAI.

I wanted a faster vehicle so I also bought a Chevy SS... because 4 door sedans with big V8’s are hilarious.
Giving up power under the curve at the RPM range you operate a truck engine in to gain power at higher RPM where you spend very little time seems like a poor trade off to me.

that would be a shame as one of the brightest spots of the new gen motor is torque peak at 2,400.

I liked it when I drove it, but the fake engine noise was really stupid.

No argument from my 4Runner experience. Again, no dyno on the Tundra- but doesn't feel like lost any low end torque-most likely due to HP/Torque differences between two engines and Tundra having substantially more of both and TT.

I am also tracking MPG manually (Gauge Reading lacks accuracy) and at just under 3K mileage, seeing consistent just over 17 MPG around town. It's going up-not sure if onset of summer blend fuel, warmer temps and break-in.

Agreed. I don’t like piped in sound on any vehicle.

I think the one guy figured out you can turn it off in tech stream, so I would ask the dealer to do that as part of the sale.

If im not going rumbling V8, etc, then I just want it nice and quiet which the 3rd gen I tested was very quiet except for the wind noise leak up by the windshield, lol.

No Clip. But here is my fun ride. Phase Two flash and upgraded cooling. 670 HP at the wheels. 6-Speed. A lot of work in the engine and the suspension. Roush 1.jpg

    Suspension work?

Psssshhhh…. You don’t need to be able to stop or go around corners! Back in the good old days real men ran around on bald ass bias ply tires under squishy suspensions with brakes made of wood! When you had to stop or go around a corner you simply crashed into something or careened off the road turning your car into a flaming death trap, and you liked it! You loved it!

In ignorance and arrogance of youth-that was all me. With age (I hope) came common sense and wisdom :) Seriously, the suspension is loaded more for handling that WOT launches. Its gets a big smile going when floating through various twisties on the backroads and yeah occasionally blasting down a C8 or some other fast car wannabe on a little roller.

Installed Vibrant Ultra Quiet Resonator in front of the Dirty Deeds yesterday taking the sound to exactly where I wanted it. Summing it up, eliminated the drone above 2K, Cold starts are very quiet. Overall, much smoother sound and tone. Probably best sound I've heard for a V6. I will try to upload clips later. Here are two pictures.

These trucks definitely need a resonator. I added a standard vibrant resonator and it got rid of the drone I was experiencing.

Agreed. I left the factory one in place and have a nice tone with ZERO drone. Just need to put a nice black exhaust tip on now!

Went to the Muffler Shop and I ordered a smaller muffler around 14 inches long. I'll replace that part and see how it sounds. If I don't like it, I can always remove the resonator or go back to stock! Next Friday, I'll know! Carven came out with a new video on Youtube. My setup will look a bit like them.

I might be in the minority, but I still haven't heard a single exhaust by anyone that sounds better than just deleting the OEM muffler all together and replacing with pipe. Normally on a na engine, this would sound like absolute trash. But it sounds really good on this turbo v6 engine IMO.

I think this Carven setup sounds great. But $500 for their $100 muffler, a couple feet of welded pipe, and one tip seems pretty steep...

Thinking about ordering the muffler myself and letting a local shop simply put it in place of the OEM muffler and let him add on a black tip. Probably looking at about $300-$350 in total.

I ended up doing something similar! Replaced the stock muffler with a 14 or 21 inch muffler and honestly, I think it's perfect now. I was towing the other day and it wasn't obnoxious at all.

I did exactly what you said about about a month or two ago. Carven TR ($100) with a 3' piece of stainless tubing/stainless hangers from Summit Racing ($75) and the cost of a case of beer ($25) for my brother to weld them in and I have the same sound as the Carven exhaust. If you want a pic/sound clip, they're earlier in this thread.

I must say, I've left the resonator on after a muffler shop installed a 14 inch long muffler right at the end of the truck and it has 0 drone even when pulling a big trailer. It's not the same sound as a V8 but what I love about adding an exhaust is that you know where you are in the powerband at all times. You can feel the truck more compare to stock. To me, it's worth the experience and it adds that extra fun when riding. If you want louder, take the resonator off.

I have studied these forums and searched online on all of the exhaust websites, and cannot find any performance data. Just video clips of louder exhaust.

Does anyone know what intake and exhaust setup increases air flow and performance the most. I have to believe that with the twin turbo set up, more free flowing exhaust exiting allows the turbos to spool easier and increase boosted air induction. I do not care at all about increasing the sound. In fact, I prefer a quieter cabin, certainly do not want any drone, but I recognize a louder exhaust note may be the result of the increased performance. I just want to chase the highest functioning exhaust, and hope to manage cabin drone. I do a lot of highway driving, and I cannot tolerate the drone for hours....

My #01 goal is to appropriately improve air flow through the motor, with the only intent to improve turbo spool and increased performance. #02 goal is to minimize unnecessary exhaust drone.

Does this exist, or is the factory set up the best currently available on the market?

    Thanks so much.

This sounds appealing... Do you know if this set up improves performance, or just sound?

Unfortunately I don't think there's any true cold air intakes on the market currently. I know there's a couple companies that have some for pre order but I don't believe they have any dyno numbers.

As for exhaust, I have the Carven full exhaust coming today, and have reached out to them about any dyno numbers. If you get under there and look, the factory exhaust is actually fairly large so I'm guessing cat back exhausts are going to have minimal gains, just my guess. I think the biggest area for untapped horsepower is tuning, but a better breathable intake will help for sure.

By full exhaust do you mean replacement catalytic converters too? Turbo back or cat back?
