    I believe you are right.

They know from 1st hand experience with the 2nd Gen that even with a superior product in nearly every metric they simply won’t be able to get enough full size truck buyers to switch from the big 3.

So now they will market to the mid size crowd who needs more room, and more lifestyle oriented vs. work oriented crowd.

I don’t blame them for it, and actually think it’s a smart play.

i am guessing you meant digress (to leave the main subject temporarily in speech or writing.' or simply deviate) instead of regress (return to a former or less developed state)

Alrighty internet friends, have a situation that I wanted some advice on.

I currently drive a 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited but have had my eyes on the 2022 Tundra for a while now for my first truck and have even had a deposit down at my local dealership since the first SNF ad in September. I've always wanted a hybrid at the least because gas mileage is important to me with how much I drive, and hopefully eyeing a TRD Pro if the price isn't over $65k. My plan was to daily the Jeep until March when I had to make the decision of Limited OR Hybrid vs Pro, and then sell/trade in the Jeep once that time rolled around. The Jeep is lifted on 35s and is an awful daily that was originally meant to be a beach buggy that stayed at my family's beach house for some fun rides in the summer, but I ended up selling my old BMW for a great price when the chip shortage was at it's peak and figured I would just daily the Jeep until Tundra 22.

Unfortunately I've had some issues with the Jeep recently and another big one happened this weekend driving home from Thanksgiving when it shit the bed and stalled out. Jeep is at the dealer today but it will probably cost me well over a grand after rental car fees and such (I suspect it's a throttle body issue but not 100% sure) and at this point I feel like there's a strong possibility more shit breaks before March gets here (and that's assuming there is no delay with the hybrids).

I have come to the conclusion that I should probably punt the Jeep out of my life and find a more reliable vehicle to hold me over in the meantime. I have a few options and wanted to get some opinions.

Option 1: Buy a used Gen 2.5 Tundra

Option 2: Stretch the Jeep out 1 more month or so and try to get a non-hybrid Gen 3 during Winter

Both options will PROBABLY wind up being traded in Spring/Summer 22 for a hybrid Gen 3, but I'm not ruling out the possibility that I fall in love with either one and just decide to keep it for a few years. I want to lose as little money possible from what my purchase price is in December to what my trade in value will be in April if I go with the upgrade route. Which one of these options do you guys (and gals) think does that the best?

Used Gen 2.5's with low mileage are somewhat hard to find right now and anything out there is close to what the new MSRP was, but the Gen 3 is going to be slightly more expensive and may be even harder to find at his point.

#3. Keep the Jeep til March.

Don't pay taxes on a new car twice in 6 months.

You’re right. I didn’t realize it got changed in my voice text. I have to reread these more before I hit send. I do it at work sometimes and Siri is throwing some swearwords in there sometimes now. I thought she wasn’t allowed to do that.

Option 2 will absolutely end up with the least amount of money lost if you can get a Gen 3 at MSRP. Then you have the option of waiting and seeing what real world head to head benefits the hybrid gives over the normal engine.

Option 1 is a non-starter for me given that you would be spending MSRP money on a used vehicle when the Gen 3 is a superior rig in every metric (reliability TBD).

It's at 102k miles and feels like something new breaks on it every month. Once it gets out of the shop this time I will probably be at ~$2.5k in repairs in the last 3 months alone. Plus, long distance driving has gone from one of my favorite things to an absolute pain in the ass. Just feels like I'm throwing money away and twiddling my thumbs right now and I hate it.

Completely agreed that Gen 3 is superior, but I feel like the option 1 is going to be the cheaper option for right now, and still hold it's value if I decided to trade it in the Spring. I'm worried that the Gen 3 market might be flooded with new inventory by then and I'll end up losing $5k+ in value just driving it off the lot.

Figure out the taxes your gonna pay on the temp and that's your up front loss. Add in what you think you will lose selling the temp, that's your total loss. Compare to what you think the Jeep repairs will be.

Whatever costs less is the winner.

I've toyed around looking at domestics, but none of them are attractive to me nor offer the reliability of Toyota which is high on my want list. Ram would be last on that list fwiw.

Id rather risk MAYBE losing $5K in depreciation than overpay $5K on a used inferior truck. (Inferior being a relative term)

But the inferior truck isn't going to lose $5k the second I drive it off the lot. It will probably be worth almost the exact same after I put a few thousand extra miles on it.

Fair assessment. I usually just lump in an additional $5k of taxes in my head on top of purchase price rather than realizing it would be double taxes if I turned around and traded in after 4 months.

You said yourself that 2nd Gen are close to new MSRP prices. You’ll either be overpaying $5k for a low mileage 2nd Gen, or lose $5k in depreciation on a 3rd gen.

New only loses $5K if market becomes flooded, which will also depreciate the used 2nd Gen market.

I’d rather risk the depreciation on a new truck.

No option to buy a new or used 2.5 gen and keep it for several years? That would be the most cost effective option.

New Gen 2.5 4WD is damn near impossible it seems like. But yes, keeping it for a few years would be an option. I'm worried about the poor gas mileage and overall lack of technology features, but I have driven one before and really enjoyed it. I do prefer Gen 3 however but may be best to wait. Have a lot of possible scenarios lol

Bro, that's only half the equation. Add in the loss of 4-6k in taxes. This is crazy talk or the rants of the rich to be seriously debating a move that would lose you around 10k to drive a temp vehicle less than 6 months. [In my humble opinion.]

    100% this ^

just keep the jeep until a new tundra this summer or fall. Even if it has another repair, your still ahead vs trading vehicles several times in a year.

unless of course money is no object, which it is since he's asking this.

It's more so an extended test drive. You spend your money how you wish and I will do the same. I'm aware of the potential losses, but I also haven't pigeon holed myself into a particular scenario.

Both options probably lose money in the end I'm aware, but if I'm going to go the temp route until Spring I might as well minimize those losses.

Jesus, you guys really pay that much in taxes on a new truck? We don’t have sales tax or anything like that here in Alaska.

Yes, if I had to pay $5-6k in taxes then it certainly would factor in.

    Sorry for the disconnect!

I was responding to @akmerle and quoted the post. I was arguing his logic about "loss".

But yeah man your right, you do you. I could care less. You posted, so I responded.

    Good luck

Also a solid option actually. May look into it but I've always owned and never leased. Feels like I'm committing a sin.

Maybe put a range of parameters on Craigslist or Autotrader???? Try for something in the $3-$5k range so you don't pay much tax/reg/insurance. Search for older 4Runners, GX460, RAV4, RX350, Tacoma, Ridgeline, Gen1 Tundra, Honda or Toyota minivan, etc. Should be a good selection and sell easily next summer.

Remember to subtract trade in value. So if the Jeep is worth $20k and you buy a used 2.5 gen for $50k, you will only pay tax on the $30k or roughly $2,100 in taxes.

Then when you trade in the 2.5 gen on a Pro, you will get credit for the trade in value of the 2.5 gen.

You probably would come out better buying then leasing if trading in over the next year or so......

You beat me to it. When I traded in my '13 F150 in 2020 for my Tundra, I ended up paying $1760, I think.
