    Past performance = Future expectations.

We all know what to expect from a Ford, that's why we bought a Toyota.

I agree with that sentiment in general and it definitely holds true when it comes to Tundras, 4Runners, Land Cruisers and 1st-2nd Gen Tacomas. However the 3rd gen Tacoma in particular has way too many short comings to overlook even if carries a more reliable name plate. Personally I'd rather have a first gen Tundra over a 3rd gen Tacoma. In fact I did just that and recently bought a 2006 DC Tundra with only 83k miles on it. It's similar in dimensions to a 3rd gen Taco DCLB and yet the cab is bigger & comfortable, better low end torque, usable 6.5' bed and better payload. Heck I even had electronic adjustable seats sometimes the Taco didn't get until 2020.

Exactly. Reliability over the short term means nothing.

It’s no surprise that Ford is claiming the best numbers. That’s what they do. I really really really wish Toyota had gone the direction of a full-size Hilux with the 3rd gen Tundra. The fact that they didn’t does not in any way mean I will be interested in a Ford.

The 3rd gen Tacoma's seems to be racking up pretty trouble free mileages for the most part, right on par with the gen 1 and 2. Some don't like the programming of the transmission, and some seem to not understand how to tow with a gas motor that you have to use RPM's and the shifter to get the most out of it, but there are not too many show stopping common reliability issues that are popping up on the majority of the trucks. They have a few quirks but not too many that are leaving a bunch of owners on the side of the road.

Even Ford admitted they made mistakes with the current ranger and were not very proud of their product and hope to fix it in the future.

Even on the owners forums, the biggest debates are over wheel color and tire size, Go to other vehicle forums and you usually can figure out the common issues on the first page because there are so many posts about it.

I was about to post the exact same. Yeah, there are some complaints about shifting, the Powerband, headroom, etc. . .but they aren't exactly falling apart on folks. . Pick any new tacoma and any new ranger and I feel pretty confident that 10 years from. Now, that taco will run better, be more reliable and have better resale. . .so :boink:

I have 2018 Tacoma trdor. Sure it's not like a first or second gen but it's still very sold truck. I've had no issues and I'm at 63k. This truck gets me ever where. I live in Colorado so I've done some wheeling up in the rockies. Yes, I did a tune. I understand why toyota choked the hell out of these 3.5 motors but with a tune it's alot better. Sold motor. Tranny could use more gears. I've had about 4 different gen rangers, I never had issues with them, but I've known many other's that have. I know many people that own ford's, chevy and dodge. Mostly complaints but they deal with it.
So, that article about the reliability going down on the 3rd gen tacomas is just that, an article. You can't believe everything you read. You have to take it with a grain of salt. The saying goes, take care of your vehicle it will do the same. Toyota has a reputation and they are also not perfect but they know something or two about building trucks. This is my 2 cents my opinion.
I'm looking forward to trading in my tacoma for a new tundra. My household needs more space and more towing. Anyways hope everyone gets the truck they want so we all can stop checking on here every 5 minutes to find something new. Haha.

Do you guys think the limited OR is worth $10k CAD over the original OR? It would be for the bigger screen, leather and multi terrain camera mostly I believe. Also Army Green in the limited vs Lunar Rock in the OR.

Apparently one of the big issues with the 3rd gen tacoma is a coolant line that goes behind the engine. It is very common for it to corrode and leak coolant. This requires the cab to be taken off to fix. The valve covers are plastic as well along with a lot of plastic fittings in the engine bay. I like the looks of the Tacoma but don't think it will be as reliable as the 2nd gen version.

We should get to see the financing rates on Friday when the build tool goes live. At $56,300 that’s at the upper limit of what I want to spend. $66,000 is in line though with what F-150 FX4s are listed for on lots. The rebates and financing rates can shave $100 off a domestic payment pretty quick though.
I don’t like the extra chrome on the limited version around the windows and door handles. The screen is too big IMO, I would love the pano roof and leather though. But for $10,000 I don’t think it’s worth it.

I would not call that issue any bigger than than any of the issues the Tundra has had or the other gen Tacomas over the years.

The 3rd Gen Tacoma is racking up trouble free miles in its short lift span with trucks at 200,300 and 400K already reported. There is one out west that tows at max capacity almost every day that is over 250K.

If you want to find issues you can find them, just like you can find issues on the Tundra but overall the 3rd Gen Tacoma has been going right along doing what Tacomas do....racking up miles on the roads and trails of America.

Which truck do you think is the most reliable mid size truck, if you don't think the Tacoma is reliable?

It's hard to say, there are lots of "most reliable lists" from JD Power to CR. I don't think Tacoma is at the top of any list in the past few years. In my opinion you need 7-10 years of a generation to have the luxury of hindsight to see what was more reliable. JD Power has the Frontier as their top pick followed by the Ridgeline then Tacoma for reliability in 2017 which is year 2 of gen 3 for taco. The closer you get to the end of a generation the better things get usually. There's a great YouTube channel called the Car Care Nut. A Toyota master tech from Chicago that does some great videos on Toyotas. He did a good series on the Tacoma which is worth a watch. He just finished one on the Land Cruiser where he touches on the differences between the Tundra and the LC200 despite the same engine. Anyway, he thinks the Tacoma is a great truck but points out it's issues. He does say the 4Runner is definitely more reliable than the taco.
If I had to buy a midsize truck tomorrow I would hesitate on the Tacoma where it's being made solely in Mexico now. Probably would pick the Ridgeline for longterm reliability right now.

:plane:i wanna focus on the positive at least just for a moment. Let the love juice, ambiance, and nimbus surrounding the Tundra flow

    :101010:

    - i love the new design
    - i love that they incorporated different metals like aluminum to make it lighter
    - i love the fenders how they flare out ever so gently
    - i love how they kept the interior open and roomy
    - i love how they improved the suspension to make the ride better
    - i love that they used a full boxed frame to increase the payload and tow ratings
    - i love that they finally incorporated more technology
    - i love the additional cameras not that I use them very much but again nice
    - i love that it is made in America :oldglory:

what do you love about the Tundra?

    Just my opinion on Quality.

Current daily is a 17 T4R TRD Pro (Have a Tundra Limited TRD OR ordered). Wifes ride is a 20 RAV4 TRD OR. My fun ride is a 19 Roush RS3. I've upgraded most of the RS3 Suspension components, cooling system, shifter, clutch, etc. I do most of the maintenance on all my cars-have been turning wrenches for a long time.

These cars are pulled from Flatrock to the Roush facility for a complete rework and upgrade before shipping. There is no comparison-between the quality of this car and the Toyota's. The Toyota's are head and shoulders above the RS3. From design in terms of maintenance, fit and finish. That said, the RS3 does exactly what its designed to do- it's faster than 95% of the so-called fast cars out there. Extremely fast, handles on rails and just fun to drive.

My take is there will be some issues with new year roll-out. Toyota will fix. The quality and longevity will be typical Toyota.

Surprised there wasn't a blender plugged in next to him on the tailgate with a bunch of fruits and veggies (pumpkins) loaded into the bed, ready to blend up a nutritious drink while listening to him sing.

Or the annoying no keys in the truck horn. But that can be turned off by anyone with forscan.

On a side note. The new GMC 2500 AT4X looks nice, but I regress.

Yeah that add was embarrassing and completely indicative of who is making and designing these trucks and who they are catered to.....

Now the truck might fall apart at 10k miles, but the old Chevrolet commercials with Bob Seger "Like a Rock" song playing while rough and tough ranchers beat the hell out of them, makes me want to buy one of those.

    Times are changing for sure.......

A commercial showing more of the Tundra’s heritage would have been better.

    • Show how two older 2nd gens went over a million miles often carrying loads over 1 ton.
    • Show how the trucks given to a ranch in Texas were beat to hell and just kept going.
    • Show a montage of all the 300k, 400k, 500k and higher mileage trucks still out on the road. It’s not hard to find those owners. Look through dealership service data.

THAT would sell a ton of trucks. But what do I know…

The acoustic pop on the tailgate sung by a guy who probably tours out of his Prius WILDLY undersells what the 3rd gen is capable of.

Reminds me of the finance guy when I got my Tacoma in 17, saw me walk in, and put something like maroon 5 on his pandora. People are just out of touch. Ended up asking him to just turn the music off if he didnt mind.

I couldn't watch the whole promo because it was so cringey. Hard to believe more than one person sat in a conference room and OK'd this (as in...watched the WHOLE three and a half minutes). Maybe it's me that's out of touch, though.

Has anyone come across real world pictures of the TRD Sport in Midnight black? It doesn’t seem like any review vehicles came in sport with black.

Agreed. It seems they have effectively moved to a subscription model. Trade it in every 3-5 years and make payments forever. “Something is wrong with your truck at 100k miles? Well, we can’t recreate the problem, but check out this new model. It has some really cool features. I’m sure it wouldn’t add much to your payment at all...”

I’m just glad at least one company focuses on long term service life and ease of self maintenance.

I feel like Toyota is trying to sell the Tundra as a lifestyle truck the same way they do a Tacoma. Instead of showing its capability & durability doing rough work, dirty jobs, at the construction site, towing the space shuttle etc etc they're showcasing it as a vehicle that can take you to all these instagram worthy views. In many respects I see this truck as simply a bigger Tacoma and I think their target demographic and survey group were likely 3rd gen Taco owners that now likely had a family and now needed a full size truck. I think they took too much input from Youtubers and IG influencers than real truck users.

It’s still a more capable, more sophisticated and better MPG truck than the 2nd Gen. Anyone that keeps up with trucks knows this. They don’t need to market the same audience to get their business. They are trying to reach a new audience and increase sales. Why do you think GM, Ford and Ram put all those gadgets on their trucks first? To reach a larger audience. Marketing is just that. Toyota did some nice things with this new tundra no doubt. In the future I’ll own one but happy I bought my 2021.

    I believe you are right.

They know from 1st hand experience with the 2nd Gen that even with a superior product in nearly every metric they simply won’t be able to get enough full size truck buyers to switch from the big 3.

So now they will market to the mid size crowd who needs more room, and more lifestyle oriented vs. work oriented crowd.

I don’t blame them for it, and actually think it’s a smart play.
