Official 2022 Tundra 3rd Gen Thread

Ouch! That is a long time sitting around. My build date (SR5 Crewmax 4x4) was Dec 16. Arrived Jan 7.

 

I hate to get impatient but it’s a month late. I understand Covid and shortage on employees but I keep seeing builds after mine and people already have their truck. Dealer don’t know why. It’s a bit annoying.

Cliff notes:

Tundra empty at 70 MPH cruise = 23.97 MPG.

Tundra towing 8100lbs at 70 MPH cruise = 12.4 MPG.

So I guess all the “turbo vee-sixes ain’t not gonna tow as guud as muh vee-eight and ain’t gonna get as good fuel effincincieseses while doing it!” guys can go pound sand.

 

I have a 4th build slip date now from 1/26, to 2/2, to 2/8 and as of today it's now 2/10.

Hopefully it's part 1/2 plant shut down and 1/2 get your supply chain waste gate shit together.

 

Sorry. You can add the cameras (which are quite nice) the hill descent and crawl assist (also a great add) and Bilstein shocks and lift it and add some bigger tires, but with those departure angles, 9" stock clearance, the weight and the bulk, it really still is a pavement princess. More suited for dirt road than off road. If you are serious about off-roading, there are a ton of better choices of vehicles. But they won't haul or tow.

Stop using logic!

Don’t you know that 1/2 ton and larger pickups are supposed to be capable of going on any trail? We’re supposed to buy a new 1/2 ton (or larger) truck and then dump another $20K into it in suspension, wheels, tires, bumpers, lights, winch, and other mods to make it the ultimate off road vehicle!

Never mind in reasonable times $20K buys you a decent used 2 axle flatbed trailer and a small 4X4 trail rig/toy to go play with. You then tow said trailer and 4X4 toy places with your stock comfy reliable 1/2 ton (or larger) truck that can also handle some light off road driving but does so much more day to day.

 

It's tough for people who only want one vehicle for whatever reason. A 4R is one of the best choices for off roading among new vehicles for sale in North America but only tows 5000 lbs. Full size pickup is best for towing and hauling but is too large to be great for off roading. Have to decide your priorities and buy the best vehicle(s) for your use case.

Interesting. The new Sequoia comes standard with the iForce Max (hybrid). The same engine as the hybrid Tundra. They're both now made in the same plant. They share the same frame. If it's true, it would be interesting to see if the Tundra also gets a more powerful engine. Maybe for the rumoured 'Trail Hunter'? Maybe they detuned the iForce Max like they did with the SR's iForce?

 

at 39:43 mark Sweers says "allows us to tow up to 9000lbs at this time" so even he hints it might go up. Maybe just a higher rating as testing continues? Maybe another engine? I'd be shocked if it was another powertrain as he's been keen on pointing out all the efficiencies of one powertrain and sharing everything with the Tundra

 

I have been lurking on this forum for a few months while contemplating a 22 Tundra as our next family vehicle (now Sequoia as well). I finally saw my first 22 in the flesh today (SR5 premium crew) and was able to take it for a test drive. I spent a minute sitting in a used 2018 Tundra while The sales guy hunted down a plate so I had an immediate back to back impression. I also had an F150 as a rental vehicle for a few days recently and test drove a Ram 1500 about 2 months ago. My immediate overwhelming impression was how much smaller the cab felt than those other trucks. Especially compared to the 18 Tundra. I didn’t necessarily see that as a bad thing though. It kind of felt like a plus sized Taco which I have been wanting for years. That impression continued on the drive as well. I felt like it drove much smaller than the Ram or F150. Interior is really sweet. The motor felt awesome, very smooth. Front visibility was a bit tank like but overall I loved it and congratulations to all of you who have taken delivery. This model was a 2 wheel drive which I guess explains why it hadn’t sold yet and the dealer had close to $10,000 in market adjustments added which cant be helping. If I can find a limited with the off-road package in the North East for MSRP (fat chance) I am hoping to pick one up this summer. That Sequoia is pretty damn sweet though...

And that is exactly why I traded the Rubicon at 3 years. Same fun without cost of the Jeep upkeep.

 

Toyota uses the SAE J2807 certification for trailer capacity. I think one of the limitations for Sequoia might be related to stability. Technically it could tow the same as the Tundra hybrid but I bet it’s much less stable due to the shorter wheelbase.

 

It was all I could figure when they let slip at the 29 min mark about a more beefy engine.

But a tune of the V6 to Landcruiser output could be what they were hinting at.

 

It would behoove Toyota to offer a factory tune, especially when it’s readily available like that. But I still think their limitation is not engine. They have plenty of engine to tow 11,000 lbs like the Tundra.

That’s more likely than diesel. Diesel engine certification in USA is a nightmare.

 

I would gleefully make them regret offering that.

I’d find a way to break the windshield once a month for a year.

 

I bought a repair package for $650 on my 2019 the dealership offered. It Covered the windshield, tires and body dent repair. If you ever had a flat tire they would replace the tire instead of patching it. I work in a construction field. So I got 4 brand new tires for my truck that were about $350 apiece (toyo AT2’s). I even had them rotate one as a spare. They also fixed a couple chips in my windshield. It’s paid for itself already

 

They're not offering a tire protection package they're FORCING on the customer a glass protection package for 900$ for 12 months. Something my insurance covers for 0 deductile. There's no justification for that other than outright thievery.

 

True. By itself it is a waste and sucks that dealers are trying to force this shit on people to make money.

 

With the amount of gravel that gets spread on our roads in winter, no one here is stupid enough to offer glass repair. Can't get it as an option from any insurance company.
