Hybrid batteries are heavy, which costs mpg. For the Jeep Wrangler hybrid, for example, most customers buy for extra torque (for climbing rocks), not for gas milage. For the manufacturer, it helps them meet emission and other standards irrespective of mpg.

Was asking about whether a 35” spare will fit under the truck in the spare location. Has anyone tried/seen it?

Off the top of my head, isn't the (non-hybrid) iForce 2WD 20mpg combined and the 4WD 19mpg combined? So, the iForce MAx (hybrid) would be just 1mpg more at 21mpg combined.

I wanted a faster vehicle so I also bought a Chevy SS... because 4 door sedans with big V8’s are hilarious.
    That’s freaking lame.

I'll wait for the official release but if rumors are true there's no value in the hybrid for my build of 4x4 platinum. Lower payload, lower tow and 2mpg difference.

I think the hybrid will have a couple mpg better in the city. But I’d rather have the hybrid for towing. I think it will be a beast at towing an 9000 lbs airstream or similar.

If you want to tow 9K travel trailers, buy a 3/4 ton. You will be far happier.

I agree. While not official, I’m just sharing the email I received from the sales manager at our Toyota dealership.

“Just a small update as we have received some basic training/information today. (Sorry no pricing shared with us)

We have learned today that the optimization of the Tundra Hybrid has not had the focus for fuel savings but primarily power gains.

The estimated value has been told to us to be 11.2 liters per hundred, vs gas being 12.2 liters per hundred. (combined)

The HP gains and Torque are what you will gain.

437hp and 583 torque vs gas which is at 389 hp and 479 torque.

We also learned the Hybrid will be available on the Limited grades and above, only in the Crewmax offering and include a first electric opening gas hatch.

The TRD Pro will remain as a very limited available unit, where the Capstone has been told to be a per order scenario. Given the climate however, assume low production availability on everything as we’ve been experiencing.”

    11.2L/100km is 21mpg

X2, at 9k the tongue weight you will have with that trailer you'll hardly have any payload left.

That is disappointing. All Toyota could achieve was 7 hp and 13lb-ft more than Ford, but 3mpg less efficient. Plus the Ford is faster, hauls more, tows more, and can double as a generator. Oh and costs less.

    LAME.

Not to mention the horrible wind load (though a small saving grace for it being an Airstream). Airstreams are light to begin with so to get up to 9K pounds, it's probably a mile long with triple axles too.

I assume those specs are a result of the Tundra weighing more than the Ford. I wonder what's so special that Toyota chose not to make it weigh less so they could match or exceed Ford's specs?

Or it could be that the Ford was just built and designed more efficient

It’s pretty clear Toyota has gone the cheapest route possible in development of the Tundra.

Tundra is an afterthought product that Toyota makes only because Toyota NA pestered them to. So they half ass it.

True. Or Toyota refused to compromise and designed it within their QDR specifications.

Until the low capacity battery under the back seat gets drained from pulling 9000 pounds up a grade like a beast

Maybe Toyota is trying to make up for 'tow hook gate'? LOL

Maybe, but it isn't a 'first' to Toyota's Lexus brand. My wife's RX350 has it.

The gas engine makes plenty of torque for high speed cruising and climbing grades. The battery won’t drain. What will be great is the extra acceleration from 100 extra lb-ft.

Meh, 3/4 ton is only useful for those who tow more frequently. Even my non-hybrid Tundra tows that weight effortlessly.

    Lol

Have you ever driven a parallel hybrid?
The electric motor is almost never used in cruising. I don’t know if the Tundra will have this but the Ford powerboost has a monitor showing what’s driving the wheels and usually it’s the gas engine. We saw from the TFL video with their 22 Tundra that max engine torque is not needed when climbing I70’s 6% grade.

EDIT: I understand what you’re trying to say but these powertrains have energy management software that tries to keep the hybrid battery at a consistent state of charge. So I doubt there will be many instances where the battery is completely depleted.

It's impossible to drain the hybrid assist battery. Yup

Except that this hybrid is set up differently than most if not all others by being between the engine and transmission if I understood it correctly.

Yep, Tundra hybrid is very different from THS like in the Prius but it’s not really a new system. Porsche came out with the same type of parallel hybrid system in the Cayenne in 2010. Electric motor was sandwiched between the engine and trans. There are quite a few cars with this type of tech, mostly German, and a few supercars too (Porsche 918, Mclaren P1, etc.).
