Never loose sight, the $$ for dealerships, certainly in Canada is in the repair shop not new car sales. They want you to bring it in to them for service.

Yep. The Camry of pickup trucks.

What you buy when you decide that a vehicle you don’t have to think about has a quality all its own, but that vehicle needs to be a truck.

The Camry has never been flashy, nor the best handling, certainly not the fastest. It’s always been well rounded, inoffensive, useful, easy to use, and reliable. No one is excited about a Toyota Camry aside from people buying their first good car they don’t have to worry about. So young working single moms would be pretty excited about a Camry because it legit solves a bunch of problems for them.

This new 2022 Tundra is tough for me to be excited about. It doesn’t do anything new or exciting. It’s not particularly quick, it’s not a standout in any one category. It’s competent at everything, but not the top finisher. If it were a boxer or MMA practitioner it’s the guy who wins on points and lasts the whole bout and has a reputation for boring fights. If past performance is any indication the truck will be durable and reliable.

Journalists don’t care about any of that stuff, at least not considering it a virtue. It’s boring, and they want to be entertained. They don’t own cars or trucks for 5+ years for testing so long term reliability is meaningless to them.

That doesn’t mean they’re wrong to point out the faults and the low points. Owning a Toyota Camry or the Camry of trucks is boring. Not everyone wants to be bored.

I would have strongly considered it if it had been available when I was looking. I may purchase one in a few years as I’ll be in a payment and it will be more justifiable in my mind. Or I’ll keep mine and pay it off and drive it forever like I did my last one. It’s fine the way it is. I would have been leery of the turbos. And this is why. Everyone saying that the turbo engine is going to be as reliable as the NA engines can’t do math. Adding parts and complexity adds areas for failure. And the parts have literally already failed. They will likely get the issue corrected, and the failures will be rare as is the Toyota way. A lot of people buying recently and still looking truly would have bought another truck If it had been a little better than what they bought. Better is in the eye of the beholder.

Personally, I would of bought this truck if it had been something more than what it is. Still might get the Sequoia depending (family needs), which is why I keep poking around in here.

As for bashing the truck, I don't think I have been recently? But in general, yes 2.5 buyers (myself included) have been less than kind to this new truck.

Edit: didn't see your comment about domestics. I agree completely.

I like the truck. Hell I like it a lot! Should I be excited about having to remove the cab to do engine repairs? Should I be excited about the one major engine update that has most people scared, is the thing that has already failed? I should not. I am not. Would I be more excited with an NA V8 option? Yes I would. Will I be more excited in 5 years when the Turbo 6 proves itself a reliable motor? Yes I will. Technology moves forward, albeit slowly in some areas for Toyota, and I get that. V8’s are going away and I get that. But I’m not excited.

The turbo replacement doesn't bother me. Its very low miles meaning a faulty part from production. Not a poorly designed part that failed prematurely.

Its also one of the first off the production line on a total redesign. Doesn't matter the manufacturer or how many miles they logged in R&D when you get mass production rolling there will be issues arise.
The 2nd gen had its own share of issues early on as well.
That's why you dont buy the first year, especially the first month's of a redesign.
The big difference is, I trust Toyota to make proper changes along the way to eliminate the weaknesses instead of throwing the same shit parts on them again and again. Cough cough, GM's lifters.
I'd also bet an engineer from Toyota put eyes on that truck and took the failed part home with him. My buddy had a 18' Tacoma that the clutch pedal started squeaking loud af. Dealer replaced the assembly, few weeks later it started again. They set an appointment for a Toyota engineer to come inspect the truck and assembly themselves. The engineer also brought a prototype pedal assembly to put on my buddy's truck.
If they'll do that for a Tacoma clutch imagine how hard they'll investigate a double digit mile turbo failure

If at some point in the future my truck suffers from the dreaded cam tower leak, not sure I’ll get it fixed right away. Maybe I will if it actually turns into an issue. The vast majority of cam tower “leaks” are just a little bit of visible oil wetness. It seems to do little more than bring the “I thought Toyotas were reliable “ incredulity out of people.

That was my thinking, too. If I can't smell it burning on the heat shield or see it dripping on the driveway and I don't have to add oil between changes, I'm just going to drive it. Some guys really like to freak out about it, though.

You may want to take some thorough measurements if you have anything for the bed or are buying anything for the bed that has close tolerances. I am sure the aftermarket will eventually compensate. It doesn't shock me too much...the composite beds have lets say...floating measurements all the time anyway.8EAC08C7-59C3-42E8-B15D-881B4631CD10.jpg

    A bunch
The domestic HD Diesel trucks are the perfect comparison for many issues people have with the Tundra. Are people worried about the turbos in those diesels - nope, are people worried about taking the cab off for work that's more than an oil change - nope again. Give it a couple years when production issues are ironed out and the Tundra concerns of the last 2 days will be history. How many here that are complaining about these issues would line up to buy an HD diesel if the DEF system was gone? I'd bet it would be quite a lot, and it would still have the same Turbo and cab off for repair concerns.

They will work it out but they better have a lot of engineers, there are a lot of these things parked because of it...

What’s y’all thoughts on the white platinum? Thinking of changing my color. That black tail gate trim doesn’t photograph well. Thinking of changing to mag gray. Just love that WCP so much though.

For the chrome-averse among us, white and silver seem the least offensive with whatever chrome may be on the truck.

My guess is the turbo supplier, not Toyota, is working hard to figure out this issue. Some said it’s just a bad lot of wastegate actuators. I wonder if LC300 has this same problem in global markets.

I’m going platinum as well, but chose black exterior. I’m hoping it all blends well, but I am still amazed at the number of different colors chosen for the exterior.

Well, they can't say much about reliability after driving the truck for an hour or two. That's why I like the Car and Driver long term tests, though even they only keep a vehicle for a year or two typically.

I am thinking MGM platinum CM 4x4. Wanted the Super Sonic Red but just looks bad with all the front end colors. Love the black but will never do it again. It's like a second job just to keep it clean. My wife's Highlander is the pearl white and really like it.

Yeah I just can’t do black again. Granted this is a bad angle and also I think the inserts ruin it I’m just not sold and think the black will blend better with gray
