I run alternate between 87+89 during the non-winter months. But i run 93 during the additive-rich shit gas months of winter. I disco'd the bat to reset the mpg readout, then drove for 6 months with 89+87 and average was 11.5mpg (confirmed with hand math calculations). Then I switched to 93 for the winter and saw the mpg's go up each tank until plateauing out at 12.3mpg. The truck does run better without a doubt on the high-test. However, not recommended by my dealer, stressing the truck is designed to run 87. WTF

All the lexus cars and trucks that have the 4.6 or 5.7 same motors require premium fuel only. I wonder if my wifes GX460 which requires premium can use 87?

You can use 87 but the GX is tuned/programed to run best with premium. Just like our Tundras are tuned to run best with 87.

So do you think Shrek is wrong at dap tuning that the tundra 5.7 L pulls 10-13 degrees of timing on 87? As well as 6-8 on 89 and 0-2 on 93?

It honestly does not make sense to me. Toyota puts millions into R&D for their vehicles to determine what should be the optimum operating parameters. If their manual says 87 is required, then 87 should be optimal. The other question we have to approach, though, is what conditions did Toyota test under to determine the parameters? Also, what conditions did DAP test under? Where these vehicles at sea level? At altitude? what was the barometric pressure at time of test? Etc.?

Not wrong . My comment was about factory tune/program to run on 87. Factory tune. Not custom tune. Huge difference....Most of us run on factory tune/program.
When you start adding long tube headers and BAM's.....whole new ball game with Bully Dog...

Our 5.7L can handle a lot more HP. It's detuned, for lack of better word, to meet CAFE standards most likely and for reliability. To last longer.

Yes, very confusing. I agree with Colorado TJ. Has more to do with compression ratios. If our 5.7s' would require premium like other vehicles then why not? Why 87? Freaking gas hog already..Not losing sleep over it that's for sure.

Food for thought....I think it would be great to maximize the tune. Now with the stock tune, let's say you run with 91 over the course of a year. You gain 1+ mpg doing so. How much more are you spending with the added cost of premium fuel to gain that 1+ mpg? Is it worth it?

OK. I was under the assumption that he meant the ecm may pull timing even on a stock tune.

I'm not too sure about anything. Heh heh.. I think the Bully Dog tune is permanent until you revert back to factory tune like DAP tune too? As long as I can buy Clear87 at Maverick I'm OK, otherwise I like Shell midgrade.

I’m using the bully dog and I really like the way the truck runs with it. If I did it all over I would think about trying the DAP tune but I would want the Remote version so that I can take it out easily.

I pretty much run 89. Locally the choices are E85, 87, 89 and 91 but the station I get gas at has 89 with no ethanol. After reading this thread though, I'm wondering if the 89 I'm running is mixed at the pump. I can say that the truck gets 4 to 5 tenths of a gallon better on 89 versus 87 but I'm not sure it's worth the extra .75 a gallon.

If the station your buying your 89 at also has 87 and 91, then the 89 is most likely mixed at the pump. However, this is not a certain for they can also supply pure 89.

I thought the manual says to use 93 which I believe is on the gas cap as well.

Problem on west coast is we have mandated ethanol with summer blend. My Toyota 86 knocked and pinged frequently. I contacted Toyota and CAL EPA and got no reply. That gas is garbage. And we only have 91 so 93 is out of the question.

Good points. Top Tier is an industry org that rates gas but only for fuel detergents. I wish they rated octane. Costco Visa card will get you about 3 or 4% off the pump price so I agree with your statement but I've used Chevron over Costco lately and it's much better than Costco. Vehicle stopped pinging and knocking for the most part.

I’m not sure why the requirement would be premium fuel? Compression ratio is 10.2:1. Now if it was 11.8:1 like my car, yeah, premium is required.

Here is a club Lexus thread all about it.

Compession ratios and octane requirements depends on so many factors. For the 3UR-FE , Even with fuel injection and well designed aluminum heads 10:1 CR DOES require higher octane. 40psi fuel pressure can only atomize the fuel to a certain extent, aluminum can only dissipate the heat to a certain extent. Modern engines have knock sensors and then ECU will pull timing once it senses pre ignition. 87 is fine for 99% of the time, and the ECU will protect the engine that last 1%.
Will it run better on higher octane? Probably. Will it run perfectly fine and reliably on 87? Yes.
Is the 1-2% increase in Hp worth the $0.50 per gallon extra? The owner has to decide.... if mine was stock, i would use 87 unless i am towing or offroad where every last once of performance is desired

I think we all need to look at this from a financial perspective. I agree 99% of the time 87 is fine. 93 will definitely give slightly better performance and mileage but the cost difference may not be worth it to most of us. If under severe load or during other high stress situations then 89 or 93 may be worth it. If you can afford it then go ahead and use it as it should not cause any problems. But in the end it will cost a small bit more per mile and that is a personal decision for us to make. I use 87 80% of the time but occasionally will use 89 or 93. Never had an issue with knocking but the 93 does run better by the way it feels and responds.

My manual states no lower than 87 but research octane was 91. Nowhere does it specifically say to use 87 just no lower than.

I run 87. It's my low grade here. Usually see 87, 89 and 91-93 for premium. Only two stores sell non-ethanol and it's the premium. I just make sure nothing more than 10% ethanol.
