    Too be expected.

381hp 5.7 liter V8, higher compression running on 87 octane.
    No cylinder deactivation.
    No direct fuel injection.
    Mechanical fan.
    Belt driven power steering.
    Low axle gearing.
    No front air dam.
    No active grille shutters.
    Heavy all steel body.

You're compromizing fuel economy for reliability. Just think about how much more you would be spending if you had to put premium or diesel fuel in it. And google how much a GM high pressure fuel pump or a Ford F150 electric power steering rack costs. Is it worth it for 18-21 mpg driving something else? Maybe consider buying a car to commute in like i do.

Check Edmunds. The Tundra is cheaper to own than any other full size because its resale value easily overcompensates for mpg cost. And that's based on semi-bogus EPA.

The Tundra 5.7 was at least as efficient as comparable trucks in 2007, but the competition changed and Tundra didn't. Fine with me. The 5.7 averages about 14.0 mpg on Fuelly, vs ~15.5-16.5 for other V8 1/2 tons. The Ford 3.5 EB is no better, but the new Tundra is near 17. The 2.7 EB is pretty great at >18.

Kinda wish Toyota had done minor reliable tweaks to the V8 and kept it, instead of turbo only. Probably could have gotten 16 mpg pretty easy with the new trans and body as well.

Not really; depends on the terrain. I probably ease along for 2/3 of my driving and drive it like I stole it the other 1/3, and I routinely get 15.5 - 16.5 where I live, and that's a mix of highway/interstate and city.

Of course, a 2.5" lift and slightly larger tires go on soon, and that'll lower it. lol

Next time you are at the pump with a GM, Dodge or Ford truck similar to yours ask what their REAL MPG is and you will see you are not doing so bad. Think how the 22 year plus Tundra guys feel with with the Turbo V6 getting the same MPG.

I got my Tundra to ditch my diesel which was getting 11mpg when diesel went above $3 CAD/L (over $8.22 USD/gal) here. About as close as it gets.
In all honesty I might've gone with an EcoBoost if I was that concerned, but I'll be towing a trailer a lot in the future so towing mpg won't differ drastically in comparison and reliability is bigger for me.

So far I'm averaging somewhere around 13mpg, but that's just three winter months of ownership.

That, and most people accelerate from a stop unnecessarily quickly. Accelerating is a massive consumer of fuel. In that case a TRD exhaust is a culprit to bad mpg. :p

A website that you can upload your real world MPG rather than using bogus EPA MPG numbers and see what other people are getting.

Most vehicles actually get pretty shitty mileage if you browse around on there. I used it last year shopping for hatchbacks that got actual 30+ mpg. There werent actually that many options surprisingly, only a handful.

He’s saying if you Google it, you can peruse the Fuelly site and check it out yourself. There’s also an element that comes into forums and likes to be spoonfed everything. Won’t use the search features, won’t just google the same thing forum members trying to be helpful end up googling. But that’s the way things go, some do the feeding, some just eat.

I don't keep up with Dodge, but i've had a 2011 F150 5.0 and my parents still own a 2014 5.0 and they do get low 20s on the highway consistently. They had a 2010 5.3 GMC and my brother had 2009 5.3 z71, and they both got high Teens/ low 20s. They were all bone stock though. My 2011 F150 regularly got 22 mpg on 60 mph highway trips, then I leveled it and slapped on 33s. Then I got the same MPG my tundra gets now. The big 3 have put a lot more effort into their trucks getting better mpg than toyota did with the gen 2 and 2.5, but Toyota kills them in reliability.

My FIL has a 2012 4.6 (solid motor) F150 extended cab. When I park my Tundra next to his, it is clear how much larger of a truck the Tundra is. On road trips at 65 to 70 mph (using cruise control) I have no issues getting 18 to 19 consistently depending on the terrain. A cousin of mine has a newer 5.0 Coyote F150 and he cannot break 19 mpg’s.

For the sake of conversation I would argue those older trucks got better MPG’s because they were smaller. And I really do believe Ford, Dodge, and GM mpg’s are bloated BUT I am not saying the Tundra’s is good. Just more accurate after talking to people I know with newer 1/2 tons.

I agree with you completely on getting realistic numbers, and you're correct every generation vehicles in general get larger and larger for some reason and it affects MPG. Full-size trucks and SUVs are massive compared to just 2 generations ago. The first gen Tundra was only slightly smaller than the other half tons of it's day and current midsized trucks are roughly the same size as it.

Edit- Bottom line is Tundras aren't as far off from the other guys as everyone make it out to be. If you really look at them the other brands mpg varies based on options you choose, and the Tundra you get what you get.

I agree with the trucks getting larger. Yet folks keep buying crew cabs with short little beds. Rarely do you see them hauling 5 full size adults. I would think an access cab with a full size bed would be more desirable to many. Sadly they have become expensive status symbols and left the work truck out to pasture.
All this is directly affecting mileage. Take a new Tacoma, beef up the GVW's and put a V8 with a manual and I would stand in that line.

Yep normal. Lock rpm at < 2k on highway and 17 is doable with no passengers.

I get like 22 mpg going down the mountains and 12 going up so I guess it averages to the sticker at 17 lol. Most I ever gotten on a normal highway drive was 18 on a cold day going 60 non stop for 250 miles

Not to be condescending here but how heavy is your right foot? What is ur enjoyable speed on the highway? I drive my first gen like a grandma. RPM’s never above 2k and 60-65 on hwy when possible and try to go to and from work before traffic.

I came here expecting sub 10 mpg. I avg 13.2 and medium footed on throttle. 14+ from 5.7 is decent lol.
