This is what kills me the most. It’s the hypocrisy of it all. When it comes to people in power it’s often times “rules for thee and not for me”.

Im not looking to die on the EV hill so I’ll just add that my argument was just “different strokes for different folks” there’s no need to hate on the new stuff. It reminds me of when fuel injection phased out carbs. There was so much crankiness for no good reason.

Most City and county noise ordinances are 10pm-6am. Enforcement is a city specific. Where I live...you will get a visit.

That HOA you are in is ridiculous. The only HOA I have ever been in could only increase the dues by .5% and it had to be voted on. We had our rental for 10 years and it was still 105.00 per month. That HOA staff was a bunch of crooks (realtors that lived in the complex) and almost had lawsuits filed on them. They were too busy spending money on lawyers putting liens on properties that were ridiculous instead of actually using the money for good. Once my wife took it over, within 3 years they had a new 50K dollar roof installed (warranty claim), decks and fences either replaced or power washed/treated, new landscaping company that was held accountable, and many other projects.

My maintenance superintendent at work had a hellboy HOA in his area. These are all .5-2 acre lots and homeowners just lost it. They shut down the HOA so people could build shops/garages. It took them 2 years to do it, but now he has a 30'x48' shop on his property that matches his house that looks amazing. He now can keep the very expensive 5th wheel inside and not have to store it at a premium price.

Some people just don't realize that the homeowners hold the power...you just need to get together as one and use it.

Our HOA requires something like a 75% majority vote of 80% of the homeowners to change a bylaw, which IMO is a good thing. There have been attempts but not even close to success. The problem I have seen is unequal treatment of rules and the enforcement (or lack of) provisions of HOA rules.

Usually people want the rules enforced they like and want to ignore the rules they don't like. Kinda like the forum COC :D

Well, eventually the day will come when EVs don't suck. Can't say the same for HOAs.

The great thing is no one is required to buy a home with an HOA.

Youtube video after youtube video of "Said 200 miles when I started and planned based on that, then suddenly went down to 160. Drove like I had a donut on to maximize regen. Made it to a charger only to find out it wasn't working. MAde it to another charger with 10% left. After letting it charge for an hour while I ate, read a book, watched grass grow, got back up to 35%. Was enough to make it the last 40 miles home doing 55, cheeks clenched with stress over whether I'd make it or need a tow." Or there's ones where they hook up thinking they'll be good to go only to come back and find out charge level hasn't budged for whatever reason.

My mechanic has a Platinum Lightning now, said he loves and just drove it to Florida. Didn't have time to get into the weeds of what went into planning a trip from FL to Pa. But he said he sprung for the big battery which is about 320 miles of range. Can be in the mid 200s in cold weather or lower when towing. I really wish I'd had the time to get the details of how he had to plan that trip. He's pretty successful and seems to be into a new luxo truck every 3-5 years so it's doubtful he'll have it long. For the most part he just cruises from his home 45 minutes out to his shop then it sits in front all day til it's time to go home.

Get me a consistent 300-plus miles per tank in the worst of conditions and I might get a little interested. For me to really be sold I gotta be able to go from nearly empty to full in the time it takes me to go into the service station and buy a bag of chips. Not interested in planning a series of 45-plus minute stops into a road trip. That adds up if you're going 1000-plus miles.

I don't get the hate for EVs. Don't want one, don't buy one. They don't work for me, particularly as a truck, yet. The technology seems to be making huge advances though.

One big concern for me that's rarely mentioned is the range depletion or deterioration currently estimated at about 3-5% per year depending on you climate. So if you're in a hot climate, after 5 years your range could decline by 20% it seems.

I do not hate EVs, but rather the push for EVs coupled with the push towards a power grid that cannot handle our needs now let alone with EVs added on. This is my problem. I would be all about it if we had a free un constrained energy market with EVs on the table as one more option in the car market.

Say what you will about HOAs, but if you read the rules ahead of time and know what you're getting into they can be a big help. I was never a fan, but have seen the best and worst of both sides.
The worst: Our previous house, no HOA/CCRs in a nice quiet neighborhood in a resort town. Guy one street over comes in and builds a three story monstrosity, claims its so his large three-generation family can all come visit them at once. In reality, he's never lived there, instead it's been a ten bedroom (plus bunk room) short term rental that sleeps close to 40 people and in its early days seemed like it was hosting a frat party every weekend. The city stepped in and got some of it toned down, but it's still way out of character and a problem for the neighborhood.
The good: Our new neighborhood with HOA/CCRs: no short term rentals or ADU's keeps things quieter. Yes, like the OP story, vehicles, RVs, etc need to have garage space (which was a great excuse for a 36x36 workshop). Then a neighbor decided he wanted to start an ammunition manufacturing business in his outbuilding. The HOA Board had something to say about that.

The issue has nothing to do with what kind of truck the man has. The title of the article specifies Rivian as bait. The issue is that the man bought a house with an HOA and either didn't read the rules of chose to ignore them. The simple solution would be for him to clear out one bay of his garage and park his truck inside at night. If this goes far enough to end up in court I would expect the judge to say the same thing.

    Meanwhile in 1920….

My neighbor just bought one of those new fancy gasoline powered cars. I can’t believe he’s driving around with a tank full of flammable liquid in his car that can explode at any time if he lights up his tobacco pipe. He tried to go visit his uncle out in the country and spent an entire day looking at maps and trying to figure out a route going from gas station to gas station. He didn’t realize with more gear in the car he couldn’t drive as far as he normally did on a full tank of gasoline. So he kept running out of gas and had to ask local farmers to pull his car to the nearest gas station with their horses. Some were 3 towns away. If he needs horses to pull his car anyways, why doesn’t he just ride his covered wagon? So ridiculous. My trusty steam powered car never has any problems running out of water. Because all I have to do is drive to the nearest river or lake to fill the tank. One time, during the summer, the river was dry and I even got home by peeing into the tank. Yes, pee is mostly water and it works great. Try that with your fancy gasoline car.

The US isn’t ready for gasoline powered cars. The infrastructure just isn’t there. There would have to be a gas station in every town in America for it to work. That will never happen. And where are we going to get all this gasoline from? There isn’t enough oil in this world to produce that much gas if everyone replaced their horses and steam powered cars with gas cars. And how are we going to get the gasoline to all these gas stations? Big gasoline trucks running on gasoline that’ll use half the gasoline it’s carrying just to get to the gasoline stations? So ridiculous.

I don’t hate gasoline powered cars but I just don’t think it’ll work. Why do you think trains are steam powered and not gasoline powered? Because steam power is superior in almost every way. I think I’ll just stick with my trusty steam powered car and let the idiots be the guinea pigs with the fancy gasoline cars.

People want to move into HOA neighborhoods because they look good and are well maintained with above average property values. Then they want to complain about the rules after buy. Basic human nature.

They are going 55 mph because they want to, not because a Prius can't go 103-112mph depending on year.

I think my gripe on HOA's and parking is, if I have a budget and I buy a good sized lot, but the setbacks, red tape, surveyor needs for property boundaries, and permits all make it nearly impossible to build on the sides and back, but I also can't park on the street, what am I supposed to do? I'm stuck with 3 vehicles in the driveway (could be 15 degree slope, maybe even steeper) and one on the grass on the side b/c I'm just sort of forced to do it that way. I'm sure the city just expects me to stuff them in the garage but I'm not even sure the DCSB and FGT will fit lengthwise, it's a tight OG garage built in 1980.

I think our city even has restrictions on driveway width, we might be grandfathered in or maybe just in violation since construction and there's no actual enforcement outside of new permits.

I get wanting a clean curb look, I want that too, but I don't really understand why a 25' setback is needed if the alternative is vehicles parked in the driveway or why a 10' side setback is needed if it's OK to park inside that setback. Wouldn't it be fairly straightforward to have different setbacks for vehicle-only type space? Wouldn't that look better overall? I guess it's just impossible to actually regulate/enforce the "vehicle only" type of use.

I'd be happy enough with a carport but I think even those are considered permanent structures.

HOA's are there for interpretation only..

You don't like the rules, seek to change them OR even better , ask to do something different.. I have parked loaded tractor trailers, dump trucks

with equipment on trailers and /or washed said units in my driveways while LIVING in HOA's..and not had the wrath of "Karen's" fall down upon me o_O

Bad neighbors are not just reserved for HOA's... they just have nothing better to do than "Bitch about" what they DON'T have....:fistbump:

Full Alarm called out for a house fire by a neighbor while your melting ice out of the back of your 10-Wheeler dump ( New Englanders use heated

bodies :D ) and the truck is not there when they arrive because you went to fuel it..

Well, to be fair, the 1920 dude didn't already currently have another vehicle, based on another technology, that traveled farther without refueling, was just as comfortable, transported as much cargo, etc. And just an FYI, steam locomotion requires a combustible to generate heat in addition to water. And most ironically, that combustible is still being used to power the newest technology over 100 years later.

The urgency of this technological transition is driven primarily by one thing and that's OK. Funny post and I appreciate the satire but not really apples to apples.

Personally, I'll have to give up my keys (or starter button) probably within 20 years or so and I'm counting on self driving cars and EVs making huge advances in the next decade and I'm confidant it will.

Our boy Gordon is being a little silly. He's lived there for 28 years and was "unaware of the rule before purchasing his truck." Yeah right. If you'll lie once, you'll twice. That Rivian will absolutely fit in the garage. Weston Hills are multimillion dollar homes. Gordon's not an idiot, but he's acting like one.

If I won even half a million dollars I would immediately buy an old RV and show up at my brothers house in his fancy HOA 1000 miles down the road from me (and fly back of course).

I hate HOAs and don't want to live in one, but I do have a couple of neighbors who don't maintain their yards very well - one of them has literally 5 shitty trucks always parked on the street, the sidewalk, his lawn.. fortunately he's down the street quite a bit.

I do see where an HOA could be beneficial, but I've heard horror stories from friends and families who live in them, or just the most ridiculous policies that seem to benefit no one but are strictly enforced.
