Avalanche, Wilderness First Aid, Canyoneering Fundamentals... It involves me teaching people who don't understand what sticks are how to not die when they are outside. :rofl:And sometimes teaching rescue to local fire/search and rescue.

My favorite part is getting to the top. Putting your arms down to your side and having them feel like you just dipped them in a pool of nuclear waste. :bananadead:

I think I would love Utah. One of these days man, one of these days. I got a question for you though. Why don't ice picks have a wrap around handle?

    images.jpg

Every one I've ever seen just has a straight handle. Doesn't that make you have to grip it really hard... especially with gloves on?

    stock-vector-ice-pick-axe-for-climbing-mountain-tourism-in-flat-style-485805262.jpg
This is the closest I've seen to a wrap around handle... Something like this would take so much pressure off your forearms.

I've never really thought about it. My guess would be safety however... When you're wearing a good pair of gloves, winter gear, etc - the last thing you would want is getting snagged. Plus, it creates a spot for your line to get snagged and possibly penetrated. With a good pair of crampons, you shouldn't have any issues putting your forearms down for a moment.

I bet newbies who climb an ice wall like the pic above, their forearms are completely shot by the time the reach the top. Purely from having to grip it so hard. I don't think their forearms would even be sore if the handle wrapped around their hand. It's sort of like a machete. Swinging one for an hour will kill your forearms and a few times it'll slip out your hand and go flying. With a wrap around handle on a machete you can swing it all day long. Anyways, try it with duct tape one of these days and let me know if it makes a big difference.

haha Well... your forearms are sore no matter what. However they do make a little wrap thing to help take weight off your hands. [IMG]

See the loop attached to it? They make longer ones that effectively go on above your elbows. But yeah, they don't curve the handles for safety. I texted my buddy who works for Black diamond and he says there is multiple reasons why they dont do it. 1) for the reasons I listed above. 2) because when your arms ARE starting to get fatigued, curved handles can cause inaccurate placement. 3) they aren't as rigid 4) manufacturing costs.

And then he said this axe is their best sellers because it has a finger slip for better grip.

However, I use a Petzl Summit-

And he also just shot me a link to the Grivel Tech - apparently a newer axe that has a more ergo fit.

So I guess I don't really know the reason? haha I just prefer the oldschool straight handles. :notsure: It's what I grew up on! :cookiemonster:

I'd venture to guess that's how it is with most guys on this forum.

Or go to Ouray, CO to get some decent ice climbing in.........[IMG]

I still have several sets of crampons, and some very decent ice axes. Grivel. Haven't done it for years. I've got some pics from Maroon Bells (south Bell) when I took two friends up in Oct 81. (no belay) I'll post if i can find them.
