I should go through the paint in my garage. Likely to free up half a shelving unit if I clean up that mess!

If it's on the clean side of the air filter, where is it getting the fumes?

It’s supposedly to capture fuel vapors or something - keep them from offgassing into the atmosphere. :notsure:

Speaking of off gassing, if you open the lids on those paint cans and let them dry/harden in place it’s not a hazmat thing anymore. Fully dry = fully inert.
It might take a few months though.

For latex, I concur drying out latex paint is the way they recommend and have done. Also near some paint store will recycle paint also, Sherrington Williams? I just recycled/ disposed of two boxes of old solvents, cleaners, used and old brake fluids etc at a mobile hazardous waste site on Friday our King County sponsors. Moving in a couple months, so getting rid of stuff rather than moving has been my life mode for months.

Yep. I’ve done that a few times. But this is a pile and I want them gone

looks like there’sa few places that will take some of them for resale - several cans we never used!

So, speaking of paint, I learned recently from a neighbor that the REAL reason lead based paint was outlawed is because it keeps surveillance equipment from scanning the interior of your home.
    Who knew…..

It’s valid with all paints and epoxies as long as all the active ingredients are mixed together. The downside of this, from an environmental perspective, is that you are releasing voc’s into the atmosphere.

Sounds like my kind of neighborhood. I don’t like boring…

Funny you all are talking about paint. I did a huge clean-out last summer. Took all the oil stuff to the haz-mat station. Tried to air dry the smaller nearly-empty cans. That took too long. Then gave the kids an giant, old tarp, some brushes and let them get their paint on. That “art” sat for a week air drying and still dripped wet paint all over the bed of my truck when I took it to the dump. Now I have two 5-gallon buckets and a few cans just moving around my garage until I find time to unload them somehow.

Down here, it’s free for county residents. Just gotta make the trip. Looks like most hardware and paint stores will take it too.

Holy crap. Thank you. I talked to two different shops around me and they just said to dry it out and throw away. No clue there was a store to take it.

After my last house flip, I had a bunch left. Nobody would take it so I used costco cat litter in cans about 1/4 or less full and filled them up and stirred. Hardened up pretty fast, especially compared to just letting it dry.

It's pretty disappointing how hard they make it to recycle, especially considering how much pressure we get to be "green". Once or twice a year they seem to have events where you can drop of things, but sometimes you can't wait that long to move it or you can't make it on that weekend. Seems to me that if they were really serious about it, there would be drop off areas at the Transfer Stations. I'd be happy to pay an extra fee if they provided that service.

It is easy around here for the normal stuff, but most gets dumped anyway since China doesn’t take it. Sad, embarrassing and pathetic. We normally have 2-3 haz-mat events per year but the ‘vid put a stop to them.

Our local pickup is done by Waste Management. They provide us with 2 green plastic containers; 1 for garbage, 1 for recycling. Sounds good so far, right?
Well, they won’t accept glass! How lame is that? Glass is one of the easiest things to reuse. It’s good for new bottles and jars, flooring, counter tops and more.
    So dumb

I swear removing that fart filter has a noticeable effect. Took a road home yesterday that has a steep hill and a 25mph speed limit. Normally I have to do close to 30mph to get the RPMs in a range to stop the up-shift-down-shift dance. Last night the truck pulled just fine at 25mph.

We shall see if it stays…the engine is probably still re-learning

Interesting, where exactly is the filter located?
