Today’s pubic service announcement: Okay Washingtonians. Do you have a plan for the new Long Term Care law going into effect Jan 1, 2022?

If you don’t know what I’m talking about, you’d better hit the Googles. Time is getting short if you want to opt out of the state sponsored program.

Yeah if your under 40 your screwed because the LTC insurance companies stopped selling to us. Unfortunately, this new state plan is not a good value for younger folks.

I already have life insurance with a disability rider but that doesn’t qualify for an exemption.

Let me know if you find something or write electeds and ask for exemption to include all life insurance disability riders.

Edit: I think a lot of people were gonna sign up for a few month to get the exemption and then cancel. But the insurance companies must have figured that out.

If you have a private plan you can opt out. Here’s the kicker, the private policy must be in effect by Nov 1, 2021. Yes, this November. With that policy, you can opt out between 10/1/21-12/2022. Yes, that overlap is weird. Any taxes deducted next year before you opt out are non-refundable. No policy in effect by Nov 1; you cannot opt out.

As the law is currently written, the opt out is one time forever. So what you do with your policy after you opt out doesn’t matter.

Some policies may be for 12 months and cheapest if paid in full. Still, the ROI on a private plan is likely worth it for anyone with more than 2-3 years left in their career. Your mileage may vary…

Yeah, this one-time opt out is nuts. Kids not working now won’t get the choice.

Yeah, it makes you scratch your head. These policies have been a failure in the open market. I have family that have them and they are dropping the policy at the next renewal because the premiums have increased so dramatically. There’s a business podcast on NPR that did an episode on these plans a few years ago. The industry severely underestimated the costs and got bit hard.

So WA is going to step into the breach with a mandate for nearly everyone. It is a true “hold my beer” situation.

As a FYI, I’ve gotten two quotes from the market. One is from my life insurance provider (I think it is a rider) and another from Allstate. If my two examples are representative of the market, the industry appears to be offering plans that are priced similar to the State program but with more benefits.

So I can pay “X” and either get the state plan ($36k max payout; not transferable out of state) or a plan well over $200k that is good anywhere within the US. To be fair, I haven’t dug into the “what’s covered or excluded” yet, but you get the gist.

My employer has partnered with a private firm that appears to offer plans that have comparable coverage to the state program but at significantly reduced costs. I don’t get more into until next week, so unsure of the nuances.

Yeah the state plan requires 3 impairments, whereas most private require 2, and life insurance riders (which pay you directly to spend how you like) often require one and give you access to much more than 36,000 bones.

Unfortunately, the state doesn’t recognize most riders as LTC insurance and therefore they won’t qualify for the exemption.

When I was growing up my parents had a weekend place there. Spent most of my summer weekends on the beach. It has changed dramatically.

When I was young, a ferry line at the top of the hill only occurred on the holiday weekends. Now it occurs on an average weekday.

Yep. Ferry wait used to be only long enough to get an ice cream from Ivar’s. Last few years it has been up the hill more often that not.

Dude, now you are talking! Back in my day it was an Icee slushy.

We like to take day trips to Whidbey. When we take the kids up there, an ice cream in the ferry line is a must. Gotta start those fun memories as early as possible!
