Ah of course yeah I’ve been doing research for about 3 days now still learning the “technical” talk. So far I’ve made a list of 15 different areas that say are 2wd friendly. Thank you for clearing that up for me I was this close to buying a sticker

Hi all been getting some mix comments on one trail. Has anyone tried Sierra Buttes Trail? Is it stock 2WD friendly? If not, what is my maximum distance before the hike up?

I remember it being a very narrow shelf with no where to pullout or turn around. When you decide when you're going to go, post on here and someone with 4WD might be free and tag along with you just in case.
The climb to the top of the lookout tower was a killer.

I am up for a re-run if anyone wants to go. Was running stock with out lift or sliders at the time, and tore my steps off. Not a difficult trail as far as I remember, just narrow.

I didn't want to throw you under the bus for ripping your step off, but it is a good lesson for anyone that wants to go offroad, steps are a liability on the trail. You had stock Pro suspension which is quite a bit different than what @raymond_hb is probably running. It would be great for you guys to hookup and run it together since you know what to look out for.

thanks for all the input. I’ve been looking for the basics right now like some sliders, air compressor, tow straps , etc. I’m thinking I’ll get rid of the OEM sides steps while I get some good sliders. I’ll be taking a short easy trail next month to Bodie Ghost Town back road just to get a feel of dirt riding because Sierra butte looks a bit intimidating with the height and narrowness I am not used to any of that. I’ll be keeping tabs on this forum and keep on adding on to the truck. Happy 4th of July everyone don’t get caught up in the sideshows haha

Edit: for the lift Bilstein 5100 enough or should I invest into something different?

I have wanted to run the Bodie Ghost Town trail for so long, but it is pretty far for a day trip and when we're on the eastern slope we always have something crazy going on. Have a good time.
Narrow shelf roads can be very intimidating.

It’s about a 4.5 hr drive from Oakland but I consider myself a one day trip pro lol. Out on the road early back home late but I am more than happy to update when I complete the run and send you a few photos might change your mind!

Do not go to Sierra Buttes if you’re scared of heights or have anxiety. Honestly, I don’t think it’s a good idea to go by yourself in a 2wd, full sized truck. It’s going to be pretty scary.

Absolutely agree with you I’ve been looking at videos of other drivers and those edges do not look welcoming. And yes I am pretty terrified of heights so Sierra buttes will have to wait until I’ve dipped my toes into riding out first.

No worries. I had just bought the truck and was itching to go off-road. It came with those awful steps. I found you off road guru’s on the thread and reached out, and Joon assured me i should be okay. So yes a very good lesson learned, steps are only good for malls. I had a blast though, and the steps were gone within a month.

Tearing steps off road is the best at to justify getting sliders. :D Joon is wise in the ways of matrimonial spending allocation rationale.

Same here, haven't managed to talk the fam into camping there, been trying for several years.
From what I've seen you could get there in a lowered Honda civic. I still wanna see elk on the beach though.

I’ve been thinking of buying one of these books looks helpful but has anyone found an updated one? Might be too early for one maybe but there’s been way too many fires and changes to areas I’m guessing a lot has changed

You're not wrong. A new edition would be best but even an old one can be very helpful, if only for ideas and planning.
