I would go with the 20, the new design that’s floating around is ridiculous. I wouldn’t chance it

I don’t think anyone knows what it will look like. That new design was a photoshop by motor1.com.

    https://www.motor1.com/news/392230/new-toyota-tundra-rendering/amp/

“Using the information we know about the upcoming Tundra and borrowing cues from other newer Toyota products like the RAV4 and the Highlander, we're able to visualize what we believe to be the upcoming Toyota Tundra (with some help from Photoshop).”

When the new Tundra drops, sounds like late 2021 as a 2022 model, I bet they won't automatically bring a Pro to the table the first year of the new run. I bet, best case scenario is you are looking at fall of 2022 for a Pro version of the new model...which would make it a 2023. Just my speculation.

there's not a chance the truck will get 30mpg, and most likely not 25. No one is gonna get 30mpg in a 6500 pound vehicle, gas or hybrid.

I don’t care about MPG. Mainly because I get a gas card from my job. If I had to pay that would be a different story. But I’d like a competitor for the raptor and new rebel RTX with the 700+hp hellcat engine.

My response to this would be, GET THE 2020 PRO. Then by the time the next generation rolls out and is put through it's paces, you might trade for it, or be SO glad you bought the 2020. And you would own the last of the big V8 PRO's. Just food for thought.

I wouldnt be surprised if the next Tundra model is a bit smaller than the current. If it's true that they're aiming to make a shared chassis with the Tacoma I'm not sure how it will remain as wide. Maybe with some creative body mounts, but I can't see that being good for weight distribution.

Sliders will get expensive if they start putting tundra bodies on taco frames ;)

I certainly hope they would NOT try using a Tacoma frame for the Tundra. I can't see that happening.

From my understanding it's a shared platform..not a shared chassis. It will still be a full size truck.

Is there a known difference for Toyotas approach? If it's how other cars did it, same chassis and different body. For example VW Golf/Jetta and Audi TT/A3 share a platform, all have the same chassis with different bodies.

It'll all depend on how much the electric part can do. I've seen 30 mpg on deleted diesels which are even heavier than that. And I'd put the new curb weight in the 5500 lb range, the extra weight of the batteries will be countered with lighter body panels. I've driven F150's and gotten 25 on the highway already, so these numbers don't seem outlandish to me.

Yeah but this is Toyota we're talking about..lol. I just don't see it. I think realistically, if they go turbo 6 cylinder, we might be looking at a best of 23. I still doubt they even get that high though.

One thing is for sure. If Toyota builds a purpose built TTV6 for the new Tundra, it will SCREAM. I hate to see the V8 go, but this is the world we live in today. Who knows, maybe they will even get a decent exhaust note out of it, unlike the Ford Raptor. Either way, it is what it is. Glad I have my 19 PRO.

Doubt it. The 4.6 isn't available for the 2020. Only engine available is 5.7 Can't see them putting the smaller engine back in.

Yes, there is a difference. All those examples you give are same size vehicles across the frames. They aren't using the same golf/jetta frame for the SUVs. The SUVs might share items with the cars, thus being the same platform to keep production costs down.
Toyota is going for a universal PLATFORM, not frame. The taco is a midsize and the Tundra is a full size, so the frame will be different. Don't be surprises to see lots of shared components, though.

For real???? I need to check out their site. I agree with you. If they have discontinued / no longer offer the 4.6, then there is a good chance they are retooling and that costs $$$$$$. No way they would go back. Maybe they'll just keep the 5.7 as the only V8 option. I can live with that.

I think if they were serious about competing with the Big 3, they'd offer 4 engines:

    1) 4.6L V8 base engine in low trims to keep costs down (comparable to GM 4.3 and Ford 3.3 NA)
    2) Twin turbo V6 as the go-to engine to compete against Ford 3.5EB, GM 5.3 and Ram 5.7
    3) Retuned version of the iForce, maybe with larger displacement and more power to compete with GM 6.2 and HO 3.5EB and for those who want to tow and work
    4) Small turbo i4 to compete with Ford and GM 2.7T i4s on fuel economy for city slickers

But they probably won't because they probably can't steal enough customers from the domestics to make that profitable.

No need to go that extensive - just go with 3 engines. 5.7, TTV6, and Hybrid. The TTV6 and Hybrid are the rumored engine choice that are going to happen, so all they have to do is keep the 5.7 from the current generation. I see no point in offering those 2 tiny engines, they're just there for fuel economy which is what the hybrid is for.

I agree, a hybrid would be better than a 2.7T. What would you put in the SR to keep costs down? 5.7?

Has Toyota in their history ever offered 3 engine choices in a single vehicle? I can't think of any.

5.7 - with no changes to what's been around for 13 years now. Sell it at a loss in the value trim since so few people buy them, make it up as an option in higher trims. Pretty sure there's a lot of people who would spend $1-2k or more for a NA V8 over the TTV6

Camary is one example. Hybrid, 3.5 L, 2.4 L. They do it with most of their cars if they offer a hybrid there’s always two other engine choices besides the hybrid. Just like the Corolla

I like that truck. Always liked the hilux. I’d consider getting a hilux if it was sold in the US.
