Just came back from WC Toyota dealership and got the news that my brand new Nitto Trail Grappler set of 33x12:50x18 are whats making my Tundras Traction control kick on at forward acceleration. Way too aggressive tire and the ECU is losing its mind unable to read an accurate tire speed combined. How the Facack is this even possible????

I wanted to share this with all my fellow members as I feel its important to share everything to keep us all in the loop. Cost me $130 to hear the $1,300 crushing blow. ZPC was done and there is no difference. Anyone else running the same tires? They said I need to go less aggressive. If thats the case Im going up to 35 and the hell with it and get a different brand.

Ruh Row......those seem to be one of the more popular tires.....or is it the ridge grapplers?

I say BS a far as Nitto Trail Graps being too aggressive. Seriously. My STT Pro M/Ts are aggressive and my previous Nitto Trail Grappler M/Ts were too and had zero issues. I'm just not buying it. No offense..you are just going by what the dealer is telling you. I hate NANNIES.....Many folks here have the same setup or even more aggressive than what you are running. Curious to see more responses on this...

I call BS also - Have run the Nitto Trail Grapplers and now the Cooper SST Pro in a 35 with no problems. Try doing the ZPC again - i had to do it like 5 times to get it to work. Did the paper clip method before I had access to the software.

I am running max psi whats reccommended. I own a boat shop and often need to go on customers properties to get their boats out. Being a 2WD I wanted more meat on the tires especially at the boat ramps. The only way I can hit that pedal with no issues and it run like a raped ape is double tapping the nannies every time I get in the truck.

I just got rid of my 275 70 18 Toyo at2s and were doing the same thing those were only 3 months old.....now I just went with Nitto Ridge grapplers 295 70 18 and have the exact same issue and might be a little worse now since they are bigger but what I have noticed and heard is that the 2nd Gen is known more for this issue

I wouldn’t run over 40 psi, probably 33-35 to be honest.

No F’in wonder you have no traction, you’re only using the center strip of tread at that pressure. 80psi is the MAX inflation pressure for that tire at rated load capacity. Your Tundra isn’t anywhere near that heavy, even overloaded.

Holy hell bud. I don’t even run that pressure in my 1 ton. 55-65 unless I’m towing HEAVY, then they get bumped up to 75-80 psi, but I have to be towing over 11k trailer weight or a pallet of concrete in the bed.

Haha I'm very curious to hear the results!! That's wayyy too much air in those tires. As far as what the dealership told you, I have never heard that issue be caused by those tires, and tons of people on here have run them!

Hope you can get this resolved with a ZPC otherwise...just double tap. You know....with all the boat towing and such...you just might be a prime candidate for an Auburn Gear limited slip.I want one myself.

    None, yet....
I wouldn’t say things like this when the Tech used factual data to prove a point. That right there is a technician with skills!

The Tech is right. You have a tire issue. Effectively, the wheel speed sensor is picking up a variation in acceleration when comparing all tires. This is EXACTLY what traction control is supposed to do!!

You can try the pressure to see if there is enough variation in them to expand one tire more than the other, but chances are you got tires from different lots and they may just be different sizes. This happens often, especially the bigger the tire, the more a 1-2mm diameter variation will have on overall size. This is seen by dragsters with big ass tires and they pick the side they want the car to point based on size. It’s also commonly seen on the 40”+ size tire size. Interco Tire, the ones who make the super swampers, Iroks, boggers, etc, are well known for having these issues.

Give the pressures a try, but if you still have issues, I would be calling Nitto to get them warrantied or replaced. At minimum check the tire born date to see if they are all from the same lot or different timing.

Nothing wrong with a second opinion. You gave some great advice. As far as factual data...yes. I deal with factual data every day in our lab. Data can only indicate performance/symptoms/anomalies, etc. Anyone can run a computer controlled analysis. It's how the data is correctly interpreted. That's why we have built in to our quality system a protocol where another tech or engineer takes a look. Sometimes three of four opinions if an particularly unusual problem which this appears to be since many of us here are running the same setup and even more aggresive setups with zero issues. This is only the 3rd time I've seen this brought up in 4 years here on this forum. I like your second opinion. Makes total sense. As far as the tech simply stating "go to a less aggressive tire" to solve the problem doesn't cut it with me. Hence my statement to try a different dealer/tech for another opinion. A skilled tech wouldn't say "get different tires..."

But why did the Tech run 80psi on an empty truck? He just looked at the data and said its a tire problem. Take it somewhere else cause that tech might be book smart but seems to lack other problem solving skills.
