Tundra 5.7L 2WD with FULL TOWING PKG - concern. Ready to buy 2017 to 2017 Tundra however need to be sure this truck can pull cross-country a travel Trailer approx 7500GVWR fully loaded. Looking for Tundra owner that has hauled suck a Travel Trlr. Appreciate any advise I can get before I buy Tundra. I'm long time owner of Toyota cars etc think they are the most reliable vehicles ....
Ready to buy Tundra 2015 to 2017 model CrewCab with 5.7L 2WD and must have full towing pkg. Looking to travel across country with a approx 7500lb GVWR Travel Trailer includes our personal effects in total.

I wanted to be sure that the TUNDRA would have no problem in towing such a trailer per my research Tundra with full tow pkg can pull up to 10,200lbs. I will install a weight distribution hitch as well.

I'd appreciate any knowledge and/or experience before I actually BUY a Tundra

    Thank You,
    JB1950

I have a 2018, 5.7, 4WD with the tow package. I tow a 20' trailer with my Camaro on it with no issues, don't even feel it behind me.

Payload and tow ratings for 5.7L with tow package will vary depending on model (CrewMax vs DC), bed length, drive config (4WD vs 2WD), gas tank size (38 or 26 gallon), and any other modifications that increase weight. A 5.7L Tundra should tow 7500 pounds with no trouble, but the 10200 pounds number sounds high for some Gen3 models.

Tow ratings for some 5.7L CM (short bed) with tow package, 4WD, and optional 38 gallon tank can be as low as 8800 pounds. Without the tow package, tow ratings on some 5.7L models can be as low as 7800 pounds, less for 4.6L models. If you find a Tundra you like, get the model number off the driver door jamb sticker, and we can verify the specific payload/tow ratings for you from owner manuals.

Welcome from the Texas Hill Country.

Welcome. I tow a 21’ inboard boat regularly. It has a combined weight of roughly 6,500lbs (boat is 4K dry weight, trailer approx 2k, and around 500lbs of gas/gear). My ‘13 DC 5.7 pulls it like a champ.

Smart move on the weight distribution hitch! You may, also, want to put some airbags in the rear of the Tundra which will help keep her level since you'll be towing near the max weight. We tow a 34-foot Ultra-Light Rockwood camper up/down our Colorado mountain passes the Tundra is a beast.

U mentioned that you have a Rockwood ultralite we plan on getting same but somewhat smaller about 26ft. I'm not sure I understand we plan on getting the Tundra CrewCab with 5.7L and full Tow Pkg and the air bags sound like a good idea as well. I'm curious why you mentioned we'll be towing near the max i've looked at spec's I was under the impression that full tow pkg we could tow approx 10,000 lbs - we believe we'll be no more than 8,000 lbs. Am I missing something?

Maybe you missed my post above? That's disappointing because I spent some time researching and composing that post for you. The "model-specific", "as-equipped" tow rating is what the owner manual says it is. Here it is again, read only the BOLD part below:

I believe the Path you take cross country will dictate much of the towing experience.

Personally I'd avoid grades above 5 degrees in elevations above 5K feet, but that's me....

Oh because we never just tow with an empty truck and and empty camper. Water, food, clothes, BBQ stuff, etc, all adds up pretty quick...it's not hard to have 2,000 pounds of additional stuff when it all comes down to it. 50 gallons of water weighs over 400 pounds. So if you know you have a lot of weight, don't fill up the water tank in the camper all the way...just enough for basic stuff while you're driving to your location. (Washing hands, flushing toilet)
