I'm installing the new AC system (compressor, condenser, lines, expansion and dryer) and just curious about how much oil is required to go into the system and if there's any special tricks that I should know that you all could tell me before I begin

Where'd you buy the aftermarket parts? I know you can't get an OEM dryer. Those are discontinued. Reason I ask is that I need some O-rings myself for it.

He’d be looking for bubbling in the sight glass when the AC is on. I can’t remember if that’s good or bad from what I recall. I think bad, like low on coolant or something. Have to look it up myself.

The bolts are crusty rust. I'm using penetration spray on everything. A few of the bolts just snapped off at the head... so on the survivors I'm having to dress them with the die. The bracket is really dirty too. Going to use this opportunity to try and clean this stuff up

The idler pulley looks like it needs some TLC. I'm going to remove it, clean and grease it up.

The timing belt still looks good, Silet.

FWI y'all: Silet is the previous owner of this truck. I invited him to the forum so he could see his old truck.

    IMG_20230525_201156.jpg

I'm tryin to decide if I should do the timing belt, cam seals, water pump and tensioner. I think the timing belt has 90k miles on it

If you're this far into it, you might as well do it. Get the water pump and thermostat with the idler pulley with belt kit. Having the AC compressor off will make it easy. The original water pump was weeping when I got to it at 169 k miles.

Timing belt maintenance cycle is 9yr/90k miles per Toyota. Is it necessary to do it under that cycle, assuming you used OEM? No. Plenty of people have gone longer. Just know if you choose non-OEM (i.e. not Toyota/Aisin/Denso brands) from a reputable source that isn't scamazon or fleabay, you may need to do it sooner. I've seen some belts look like hell after 30k miles.

Never buy replacement parts from scAmazon or fleaBay, whether auto, appliance, small engine, or otherwise. You will get counterfeits, possibly very authentic looking ones, but yeah. It's not a question of "IF" but "WHEN". Several people here have had it happen. And before you ask, yes, someone who ordered the Aisin kit, I believe on this very site, checked their belt ~20k later and it was cracked to shit. Ask @FirstGenVol about his fun spark plug experience.

If it were me, I'd cancel that order, and re-order from Summit Racing or Rock Auto. Guaranteed to be authentic. And Rock Auto does 5% discounts all day to offset shipping.

Ask yourself: What the hell is the point of replacing the timing belt, such a critical time-intensive piece, only to order from a place that's notorious for having counterfeiting issues?

EDIT: There are some times when you may want to order some replacement parts. Headlight housings, for example? But again, if the idea of getting a fake knock-off of what you actually ordered, while paying nearly full price for authentic doesn't sit right with you, you should avoid those two sources. And here lately, Walmart's website is having the same issues. Basically, if an online store allows 3rd parties to sell parts, you DO NOT want to buy parts there, because those are the places organized groups use to peddle counterfeits at near-MSRP pricing to make a fortune. And all of those storefronts claim they're "unable to do anything" about it.

My buddy swares by this silicon sealer for doing the valve covers. But it's a week out with shipping. Can I use a good permatex sealant instead or should I use the Toyota stuff for sure?

No, I'm sorry, it's not good. And here is why.

You do you, believe what you want, but what is outlined in that reply I just linked is what's been going on for a number of years. It's very well known, and many people have been bitten by it. It doesn't happen every day at every warehouse, but Amazon charges vendors extra to have dedicated storage, and the vast majority don't pay the extortion fees. And even then, someone on here that actually works in an Amazon warehouse told us, "A lot of times when things get returned to the bins, or doing reconciliation, the item gets tossed in the wrong bin, so there's still risk".

Lots of valve cover info (for V8, but some shared part numbers) here: https://www.tundras.com/threads/valve-covers-fix-or-leave.105385/#post-2712883

To that point, you can get Toyota's FIPG, ordered online, for pickup at your local dealership which probably has it in stock for pickup today, here: https://autoparts.toyota.com/products/product/fipg-oil-pan-0029500103

While MSRP says "$20", via the nat'l parts program Toyota runs you get a discount ordering online. My local dealership lets me buy it at $14 as long as I start the order through Toyota/com link I pasted, it's the same product you linked.

Oh - and if you want to see some of the recent purchases people have made on scAmazon and they got counterfeits - including counterfeit Denso parts - check these out, although this is just what I found in 5mins, with 10-15 minutes I could dig up a few dozen more:

The counterfeit spark plugs I got were from eBay but he's right about Amazon too. Unless you have a very skilled eye, you can't pick up on the fact that they aren't authentic. I would order from Rock Auto and avoid Amazon like the plague.
