Q: What did you do with the old rear end you swapped out of your truck? I'm looking for a pinion flange. If you still have it, can I bargain with you for it?

    Wha?

I kept the 3.90 chunk but don't think I want to take it all apart a perfectly good chunk just to rob one piece...
Very interested. Let us know how it turns out when you get it.

That looks normal to me. Will that part fit a v6? Looks like it's only for v8s.

According to the McGeorge link I posted above, yes it does, as in many years and models. If you go to that link and select “What it Fits”, you’d see it fits 98-22, V6 and 8, Sequoia and Tundra.

As for normal, there is no “normal” when it comes to our 1st Gens, speaking of fully warm at idle, IMHO. We’ve seen any where from almost at bottom line to quarter mark. At end of day it’s an idiot gauge.

sample pic starting at bottom of list….

Went to the yard in Bradenton yesterday an hour away to do some shopping on the 2003 and 2002 Tundras they had over there.
    IMG_20230714_123429.jpg

I found the back two pieces of trim moulding I was missing on the bed and a nice new air filter box with all good clips.
    IMG_20230715_112558.jpg

Since I bought some double sided tape to stick the trim moulding, I decided to paint the emblems flat black and reattach them to the truck.

On the way to the beach we swung by the junk yard in Largo where I picked up a full-size spare tire and he got some window weather strips and some little tabs for the interior.

Well hot damn. I was just in that neighborhood yesterday. Amazing how much room we have to work once the radiator is out. Have your readings got more accurate since you replaced yours?

As I mentioned initially, "when I change oil next". That said, I'm not sure I'll see a difference since mine has always ran at 1/4 mark at idle/warm and hangs about 1/2 way when driving.

Pretty much what the owners manual and FSM specs shows....

You should paint the rest of your black trim. I did it to mine years ago and the fenders still look pretty good.

Just gonna leave the trim that's already black alone. Maybe get some back-to-black restore and hit it up with that...

That stuff doesn't work very well. This stuff works a lot better, and is readily available on scAmazon. Recoat a couple times and you should get a good 6-12 months out of it, depending how much sun your truck gets.

I'm thinking of doing the same to my mirrors. How did you prepare the chrome part before the Plasticote? And how many coats?

Handy as you are, you might want to try a light sanding (~ 800 grit) on one of the small areas where the clear coat is burned through, and then a few coats of clear on top. If it works out, then you can tackle the larger areas like the hood and roof. Not only will it make it look better, but it might help prevent the color coat from burning through to the primer.

To prepare the chrome on the mirrors all I did was scrubbed really good with soap and water with a sponge. I put one light coat, waited :30min , a second light coat, waited :30 then a heavy coat :30 and the last heavy coat :30 then removed all the masking and pealed the edges. Was really easy and turned out pretty nice.

As far as painting the truck I have a rust spot on the roof that's through the paint and primer. Im thinking of doing what you say to that one spot and maybe a little to the hood. Not sure how much further I want to go with this cab and bed because it's so rusty so I'm kinda embracing the worn-out look here

Just to add to this, b/c @w666 and I are apparently on the same wavelength (nothing new there eh). The more you attach the ridge where the clear meets the pigment, the cleaner you can make that transition, the better the end product will look. SprayMax 2k clear is what most folks would use, it's 2 part, but it'll also FUBAR your lungs, use proper protection.

This guys covers it pretty well, but I feel like moving to 1500 after is potentially negligible. I'd just add: This is a hell of a lot of work. And again, PROTECT YA LUNGS. You can further cut it out with compound and polish to knock down the bumps

My buddy had the hood and roof of his mustang painted at Maaco. Actually turned out nice for what it was, an old car that needed freshening up. Paint match and quality was nice and it’s held up well. This would be a decent option especially if you do most of the prep work ahead of time.

Honestly, 80% of it is in the prep. Prep, prep, prep. That, along with a steady, distanced hand that can lay down mist coats, following direction on the can... it's possible for anyone.

I doubt you're going to get similar results, but others, like @2006 Tundra AC, have had success with repainting sections to match that look pretty solid for at-home work. (his stuff) I dunno if he ever went back over and did a cutting pass on it, but he could definitely get that to a mirror shine with some compound and polish on a DA/RO rotary.
