New to forum, looking for a good Tundra or Tacoma

It's not just the dealers. There seems to be a quite a few that are masquerading as private sellers or are just a bunch of schmucks.

I did an F Book search as well. Not much luck there either. Replying requires an account which I don't have nor do I want to get one. There were plenty of very obvious scammers too.

 

Have you tried looking through either of these forums?

Thanks, I did. Unfortunately there's nothing close enough. I just need to be patient. Luckily the weather has been very unseasonably mild.

If this was a local truck, then I'll have to look especially close to frames. I know it's not a Tundra but didn't they have similar frame rust problems.
Is the price he's asking fair?

 

I haven't looked at the Tacoma and I'll probably pass on it. Even though the title is supposed clean, I bet it will end up being branded because of the frame.
I found a couple of Tundra's. The one I may go look at has 83K miles. It looks nice on the ad and I grilled the seller pretty good. One thing came up. It's the second time I'm calling about one of these so called one owner trucks that the grandson is selling it for his grandpa. Is it me just being too suspicious or is this just a coincidence?
Can the digital odometers be turned back or is it easy just to buy another cluster and swap it out?

 

What generation tundra are you asking about? The first gens are pretty good grandpa trucks. I wouldn't think much about that unless something else is fishy. No idea about the cluster.

 

Yeah both were 1st gen. The one I'm interested is an '03. At 83K I don't think there probably shouldn't be any issues. The timing belt has been changed with paperwork to back it supposedly. I'll take a good look at the frame.

 

Also any repairs or what not at the dealer should note the mileage. Your DMV stuff might also not mileages

 

Precisely. It's in Oregon so I'm sure the DMV does record them. It may be an easy check.

 

Well I won't be looking at the '03. No sooner did I ask for a VIN, the ad got pulled. I never got a reply either. Portland can be a really shady and flaky place. Oh well my 94 F150 still runs and drives. I find my best deals without really looking for them.

I found another ad by the same scammer. A completely different vehicle this time. This scumbag is busy. I wonder if there's a way to get the local cops involved?

 

Who knows. Doubt they are local at all. When I was looking for a dog all I saw were scams or people that have the the run around so much that I assumed they were scams. My wife would tell me they can only meet after 7pm, then they would text and change the address, and then they would say it's the house off the street all the way down the stairs... I told her I didn't bring a big enough gun for this bull$hit haha. It just screamed scam or holdup.

I think I may have found myself a Tacoma Double Cab. It's a 2006 with a 4.0 so no timing belts. It has a bit more miles than I want at 176K but the price seems right. I know it's a different animal from the Tundra but it should be just as good of a truck although much smaller, right?

 

My search is finally over! I bought a 2007 Double Cab Tundra SR5 4WD yesterday. I'll post more details later and maybe start a new thread.
