New Taco Vs New Tundra

I'm not going to lie, I may absolutely give this new Taco a test spin in 2026-2028 when I'm thinking about my next vehicle. Gonna give my Tundra at least another 5 years to do it's thing tho.

 

Way I see it is why have either or? Get both.

 

Ahh I have this trouble with motorcycles already, I can't start collecting trucks too

 

told the wife that, she laughed at me on giving up her tundra for a taco.

she could have the new taco and i would sell my 4runner and take over her tundra.

 

Motorcycles, trucks, all good... wives, bad.

 

She hasn't test driven one yet....

 

she has had a few taco's before the tundra.

she loves her trucks, i dont care for them myself.

 

They haven't published payload on all models yet but the number they did publish was around 1700-1750 and this was not in the bare bones trim.

So that will be in one of the hybrid configurations.

 

The 22 Tundras are at 1,300

 

1700 lb payload and not on the bare bones model (the only number published so far)
Next gen TSS (engineer said it was next gen up from current tundra)
New MTS setting (different from tundra)
Electronic swaybar disconnects on OR/Trailhunter/Pro.

Towing is still low but now has built in brake controller

I'm sure I am missing a few things. The Tundra will probably get some of those upgrades over time.

 

I'm sure when they do the Trailhunter Tundra the Old man emu suspension they are using will be able to get some more payload out of it.

 

at those specs, it going to come down to whether you want to be in a cramped cabin and have better stats than a tundra or more room for you fat a$$ and almost the same stats as a high end taco

 

Crazy thing is the Ford Maverick's payload is 1,500 lbs.

Torque? Yeah 430 lbs. Payload is 1,400.

 

1709 eh? Well, they also advertised the new Tundra to have up to 1940. After it was all said and done you can’t get one with more than 1580. I predict the new Taco will have no more than 1250.

 

Anyone who mods will likely toss the OEM suspension anyway

Personally I care more about comparing the GVWRs. It’s easy to make a truck lighter but where are they saving all that weight?

Who knows they might have learned with the Tundra, the Tacoma is their flagship truck after all...it usually gets more attention overall and is more important to the company as a whole than the Tundra.

 

taco, rav4, camry is toyota's bread and butter vehicles.

if i remember correctly, camry is like on a short gen cycle of like 5 years.

edit: yeah camry is on a 5 yr cycle on gens (exception was the xv50, it was a 6 yr cycle gen)

 

forgot to add,

tacoma has dedicated driver/pass temp knob and volume knob. fukking hate the temp change switch in the tundra.

really sucks in ND when you wake up to 30-40F temps in the morning and have to deal with 60-70 temps in the afternoon.

 

Exactly, hated when you'd have to switch from HI-Low every single day, got old very fast in my 22.

The Tundra Max versions dont really gain any performance because most of the extra power is offset by the added weight. It looks to me like the Tacoma Max system is literally pulled straight from the Tundra. The specs are identical for the motor and battery. So I assume its a similar weight gain(600 lbs)

Disagree, especially with these new mid-sizers. The GM twins with the 310hp/430 ft-lbs 2.7L or the Ranger with the 315hp/400 ft-lbs 2.7L will be able to pull really well and could easily fill the role of a half ton for a lot of people. I only need a half ton because they were the only ones with an engine that could tow my travel trailer well. These new mid-sizers are matching or exceeding some of numbers for my 2014 Ecoboost.

I feel less excited about the Tacoma because the gas engine is significantly weaker than the GM twins or Ranger. The Hybrid doesnt matter when you have a trailer hooked up doing 70 mph on the freeway, its not being utilized and is dead weight at that point.

Yeah it might be as quick in a stoplight drag. But if you are trying to use it to tow then that 465 torque is out the window and you are back to the base 317 plus having to drag the extra 600 lbs around with you.

 

Except the door stickers on the Tundra are routinely 200+ lbs lower than they should be.

The body mostly. Look at Ford. My 2014 has a 7700 lb GVWR and a payload of 1560 lbs, but the 2015+ aluminum versions were able to drop to 7050 GVWR and retain the same payload for the same trim but are still on the same axles and suspension(literally the parts swap over to my 2014)

 

Agreed but 1580 + 200 still doesn’t equal 1940, or whatever the press release stated initially.

You ever towed a travel trailer into a 30+ mph headwind at freeway speeds?

Braking and stability are important, but towing completely sucks when you dont have decent power. There is a reason why nearly everyone who tows a travel trailer in the Rockies uses either an HD diesel or an Ecoboost, even if its a smaller trailer. You roll into a campground and you very rarely see a V8 truck, never mind a mid sized.

Mid sized trucks would have no issue with a moderately sized travel trailer if they had some decent power. My Lexus GX has a 109" wheelbase and handles my 5500 lb trailer well

 

Im not sure what your point is. You asked how they get rid of the weight and I responded with the body.

Just because my F150 weighs 6200 lbs and a 2015 weighs 5500 lbs, doesnt mean the transfer case isnt just as stout(in fact they are the same). There was a lot of low hanging fruit.

 

I personally would probably appreciate a lot of the revisions on the new Tacoma but overall there's one major issue i'll never be able to accept, my new 2015 Platinum Tundra was purchased for $52,000 Cdn and the modern pricing of vehicles has nearly doubled for essentially the same product. As a middle-class income they've essentially priced me into a used vehicle or something different altogether
