Hey fellow Texan. Thank you for the kind words!. Im really liking this truck. This time I used the Mobil 1 full synthetic fuel economy. Next time, I’ll be using the one you said. That’s what I use on my FJ and it’s still going strong. It seems Mobil 1 is one of the best around.

They did not change the oil. Sales dude was BSing you. As far as the $700 charge goes they do that. Anything above TTL and doc fee is negitiable. Doc fees are capped in most states. They were trying to pull a fast one with the $700 and hoped you did not notice it. My dealer did same and when i asked what for they said we charge it to everyone. I told him i am not everyone and take it off or i drive off in what i drove here.

Doesn’t the service department have a ticket in the computer showing what work was done on what date and when and what service technician performed said work? Just call the dealer and ask for a copy of that paperwork and then show them the pictures you took of the oil and ask the service manager how he is going to resolve their lying problem.

To me it looks like they used a red filter not the OEM Toyota. Aren’t K&N and Fram filters red?

Let the dealer know that you are gonna give Carfax a call to inform them that the dealer claimed a service was done but wasn't. Most dealers lean heavily on a "clean Carfax" to sell cars. They may not want any issue brought up. and if they have to start proving it was done, lot more head ache than they may want.

When i worked for Mazda, the guy i worked beside in the next bay never changed oil filters, he just shined the old ones up and tossed the new one in the lower draw of his toolbox. I never ratted on him, but it really pissed me off because i used to think of all the people who paid dealership prices for an oil change and basically got screwed. Not saying that this is a prevalent problem at all dealerships, but it does happen unfortunately.

OP, since you just had the oil changed, I would pull the dipstick after a few hundred miles and the oil should still look pretty good.

Welcome from Louisiana, the 18 as well as all Tundra's are fine vehicles. You will enjoy because Toyota "got pick-ups right." Had the opportunity to drive the wife's BMW again this last weekend and was thinking my truck rides better than this and is quieter than this. Ton of "Mods" available for it (read beware credit card). Initially felt guilty about 1st oil change at 5000. Guilt no more and will continue q 5000 oil changes with Mobil 1 Syn 0-20 just for My piece of mind. Again WELCOME.

Just curious, if I call car fax, can the dealer come back and take revenge somehow By changing anything in the contract?. I bought the car almost a month ago now and all the papers have been signed.

Carfax isn’t going to do anything at all. That’s first. Second, the dealer can’t do anything for revenge either. But, if they didn’t change the oil, that’s just wrong, and very dishonest.

I believe that synthetic blend, such as Valvoline max life 0W 20, will also meet the specs for Toyota, according to the data that I have. I also don’t see anything in my manual for my 2020 specifying full synthetic only. However, 0W 20 only comes in a blender or full synthetic, it’s not available in conventional as none of the 0 weights are

Since I didn't see it mentioned and the OP doesn't seem to be well versed in this (which is fine) I'd point out that, at least on mine, the oil in my 5.7L at 6,000 miles on the oil........the oil on the dipstick is still golden/amber colored. I drive under normal conditions (no severe (hauling heavy loads, etc.) conditions).

I looked up the carfax of my last truck I traded in. It had a lot of stuff on it for the day after I traded it. Including replace air filter, even though it had a SC and a cleanable filter. I doubt they did half the stuff but I don’t think carfax will care either.

For this, its his word against theirs and don’t dealers eat the cost for carfax reports? So they lean towards the dealers side. He can’t prove those pics aren’t from another truck and the dealer can’t prove it wasn’t done.

Might be dishonest, but I don’t think anyone is going to do anything at this point.

I just changed mine at about 4500 miles because I am leaving for a big trip. It was pretty dark and the filter looked the same as his picture. I used Mobil 0w-20 last time and the TRD filter. No towing or severe driving.

Dealers do run hundreds if not thousands of Carfax reports so you are probably correct:thumbsup:

The oil looks old for sure. With that said, i just changed my oil yesterday. I also tried to upgrade to the aluminum housing and had leaks, but that is besides the point. When I used oil housing drain kit, the oil with zero miles on it just a few minutes of idle and a couple of high rpm revs Was very dark in the water bottle i used to capture it in as recommended. I wouldn’t worry too much about it. Oil may look really bad but still be ok. I started to do my own too. I felt the dealer Was not changing the filter and just doing drain an fill. Good luck

I got lucky with my 14. When I went down to the dealer to check it out it was still getting the go over. They had just put new pads and rotors on and had flushed the brake fluid. They had already mounted new Sumitomo GeoTour H/T's on the TRD rimso_O. I saw an empty Fram air filter box. I watched the service tech change the oil and he used M-1 which was good. He already had a set of front Weathertechs to put in. The windshield was cracked but not scheduled yet for repair. Anyways I got the 14 and the windshield was fixed the following week on their dime. Quite pleased. Tynan's Nissan is quite legit. I've bought four used trucks from them over the years. They gave me all the receipts for the stuff that the mechanic ordered which was cool. They didn't have to do that.

The dealers do eat the cost for the Carfax reports, but they’re buying them on a subscription basis. They don’t pay per vehicle

But usually in those instances they don’t want to disrupt their flow of money - the dealer. If they start going after dealers, the dealers will stop paying.

...you mean: he didn’t risk them putting in the wrong oil, the wrong amount or stripping the bolts to the splash/guard skid plate? Or, over tightening the plastic filter cartridge so it cracks?
o_O -wasting his time making an appt and waiting around for an apprentice to learn on your new truck most likely?
...to the Op, they tried to pull over a $700 up charge hoping you didn’t notice.. the sales guy is telling you what you want to hear. He 93% doesn’t care, and doesn’t probably know all the info on each vehicle coming through the lot.
Learn to DIY and don’t go back to that salesman.

If you can't change your own oil, then all of the above is the price for "free" oil changes. At Toyota dealers, I believe most owners will get their oil changed, but many aren't happy with lack of technician responsibility. What's the alternative?...Not change the oil? (I've already said I do my own oil changes for just that reason.)

Engine oil gets dark very quickly after a fresh oil change. You also can't tell by looking at the dipstick as it usually shows very light since it is just a small thin sample. Next time you change the oil, check the dipstick first and compare that color to the color that you collect when you get your 8 quarts out. The dipstick will be lighter colored compared to the dark oil in the pan.

You can't tell how old oil is by looking at a photo on the internet. I would trust the dealer changed the oil. But I would have done the same thing as you and had it changed right away if you questioned if they put inferior or the wrong oil/filter in the vehicle.
