I'm installing a Jensen CR271ML7 head set, and have a 20 pin aftermarket connector that plugs into the stock Tundra wiringConnector.jpg [IMG], and the Jensen installation manual showing the pin out for their headset [IMG]. Jensen wiring diagram.jpg What I don't have is anything showing me where the wires on the Tundra harness go-to/come-from. So I can connect, for example, the RF Speaker (+) wire on the Jensen wiring harness to the appropriate RF speaker (+) wire on the Toyota.

Anybody got a pin out or color guide of what the Tundra wires are in the stereo connector (for the headset with JBL amp)?

    TIA

Your 01 has JBL amp? Can you post a pic of factory radio and maybe what you have going on for wiring on the truck side?

Sorry to take so long to get back to you. I'm the Executive Officer for the Veteran's Coalition in support of the Convention of States movement in Colorado, and over the past two days we've had crisis upon crisis. My boss went to Japan for a week's vacation and came down with severe pancreatitis and is going to be hospitalized for at least two weeks, leaving me in charge. Not a problem, but I'm suddenly tasked with about a hundred things that need looking-after. Then my CSM had a death in the family, and my Assistant S-3 for education came down with Covid, and we're just at the start of a major campaign... so I find myself juggling cats with one hand tied behind my back. Anyway.... thank you for the response... I'll get back to you in the next day or so. It never rains, but it pours.....

The back of the radio looks like this (the connector was in the 20 pin socket on the right side viewing the pic. The other socket was not used):Radio.jpg

    The truck's connector is thus:

The front of the radio would be good too. If you follow that wire down into the dash it should go to an Amp box behind the HVAC controls. Just unbolt, unhook and remove then buy the basic Toyota harness

Sorry...I don't understand what you mean by the front of the radio would be good. The radio you're looking at in the picture is the factory radio... i.e. the one I'm replacing. If I remove the amp and the wires coming from it, where do I wire the replacement radio into?

Sorry should have clarified, a picture of the front of the radio. I'm just trying to determine exactly which radio is in your truck based on the front of it.

If you remove the amp there will be wires that plug into the bottom side of it, those are the wires you will plug in the Toyota harness to after you splice wires from Jensen unit to Toyota harness.

Excellent info all around. Thank you, thank, you, thank you! You're right. The amp is in the dash and I don't see "JBL" on it or the headset anywhere. I was told it was a JBL amp by a stereo guy who obviously isn't a Tundra guy. With the amp out of the way, this should be a snap. I don't need a great system. 99% of what I listen-to is Newstalk and what I REALLY wanted was an economical SeriusXM ready receiver with Blue Tooth for the phone.... which the $100.00 Jensen should provide. Thanks again!

I believe what he's recommending is to take the amp completely out of the system. It's located behind and beneath the heater control panel, held in place by two Phillips head screws. On the left.... one on the right. The screws are a real pain to get to. You have to come at them at an angle, and since they probably haven't been unscrewed for some time (like 20+ years), they'll be torqued- down tight, and since you are coming at them at a slight angle, it's very easy for the screwdriver tip to come out of the screw head rather than turn it. I had to use an 8" long bladed screwdriver that I pushed into the screw head with virtually all my might, and turn the screwdriver with a vise grip clamped onto the handle. Once they broke free, however, they came out easily. I was then able to pull the amp directly out the front below the heater control panel. Once out, I was able to unplug the amp (the in-dash wiring goes into it's bottom and can't really be reached until the amp is out). There are two connectors that plugged into the bottom of the amp. These are the connector that you are going to hook to your aftermarket head set, using the Metra 70-1761 pictured below. The wire colors on the Metra are NOT analogous to those coming out of the Tundra's dash, so do not worry about matching them up. They are, however, standardized for modern aftermarket head sets. So when you are hooking them to the wire sets provided by your aftermarket radio manufacturer, all you have to do is match, red to red, black to black green to green, etc., and plug the result into the back of your new headset and you should be ready to go. If you want to use an amp with your new radio, you'll probably want to buy one that is compatible with your headset and follow the manufacturer's installation instructions. There are wire bundle adapters that will allow you to directly wire into the amp that came with the car with some models of Toyota, but I haven't been able to locate one for the first gen Tundra. I'm posting a .jpg of a wire color conversion chart from the old Toyota colors to modern stereo standardized colors. The only color not listed is the orange wire used by modern headsets to connect 'illumination'. On my truck, the Toyota wire is dark green, corresponding to the orange modern wire. But as I say, in theory, as long as you use the Metra 70-1761 harness, you only have to match color to color when connecting the harness to wire set provided with your new radio.Toy v New.jpg Hope that answers your question.
