I have to run premium with the Supercharger. so no increased mileage here. If I get in it I can get down below 6mpg.

I get what you're saying. I went with 4.6L. I use the truck for a truck. Loaded hard and pulling my 6x10 scape trailer. The worst milage I got is 15mpg. Pulling hills. Empty on Highway at speed 65. Between 17.5 - 18.7. Sure it don't launch as hard as my 5.7 did but it runs fast enough, and pulls hard enough do do the job. Personally if ya need more get a diesel. I use it every day. 2016 and I have 23,000 on it. Blows away the old GMC 5.7 I had. If it was a weekend truck, or I had it that good I'd have a 5.7 SC. Or a muscle car for the drag race. Milage dose matter. If you can get better milage that's great. I bought my Tundra for reliability. Don't mean I don't want to always improve milage and power. .. just saying.

Why can't you have all three? I know we wont get 25mpgs but come on. Is it that hard to get our rigs to 18-19? It seems all the other trucks brands are leaving us behind in this area. I know some will chime in with "Toyotas are super reliable man" but I see just as many old chevy and Ford trucks as I do Toyotas on the road today. I dont think they would be #1 & 2 in trucks sales if they were selling bad trucks, the competion is just too tough.

I got 18.5 on my 1500 mile trip a few months ago with my trucks loaded with stuff :notsure:
The domestics aren't doing anything magical to get their EPA numbers. Dodge and Chevy use cylinder deactivation and Ford uses boosted V6's. All 3 put stupid air dams in the front and worthless gearing in the rear.
Google "cylinder deactivation oil consumption" and see why Toyota didn't think it was a good idea for their trucks. As for the ecoboost, yeah it has some impressive power and torque numbers but to achieve those numbers means having those turbos spool up which drops the efficiency dramatically. I have yet to talk to an ecoboost owner who gets the mileage that they were expecting.

Soo.. you get 18.5 on one trip and everything is all good? I get the cylinder deactivation debacle at chevy. Those poor bastards are losing whole motors because of the damn lifters and I'm with you on the ecoboost at Ford not producing the expected numbers. Hell, google ecoboost carbon build up problems! To be fair though google tundra air pump problem, we have problems too. What I'm saying is, why can't we have reliability, efficiency, and power? Tundra has had the same motor in these rigs for over 10 years now. Your telling me 13 city 18 highway is the best they can do in 10 years?

I've got right at 2k miles on my new truck and filled up yesterday, I calculated 13.8 but the dash was saying 15.6. That was 330 miles of highway driving, some around town stuff, some slow side road riding, and a 60 mile round trip through the hills to the lake towing the boat. My GM was pretty spot on with the mpg calculation on the dash but the Tundra has been off every fill up.

Better MPG... Are you a female? Cuz this thread would make more sense.... You don't buy a tundra with expectations of good gas milage. People at work say "you must get horrible MPG" my reaction was and will always be "i bought this truck and don't give a shit about MPG". BUCK UP or trade for a prius as everyone here has suggested. :burnrubber:

I do agree that Toyota can probably do better, and they probably are working on stuff for the next gen. People forget though that gas has a finite amount of energy and by getting more energy out of it means a leaner burn which results in more carbon. More carbon=more reliability issues. I'm curious to see how all these direct injected engines are going to fare after 10 years.
You can stretch the amount of energy each gallon of gas by making your truck lighter, lower or by gearing but all of that generally lowers the capability as well.
I'm not an engineer and I'm not saying Toyota can't do better, but I do applaud them for sticking to their guns and putting reliability and capability over all else because it ends up with money in our pocket when it comes to resale time. To me, a mpg or two is worth it when I don't eat thousands of dollars on depreciation.

Man you're a treat. If a guy says I would like better mpgs out of his truck he is considered a "female" in your eyes? No offense my man but you sound like a young boy with your comments. We all have virtually the same truck and some of us want to see improvement over the current numbers.

I wish I got better mileage out of mine. Fortunately gas is relatively cheap in AZ compared to CA. I had a 15 Silverado that got pretty good fuel mileage when it was running. It got phenomenal mileage on the back of the tow truck.
For the peace of mind and reliability I'll gladly take 15 mpg's.
Funny, this 17 Tundra gets about the same mileage as my 95 4Runner. Wife's Camry gets about 38.

I hear you, but are our trucks more capable and reliable than the others? If we were talking about comparing a camry to a malibu then, i wholeheartedly agree. I wouldn't buy a malibu at half off! But I think trucks are a different ballgame. Its the bread and butter for the American brands! As I said earlier, you can't make a shit truck and expect to stay at the top.

In my opinion the tundra is way more capable and reliable. The only thing the big 3 have on toyota is the gas mileage.

Older chevys and fords, good trucks, about same mileage as tundra. My 15 Silverado had a lot of nice features and looked good but was a nightmare.

Right now I'm in an f150 w 3.5 eco. boost. I would never buy one. I spend 85% of my time in the dirt w it. It has 0 power until the turbos spool up. Then tires spin. No bueno in sand or up hill. As soon as they spin trac control comes on in the front. Feels like the abs and you can't turn it all the way off.

On top of that, the windows have ghosts, open then won't close, randomly. Mechanics can't figure it out.
All the dodges we've had at work, the transmissions don't last.

    just my point of view.

Lol...Notice I didn't mention Dodge either? I would honestly buy a Chevy or Ford. Anything made be FCA won't be at my house!

    P.S. BPRose, nice rig.

I always liked Toyota and Nissan for mini trucks. Never even considered Toyota for a full size, if it wasn't for the terrible Chevy I would've never gotten into this great truck.
I'm guessing a lot of people out there have the same thoughts, that's why the big 3 keep selling so many. That and there are always some big incentives with them. Not too many incentives offered with the tundra.

    Honest, thanks.
