Count on it not being worth all that much in a few years when it has 250,000 miles on it... yes you may defy the odds, but don't count on it.

Unless you got a killer trade-in or put down a big deposit on the 'rado, I don't see how you could possibly have enough equity in that truck to "cash out" and finance two vehicles.

Either way, you'd be better off looking at a lower trim level Tundra with fewer miles. The "Pro" trim is sweet, but you pay for it.

How long of a loan are you planning on with 20k miles a year? Used cars are going for a premium right now but in a few years its going to be pretty outdated and very high milage. Old Trucks usually sell well because they are needed for work, so it will retain some value at 250k miles
You might be better off financially getting a New Double cab base for 34k ish on a 7 year loan. And adding the things it didn't come on it as you can with used new takeoffs or better than stock aftermarket parts.

I would say be patient and wait for the right deal. 24k for a truck with 157k miles, it is outside of my comfort zone. I bought mine at a dealer in April this year... I paid 26K (OTD) for a 2014 Tundra Platinum with 79k miles. The truck is mint (not a single scratch) with tons of aftermarket goodies...

If you're set on a TRD Pro, then that's a good deal.

Keep in mind that 20,000 miles/year is nothing for us Texas drivers. I drive up and down I-35 for work, to see my daughter, and go to Baylor events. Just one round trip to DFW is 500-600 miles. 12-15 trips a year on top of regular daily driving and you're at 20,000 easy. Highway driving is also much easier on our trucks. Less braking, gear changes, lower RPMs (generally), etc.

    you’ll sell it.
Scotty Kilmer always says that highway miles are 10% of city miles. So a truck with 157000 highway miles would have the same wear as a truck driven 15,700 miles in the city. I bought my 2018 Tundra CM with 85000 miles(mostly highway) and it still drives like a brand new truck!!. Not all miles are created equally!

    Do it! :smack:

If it’s that clean on the outside, I’d say its well taken care of! You’ll pay well over 2X $ for a new TRDPRO! If It was close to me I would buy it with little hesitation and sell my 2013 for a couple grand less!

Dunno about that. I wouldn't think twice about doing 16K city driving on two oil changes, one air filter and a smidgen of tires/brakes/shocks. Nobody can convince me that would be a wise move for 160K of highway driving.

If I'm hearing you right, this TRD Pro at $24K puts you in the right spot to make a move with your wife's car? And you are comfortable with those two moves? (by the way I agree, the Cruze is small for a baby mobile) Your main concern is in 2022ish if you need to make another truck change which would you be better off trying to sell; a 2015 TRD Pro with 220k miles -or- a similar year Chevy 1500 with 175k miles.
The answer is that the US manufacturers make some great trucks, but none of them hold the resale value with high mileage like a Tundra, unless they are a diesel. For example, in 2018 when I bought my current truck, I sold my '08 DC Tundra with 192k miles for $11k. Barring a major change to the Tundra reputation people know that you get a good truck even with 200k miles. Just do a good job with maintenance documentation and buyers will be out there.

I would rather buy a clean 157k mile Tundra with records than a 100k example with no records. It is all in how it has been maintained and treated. If the entire undercarriage is wasted, skip it.
Also, if it has a brake controller installed, you may want to look further to see if it spend a lot of time towing, which is harder on a vehicle.

BTW, Toyota truck resale is very strong regardless of model changes.

That's a sweet deal on a Pro. I bought my 2014 SR5 for 20k out the door with 114k miles on it. Drives like new. I wouldn't blink an eye at 150k+ miles. These things are bulletproof.

My family has been buying high mile Toyotas for a long time, just have to know what you're looking for to tell how it was taken care of. That's all that matters with Toyotas - service history and maintenance. Miles are almost irrelevant. I bought my dad a spotless Yaris with 120k on it, hes at almost 400k now with nothing but regular maintenance, 2 alternators, and 1 wiper motor.

Run the Blue Book on it with a few years of depreciation and another 100k miles. I don't know that I would spend the money on it, but that's me. I paid $18k for a 2008 Limited with 84k ono it, and then put about $1k in suspension upgrades into it. It's no Pro for sure, but at 157k I guarantee you that Pro probably needs replacements/rebuilds on the shocks I would think. Factor that in.

As stated above, not all miles are equal. I bought a 2004 Dodge Cummins with 200k on it, that spent 95% of it's time buzzing up and down I-5 with a small cargo trailer. I put another 100k on it and sold it for about $4k less than what I paid for it.

I would have a long hard talk with myself about how badly I needed/wanted a Pro before I dropped the money. I don't know what they're going for now, but when I was shopping in January and February, an SR5 with 150k on it would go between 12-14k for a 2nd generation up to 18-22k for a 3rd generation.

Well y’all I brought her home! The mechanic told me that everything looked great with no issues from what they could tell.

I’m really happy with the truck. Working on cars was a hobby of mine in the past and I have a little experience working on them (timing belts, transmission swaps, mods etc.) but nothing too crazy. For peace of mind I was able to get a 4yr 80k mile extended warranty for at a decent price. I guess we’ll find out what happens, but in the long run I know I’ll be happy with this truck for a long time and it will feed my inner gear head once again. I can definitely see myself keeping it for a long time. Issues or not.

Thanks for the response everyone no matter what side of the fence you were on! There was great turn out and it’s really appreciated!

Nice looking truck, congratulations. When I buy a “new” used one, the first thing I do is change every fluid in it.

Not sure if you already did this but I took GM to court over a lemon law case due to the water pump. They bought it back at $500 less than purchase price after 6 years and 100k miles.

Welcome and Congrats! You'll be fine with the used purchase, I'm expecting...

A buddy of mine is a Toyota Mechanic here in San Diego. If you're buying used, he just advised check for Leaks around the Engine, trans case, tranny, if yes/leaks, stay away the engine may have been cracked and no longer OEM.

I've bought a used 99 Toyota Landcruiser had 110,000 miles, for $13K in 2005. LC now has about 150K, runs well, smogs well and clean garage.

Just bought a 2014 Tundra Double Cab SR5, 155K Miles, 4x4 in Marshall Texas for $18900 OTD, she's a Beast.

There's an article about a guy getting Million Miles (https://pressroom.toyota.com/million-mile-tundra-2016) and Toyota Took his truck for a new truck. My daily driver is a 2006 Lexus GS300, I bought used for $13K, 110K, I now have 260K Miles on her.

I started with a 85 Toyota, 4x4, 22RE, Rancho 6" lift with 33's, sold her when she had 250K+ miles on her, always ran like a champ. Only leaked from the front axle, had her seals all replaced. Kick myself for selling her, that's one I regret along with my 83 Honda ATC 250r. All the other Yotas my family has are low miles and of course no problems, knock on wood.

I agree with other posters, when they say the Warranty is over rated. Yota, Glock & Can Am, each very similar in terms of Reliability/Engineering.

150K miles, she's proofed in and just getting started, based on Million Mile Tundra story.... Enjoy & Cheers!

THIS^^^^^ Bring it to Toyota!! They will charge you around $125. They will check out the truck. The report is detailed, down to MM of brake pads left.

Then, like it has been said....Ask if the transmission fluid changed (they can look at the color), was the diff fluid changed, spark plugs, etc. Then get a repair estimate to bring the truck up to snuff for you.

Someone totaled my Corolla XRS. I wanted another Black 2005 or 2006 Black Corolla XRS. I live on Long Island. I found one with 130,000 in Topeka, Kansas. I had them drop the car off at a Toyota Dealer. They gave me a detailed report and I even spoke to the mechanic who said the car was clean and that if it were a bit cheaper, he would have purchased it. I had the car shipped to me as part of the purchase price. The report was detailed enough so I knew what I was getting. Spend the money. Speak to the mechanic who is working on it and explain your situation. Ask him to be through. Know what you're getting.

As far as the mileage, my Corolla had 130,000. I now have
200,000 and expect at least another 75 to 100,000. Plus a PRO will have a higher resale if you want (need) to sell it.

Crazy part is that Cruiser of yours is worth at LEAST $13k now depending on condition.

Congrats on the new truck OP!
