I'm a little bummed about how well it has held up. :rofl:I only did plastidip as a way of testing to make sure that I liked the black over the silver. I want to do it right but the darn thing still looks as good as the day I painted it.

When I do paint I will prime with etching primer and then may use a textured black to look closer to the powder coat on the bumper.

Lol... I have used the Rustolium bed liner before and it is very textured. Kinda like sandpaper. Not bad looking but not sure of the longevity. I do have some concern that since the skid is already textured silver that the Rustolim may make it too textured. That’s why I was asking @Trdwillie14 what brand he used.

Ok, so I installed the N-Fab bumper today. Not difficult, but I o have some observations and tips for others.
    • Potential Safety Issue: (not an n-fab issue, but install approach)Due to the difficulty reaching the nuts while installing the N-Fab skid plate, it was suggested to use rivnuts. Before even touching the truck, I spent considerable time trying to install rivnuts that would align with the holes in the skid. I could only get the 4 corners aligned and thought I'd have to dremel the 2 top center holes. However, before I did, I noticed that the rivnuts did not install correctly. When installing a rivnut, the crimp tool is supposed to compress the rivnut forming a washer type ridge on the opposite side of the material/hole. The n-fab skid mounting bracket is too thick for this ridge to form on the opposite side. The ridge was being created inside the bracket hole forming a friction hold. This seemed secure, but is highly dangerous. The skid could go flying at any time with any given jolt or bump. Granted this could have been the result of my particular rivnut tool, but in my case, I removed the rivnuts and stuck with the bolt through. Anyone using rivnuts, Please examine them and make sure the compressed ridge is on the opposite side of the bracket forming a solid and correct hold. If you do not see this ridge, replace the rivnut immediately with a bolt through.
    • Tip: Remove the old bumper from the top. I've had my bumper off before and removed the grill many times, so this was just a natural approach for me. Removing the grille allowed me to remove the bumper skin first and then the aluminum crash bar second. IMHO this makes it much easier and also allows me to store the stock bumper/skin easier.
    • Tip: Removing the grille gives you all the room in the world to install the n-fab skid plate. You can easily hold the rear nuts from the top. Again, all the room in the world making the skid install a non issue.
    • Tip: Use bumper shims. Using 1/2 inch shims pushes the bumper forward just enough so that it does not rub on the grille and also provides enough room to remove the grille in the future. I had Coachbuilder shims, but any 1/2 inch shim set will do. Also, if you have a RCI engine skid like I do, the bumper shims aligns up the n-fab skid and RCI skid perfectly. No overlapping necessary.
Anyhow, I have not installed the parking sensors yet or wired the switches for the light bar. The H11 and Way 2 pin connectors cam in so I'll be able to make a an adapter harness to plug the BD fogs into the OEM fog wires. Not the best pics, but I'll provide better ones later in the daylight.

Finally got my switches installed. I used the Rough Country light bar with the DRL’s so I hooked them up to a separate switch that will automatically cut off when the headlights come on. Also took a different route then most routing the wires to the engine bay through the grommet in the driver floor board. Already had the AMP power step wires going through there so it was easy to use the same grommet.

Finally painted the n-fab skid black to match the bumper and RCI skid.

Also, being in a state that requires a front license plate, Local LE suggested that I find a better way to mount the front plate instead of flush on the n-fab skid. While technically not against the code, I was told that a LEO having a bad day or one right out of the academy may give me a hard time about it. Just was not worth the potential hassle so I fabricated a matching bracket to display the plate vertical to the bumper.

Looking good there Van. I wouldn't pull you over for a license plate violation, just sayin. Thanks again for your suggestions and answering my questions a few weeks ago. I am gonna join the N-Fab club tomorrow. Tired of waiting on my lights and Switch Pro. Will pull back off to install them later.

Thanks Jeff. The license plate thing just was not worth the potential hassle. I have a good relationship with the local agencies and sometimes the young recruits get a little over enthusiastic in their job. Plus the EZPass cameras can’t pick up the plate when it’s flush on the n-dan skid.

Glad your getting yours. I take it the guy finally responded back to you or did you go through a dealer? Post pics when mounted.

Yes he did, made a 5+ hour one way drive to Johnson City TN and got it for $750. Already powder coated and came with light bar. All about saving money if I can. Great suggestion you had on bumper shims, definitely leaves enough room to remove grill insert and it doesn't rub. What do you think?

Looks good. I like the matching color powder coat. That light bar fits perfectly in the center opening. What light is that? Also, you going to put pods in the end cap opening, leave it open or get the covers?

Thanks man! Yeah, the lightbar was a perfect fit, it is the Rough Country either 40" or 42", can't remember. Got two pairs of pods on order to fill in openings. I pulled off covers and they were filthy. Thought about trimming them to fill outside edge but not sure yet.

Sounds good. Yea, the Rough Country light bar is a solid choice. Mine is RC as well but is the model that include the DRL strip.

Also, you may need these generic bracket mounts for your pods. I just had a box of these that I did not need, but just sent them back.

@Clemshady Now that's you've had the chance to sit back and observe it, what are your thoughs on the n-fab? Personanly I think it looks way better in person than any photo.

@BayRunner, I have to agree with you. I am liking it a lot. Gives it a nice clean look and everything is easily accessible. The components on the factory bumper gave me a headache eveytime I had to work on something.

Yup, and now with all that front end clearance, you have ana excuse to put on 34" (295's) or 35" tires. :mudding:

Switch Pro 9100 installed. Now waiting for DD pods to get shipped. If anyone is on the fence on the N-FAB MRDS bumper, go ahead and make the swap. The factory bumper is loaded up with so much crap when you need to work on something. It takes an engineering degree to put it back together. With the N-FAB the clearance, access, and tire size options make it worth it.

Fab MRDS with Boss bumper shims. Fit a 42inch light bar in but had to make my own brackets to get it to work. Converted factory fog light harness to Dt connectors for the DD pods.

Powder coated the skid plate and installed rivnuts to the frame so it can be taken off easily in the future.

installed parking sensors back on the bumper.
