I like the idea and durability of the clear bedliner, but it makes the fenders slightly lighter in color.

I'm a little embarrassed even admitting I did something so stupid.

I had purchased a like new Winchester 30-06 and 7mm08 from a friend earlier in the year and had yet to even shoot them. Finally, I got some free time so loaded up the guns and ammo and headed for the hills. I know of a pretty secluded spot where I can set up some targets so I went there. Everything was going pretty good, both rifles shoot good and accurate, especially the 30-06. I was shooting in various positions to get a feel for the rifles but the weather turned windy and I was just about to pack up and head home but I thought I'd first finish off the last 4 or 5 30-06 shells. I also decided to shoot over the bed of my tundra to help stabilize me in the wind. I've shot over the bedsides on every truck I've owned and I've always was extra cautious were the other side of the bed was. I also moved in closer to the targets and up and out of the shallow arroyo I was in to attempt getting out of the thick dust. Maybe I was just enjoying my new rifle too much but on the last shot, at the lowest target, I noticed I missed. In fact I didn't even see the dirt fly up around it. That's when I noticed;

I had just shot my truck.

I'm always super careful when dealing with any gun but I'm always real careful when shooting from the truck for this very reason. I never shot any of the previous POS vehicles before. No, I have to shoot the hardest to find truck that I really love and cherish. I still bugs me. I loaded up and headed home. I stopped by the local body shop first just to get an idea of the repair cost, $800. I was going to get it fixed right away but I'm worried that they won't match the paint right. I'm not sure if I want the small blemish at the top of the bed or mismatch paint that won't fade the same over time. This was a painful day.

After some drinking and thinking, for the time being, I've decided to just fix my mistake myself and maybe later get it fixed professionally. I started by removing the bed cap and surveying the damage myself. I'm really lucky the bullet didn't go all the way through. I was able to knock most of the protruding dent back down with a body hammer and dolly and I just used some touch up paint and clear coat for now. Under the bed cap, I removed all the peeling paint, sanded the area, and applied several coats of primer to keep the rust away then I went over it with touch up paint and clear. The touch up paint wasn't very good so the bed side came out like shit. Reminder of my stupidity I guess.

I took the bed cover apart and pulled the aluminum back together as much as I could. I was originally going to weld it but I was afraid to warp the cover so I decided to use some industrial metal filler. We use the same filler to temporarily fix stuff at work and it is damn strong. I sanded that down and used some finishing putty I had laying around. Sanded that down, primered and painted over the portion that was damaged. Eventually, I'm going to repaint the entire bed cover panel but my dad was getting pretty sick at the time so I only really had time to paint a small section. Most people don't notice either so I may leave it for the time being. Who knows, I'll probably mess up the bed cover with something else anyway.

The cover came out great but the bed side looks like shit. Still pisses me off and bugs me to this day. Unfortunately, I don’t have close or easy access to a good body shop that I trust so it’ll probably stay this way for a while. People drive like morons around here so it’ll probably get ran into at some point anyway.

To be honest, I might even sell that 30-06, haven’t even touched it since that day (still in the gun case from that day.
