I’m a new member here, and also new to owning a Tundra. I’m buying it tomorrow, 3 hours away, so unsure of total condition. But it’s legal, I need a truck, and it’s a good deal.

The pickup has a 4.7 with 190k, 4x4 works well, had the frame recall, and overall looks like it’s in good condition from what I’ve seen in pictures.

I figured I would join the forums because I have been interested in getting into one, and continuing to own them. From what I have seen growing up around them they are reliable and rugged pickups. Another reason I joined is because I had looked at another Tundra last night, a (purple?) single cab 4.7 SR5. Upon inspecting it, I noticed the front frame behind the front bumper on the drivers side and behind the front drivers wheel was rotting away. I figured coming here would be the best possible place for insight, information, and past experiences on where to look on the trucks for rust. I know it does need rockers for next inspection later on this year, but to what extent I am unsure.

Any help and info would be very appreciated, and I hope to continue to post on these forums and share my experiences as well.

I had a First Gen Tundra 4x4 A/C cab and that truck was awesome. The 4.7 motor was like a Timex , so dependable and cheap to maintain. I'm going to buy another one for my son in a few years when he gets ready to drive.

Welcome from Maine. From the pic it looks like you're in a northern climate. If the frame's been replaced, that's great. Anything else it might need will be normal maintenance stuff.

Welcome. There seem to be two criteria for being a member of this forum.

1- You must have an unnatural hatred for Ford and especially the f150. This hatred doesn't have to be based in any facts, feelings seem to count for a lot on this one.
2- You don't have to even like Tundras, but you have to know what a tundra is and appreciate that Toyota gave mere mortals this gift.

Honestly I don't understand #1 but look around and let me know if I'm wrong. Nice looking truck and congrats from Utah.

Welcome from NC! You say the truck had the frame recall be cautious as there were two fixes for this recall. One was frame replacement which is great! However the other fix was to spray the frame with some type of rust and corrosion film. If your truck falls under the spray fix make sure that there is no rust on that frame.

@KarmaKannon its not irrational, Fords are known to not be reliable. Hell look what this one did, it couldn't even sit in park without breaking down.

    Welcome from The Dirty South...:D

Now, on to your question...go peruse this thread, it's not very long and will show you where to look for rust issues in particular.

    https://www.tundras.com/threads/early-1st-gen-2000-2003-tundra-frame-replacement-faq.54331/

When you say it had the recall, do you mean it had the frame replaced or it was inspected and coated...and how long ago was this? There is a big difference between new frame and inspected and coated. If the frame was replaced, then it's the least of your worries. I drove 28 hours round trip in 34 hours to buy a 2005 Tundra that had had the frame replaced 3 years earlier...all the pics sent to me showed a great frame...closeups of the frame...but what they didn't show was that cancerous rust that was on EVERYTHING else. The hood latch had rusted broken and every metal surface under the hood that wasn't painted was covered in rust....the brake shields were nearly rusted away. After looking at it for 10 minutes I turned around and drove 14 hours home.

If you haven't gotten them yet, have him send you pictures of all 4 wheel well areas from behind the wheels (so you can see the suspension), the rear axle, the transfer case and steering rack. Those are all area's that rust can mean higher replacement costs. I really hope this works out for you...that's a good looking truck...

Doesn't count. I think that shot was taken in California which is well known for geological activity.

It self destructed! There was no other choice. It started with an oil change, but the truck knew it was in for a life full of repairs.

Great! As others have said, find out if the "frame recall" was a full replacement or just the coating. The coating was not really a fix.

I'm outside Portland. What part of the state are you in?

Edit: Just re-read your original post. Did you buy it yesterday?
