I'm trying to locate a pic of an old guy I met in Sterling AK. 80ish. He had a large collection of vintage chainsaws all in running order. Also had a few Mastadon tusks he dug out. He had an original Panther Arctic Cat snow machine out front. Crazy collection. He made Diamond willow wood collectibles for extra money...

@ColorodoTJ ,Glad to be able to help a bit . One thing about the 550 xp ... they had a large run of them with the transfer port gaskets installed improperly . It caused some pretty decent air leaks . The Auto tune system was able to adjust the air fuel mixture and keep most of these saws from frying up ,but the saw would run badly at times . If yours is doing that , it’s a fairly simple fix to correct .

Mine is a bitch to start. When running it does well.

I didn’t check the compression myself. I had a shop tell me it was low compression. The charge to repair was over 500.00, so I would just buy a new saw at that point.

Is that on cold start ,or hot restart ? If it’s restart...The 545,550,555,and 562 can be hard to restart when hot at times . It’s generally after they’ve been worked hard ,then shutoff and sat around for about 10 minutes . They heat soak . Best way to start one of them then is to pump the purge bulb about 5-10 times ,set the start switch to choke ,then to high idle ,then start the saw .
Go over to the sites that I mentioned ,and post how your saw is running . Also mention where you live and ask if there is anyone in your area that can help you out .
If the piston and cylinder look okay ,and it’s hard to cold start , it could be that the auto tune system needs to be reset ,or to relearn . Again ,you can find that over at ope ,or arboristsite .
Wish you were closer ,as I like to be able to sort your saw out with you .

Glad to see I'm not the only one with multiple chainsaws.

How's that Chinese knockoff coming along?

It runs fairly well . Waiting to see what fails . The only thing that I changed was the wristpin circlips . I went oem ,as the aftermarket ones have been known to fail .

Just checked for p/n s and prices .
Piston and cylinder from Husqvarna pn ,577764705 price ,$121.79
    Cylinder base gasket pn , 525315801 price , $2.22
Those prices are straight off of Husqvarnas parts site . So , $500 is a bit steep to say the least .

Well , I can’t really recommend a brand . But you are most likely looking at something in the 40-45 cc range . It’ll be in the home owner line of saws ... Most likely Stihl ,Husqvarna . Your best bet is to visit an OPE dealer . Buy from the one that you think will give you the best support .Stay away from box stores ,as they can’t service what they sell . Sorry that I can’t be more specific . Everyone has different needs and circumstances when it comes to OPE needs .

He didn’t want it ,and can’t get it to run ,so it’s my next project . Should make a good truck saw . McCulloch PM555, built in 1977,60cc’s built on the same chassis as the two PM700 in my avatar . It has compression . Once I get it clean ,I’ll be able to see what’s up with it . I hope that the cylinder and piston are good .

I was thinking about this thread the other weekend when i was helping my buddy cut down a couple trees.
He bought a brand hew husqvarna saw from lowes, and half way through the second tree the brake locked when the guard was forward or back.
We couldn't get that bastard brake to get loose enough to go around the drive. After an hour of messing with it and plenty of swearing, youtube saved the day and got the guard in the run position and went back together just fine.

Well, it’s clean . There was actually a decent saw under all that mung . The piston and cylinder are good to go . Gotta find a muffler , a bar plate ,a set of felling dogs for it .Before I do that , I’ll fire it up just to be sure the ignition is sound . And yes, it was beat on ,and not maintained . The rim sprocket was an original ,and the guide bar nose sprocket teeth were basically gone . So, it was in effect a solid nose bar . Says a lot for how solid of a saw the old Macs were .
Speaking of heavy ...I got to run a neighbors old 797 Mac . 125cc of old school grunt . It was like holding up a cinder block with a bar and chain on it . Those old fallers that lugged them around all , day every day had to be some tough folks .

Well ,this is my current crop of neighborhood saws that need attention .
The Echo needed some major tlc . But now all it needs is a carb check valve and some tweaking to the fuel metering circuit . The Husqvarna smoked the Piston and cylinder . Plus ,it needs a few minor pieces to make it 100% again . The Stihl is a lost cause . I got it apart and cleaned . Thought I could rescue the cylinder ,and go with an after market piston . But the plating is gone in the cylinder . A new P&C cost $350+ ... that doesn’t include the wrist pin bearing ,or crankshaft seals . You can buy the saw (MS 311 ) for 450ish . Kind of a shame .

It’s a Husqvana 350 ,50cc homeowner type saw . Piston ,cylinder were scored ,muffler and some pieces parts missing . The thing probably had less than 5 tanks through it given the lack of wear on the drive sprocket . But, it was filthy and not well kept, and the guy ran it factory lean with 2B0AECE1-6586-43EF-AB6A-9E15F3B05612.jpg TCW3 oil in it . Put a 50cc 346 XP piston and cylinder on it ,along with the muffler and other parts . Got all of it a cost because I grind chains for him when he gets slammed with work fo N/C . The thing will surprise a few folks that expect it to run like a 350 . It’ll eventually go to someone that needs a saw and will Maintain it . Sorry about messing up the posted words and pics . I’m a saw hack ,not a typist ,or computer guy :bananadance:

Thanks ! These things can be picked up for next to nothing ,or in this case free . Even at full price,or aftermarket ,you can get them back running for less than $200 with a 346xp P&C . Just make that the cause of the failure is identified ,or it can get expensive . I’ll sell it for what the parts cost to someone local that needs a firewood saw .

Wish I could find a pic of my grandpa and his saw...that man had arms bigger than my thighs...old logger and forest service guy. Toughest guy I knew. Favorite story my grandma told me was they were at a bar and Grandpa got into a fight. Grandma wanted grandpa's friend to help him out. He looked up at the fight then back to his drink, "oh hell, he's got it, there is only four of them."

Well, nothing to report on the Tundra . Other than I really like it .
So , this is what I’ve had this last week . An MS361 with a bad coil ,and a botched carb rebuild .
And, I picked up this old Jonsered70E (from ‘79-83 ) for 50 bucks . Needed the correct chain ,carb rebuild ,fuel line ,and the tank cleaned and relined . Runs great ,but heavy as heck .860FCBA1-AA65-462C-87E8-08B5A387344C.jpg24764F74-C53F-4107-840D-76D92CA302EE.jpg9B6E073C-C598-4D29-91C6-97FFB5A1B19F.jpg6BE36200-A3AD-485F-AD2C-3B6E10933C8D.jpg

Love the Stihl's, sold a couple but still have two 460's and a 660. Been thinking of selling the 660 as I don't want to cut something large enough that I need the 660 over the 460 to do it. Also, have a Husky 350, stout little saw, very nice for limbing.

Picked up a free 350 that needed a P&C ,plus muffler about a month ago . Put a 346xp P&C ,and muffler on it . Makes a pretty snappy little firewood saw . We’re coming up on cutting season for a lot of folks ,and someone short on bucks will need an inexpensive saw . So, I’ll let it go for the $150 I have in it .

I always wanted to put the 346 jug on the 350, but haven't had any real issues with the 350 yet, not even the muffler bolts, so don't want to open it up yet. $150 is a good deal for that saw

Awesome thread. I love chainsaws - but I currently only have one. I am and always have been a STIHL guy. I currently run an MS391. Back in high school I worked on a logging crew and that is where I developed the affinity for STIHL products.

Kinda hard to describe . But, if your idle is okay ( chain not spinning due to high idle , saw not stalling ,or falling flat on acceleration ) , you want the high side to be slightly rich ( four stroking ) when warmed up and before the bar hits the wood . After it starts to cut , it should clean up into a nice 2 cycle . However , most newer saws have a rpm limiting coil ,and it’s easy to mistake the sound of the limiter for a rich carb setting .
Try looking at you tube for a video that says something like “tuning a saw in the cut “.

If you do have problems with the bolts , you can get the muffler brace from a 346/353 . Solves the problem . You do have to modify the brace a bit to fit the 350 . PN 544 80 98 01 .

Just finished getting this thing back in running order for a freind . She’s only 60cc’s , but will pull a fairly long bar without losing rpm . Nice firewood saw . 6C7FEC70-7F2A-4C47-9E88-D90281452626.jpg795BE07C-15BA-4B6A-89D6-B7CAE5518667.jpg 86CF5C38-8327-4527-AEBA-20B126E5CAF2.jpg

This is my chainsaw, there are many like it - but this one is mine.
I've owned it for a few years, and it's never let me down.

Mostly just chains ,saws out of tune ,and one crushed saw . But, a couple of days ago , a neighbor drops these by . 2 Homelite Super EZ’s from the early to mid 80’s ,and a Mini Mac 35 from around 1975 . Got one of theHomelites running after carb work ,and some minor adjusting . The other one is gonna be harder ,no spark ,and those Parts are hard to find . As to the Mac ... it has spark ,which is important because it uses points which are nla .
