So I have been trying to convince the wife that we need to just build a home gym for years. Somehow I just got an approval a few weeks ago. So the process started. I decided that the best way to achieve this is by keeping her engaged in it by starting with things she would be interested in.

I have been following powerlifting programs for a couple years. I am leaning more towards “hybrid” training by including mma/CrossFit style conditioning(sled and tire workouts)in order to try and stay “leanish”. I am getting the wife into this style of training and let her pick the cardio equipment.... she picked the rower.

Phase 1: First equipment order and platform build.

My garage has some nasty elevation changes left to right and your typical drainage slope front to rear. I decided I needed an elevated platform. This got a bit expensive but will be worth it. I used a free layer of 1/4” plywood that my brother gave me followed by 2 layers of 3/4” plywood. He is in the construction business and after deciding that I didn’t want to pour a pad on to my existing floor we choose shims out of 2x4’s. If you made it this far here are some pics...
    The first equipment order was:
    -bar and 160#’s in bumpers
    -330# steel plates
    -Rogue sled w strap
    -Rogue axle bar
    -Spud inc sled strap kit
-Spud inc Extra heavy weight kettlebell strap.
    -5,10# mace’s
    Tires:
    -556 # 70” tire
    -3xx # 60” tire
    -dump truck tire
    - car tire(for dragging while doing rows or other exercise)

    Picking up tomorrow:
-Gym mats to finish the floor
    -another 160 bumper set
    -4 more steel 45’s
-sh!t ton of change plates for loadable DB’s.

The next order is the rower and loadable DB’s.

You might need a bigger lift kit for those.

Nice setup. You must have a big garage. Do you have a place to park the Tundra?

I have a kettlebell strap. Basically feed it through 25’s or smaller till you get your weight and use that... yes I know that has limitations but I don’t use kettlebell’s typically in my current program. Maybe one day I’ll get some.

Haha nope it’s a regular size 2 car... I just have everything else crammed in the rest. If I need car wash I have to move both quads and the motorcycle lol. The Tundra has to stay outside.

Got all of the mats down and the rest of the plates in. Thank god the delivery guy had a couple tricks on how to move them by yourself. I moved 2 in the past and about died. With this method I could have moved them all day.

Now we wait to order the rower.

    That’s the important step!

I just got some more Spud inc stuff in today. I think I have an obsession to their stuff. I got the complete sled kit with upper body strap, lower body strap, belt and sled strap. I almost ordered everything else I wanted since some of its on sale on EliteFTS site for their anniversary sale.... but trying to stick to the plan Rower next.

As long as I can stay focused phase 2 will be the rower and maybe the kids technique bars since they keep asking.

Phase 3 & 4 will depend how the money part plays out for the rest.

3 will either be the Texas Power bar and Deadlift bar, trap bar, multi angle bar and other miscellaneous things...
4 will be the final purchase of the equipment which will be the Rogue RM-4 rack, GHD, Safety squat bar and other random items from them. Then I’ll be done and no more pay gym memberships!

Sounds like a solid plan/phase setup!

GHD? You mean GHR? Those are KILLER! Didn’t realize how weak my hammies were until I tried those for the first time! LOL

Check out Titan fitness racks, basically the same as Rogue for a fraction of the cost.

Thank you. I think I’m on plan number 675 lol. The GHD is the name of the bench. Glute ham developer. I hear you on GHR’s kicking your ass.. first time I did those on a reverse hyper machine there was about 180 pounds on it... I think I ended up with 50 pounds lol... although I was trying to learn the movement it’s still sucks. If I had room for a Reverse hyper machine I would grab one. I just saw a video of someone that hooked up a small cable to where the belt goes and using it as a low pulley so for rows and stuff.

I have looked in to Titan a few times. One of those times was the same day their J Cup problem came out. So I was a bit nervous about going down that road. I still may consider them for their yoke though.. I have my primary equipment planned out but I want a yoke and theirs is about 50% of the cost of Rogues so I may try them on that.

The rower is what I use most. From experience and for what it’s worth don’t skimp out on a rower, concepts 2 can’t be beat!!! As far as titan goes, I have their ghd and it is pretty solid for the price. I can go ham on it an not worry about it moving or breaking.

I have read their quality has really improved in the last couple years, I have had a Titan T-3 power rack for a couple years and it is been great, the finish could be better but can't see how I could ever break it, welds are solid and the holes are laser cut.

oh yeah I have heard they are great for their price.. i mean they basically exist to copy Rogue and manufacture in China and give a good value for the price. I am not arguing that. When my coach said that he liked his old rack I thought...ok this guy is constantly working with a high 400+ pound bench and 700 or 800 pound squat...so if he didn't kill it I probably won't either.... but that day is when that guy had 315 crash onto his face because his J Cup broke... yeah thats not going to work for me... in their defense they took care of it and I believe have fixed that issue. Im not knocking them I just want something that I know I won't have an issue with....Kinda like buying a Tundra over an F150... sure the F150 may work for a while...but we know who wins the dependability award lol.

Yeah concept 2 for sure!! I really wanted to get the model D to get a good deal....but the new model has some features that I think are better for an area that isn't exactly climate controlled... the sealed chain thing is pretty cool. I have seen Titan's GHD and it looks like a good one...but right now i am playing with the 5k ships for free from Rogue. We have a "local" company up in Everette called PR Lifting that I ordered all my weight plates, bumpers and will be getting all the bars from except the SSB and won't pay a penny of shipping. I just put that same amount of weight in my cart on EliteFTS and shipping was almost 2k. So i took a budget plate over a higher quality as to save 50% cost. I weighed out all my plates and have it worked out so that at 135 on the bar its more like 139...but at 315 its more like 317. Thats not that bad. While I am prepping for my meet I will most likely continue to train DL at the gym my coach uses and they have calibrated plates.

Back to PR Lifting real quick... Anthony is a great guy to work with!!! They have some really good products and if your local you can save a HUGE amount on shipping. I just got all 8 of my mats for my platform and at 97 pounds a piece that shipping would suck too...yes I know i can use stall mats and find them locally also...Thats what they carry and they are nice.

Absolutely, that is what I did when I was in Cali. I found a local shop selling the bumpers at a fraction of the cost and picked up a package. Rogue is quality, no doubt about that, but for the ghd and the rower I got it from Amazon with free ship!!! Haha. But I have been adding from then on for a couple of years and am pretty set... for now ;)

Concept 2 rower on Amazon.... son of a..... I can’t believe I didn’t search that. Looks like I have something to do when I get home. Rogue quoted $60 shipped to my house. There is the “upgraded” GHD on Craigslist. Thought about just shooting them a standing offer too.

I have a love/hate relationship with that place. I went to get the first load of lumber 2x4's, 3/4 plywood and it took almost 2 hours to get it down. I was !! Now granted the girl running the forklift didn't skip a step or cut a corner... I kinda wished that OSHA would have just happened to be there. They would have gotten a 100% for sure. The part where i lost it was after she got my plywood down and let me in i was loading it and they locked me in with the little gates and there was about 10 associates just standing there watching. So I went about my loading since she let me in...then went to grab the 2x4's and they were nowhere to be found. Instead of just one of those people asking if I needed anything they watched me like I was a caged animal for about 5 minutes while I searched....Then I went ape sh!t and lost it. It wasn't till i ran over the second fence heading for them that they figured something wasn't right. Fast forward a lot of yelling happened at the manager who was one of them then tried to tell me he was short staffed...but enough to have almost a dozen people staring at me. I wasn't buying that. Anyway they got the forklift back got my 2x4's down and he loaded them himself while i grabbed some other stuff. The next day. no 3/4 plywood again. Different operator same great attention to detail and he was upset it took 15 minutes from the time of my request till the time we were loading them. I told him what happened and thanked him for doing what he needed to while also doing it 5 times faster. As much as I hate it I will probably continue to go there...I just know that I need to look up Aisle and Bin numbers before I go so I am not lost for an hour trying to figure out where things are.

Back on track..The kids love going in to build things.. They wanted to go in for the Sept. one but we will be out of town. So now they have to wait till Nov. to go build something again.

    Sorry for the rant.

Oh man lots of stuff happened in the last couple weeks. Short version we went on vacation on Labor Day to go ride quads and 20 minutes after we got there the owner of the KOA bought my wife’s quad. So I sold mine 2 days after we got back. Then I got busy ordering almost everything we will need....after all it’s like the truck... do the mods ever end? Anyway the UPS freight truck is due Tuesday with the biggest shipment I have ordered weighing in at almost 1500 pounds. For now some more update pics.
